Joanne I am not sure.... of the two... Joanne was truly bad to the girls. It's an oft-repeated pattern. A bunch of people join to tell us that they know things. Most of these are designed to cast doubt on the accusation but occasionally there is someone to tell us it's all true!!!They’re sure are a lot of, ahem, new members on this thread. So which one is Joanne and which one is Ted?

Full transparency here. This is probably the only thread that I'll post on this forum as I'm not a figure skating fan but a figure skating dad looking for some help.
I'm not well versed in figure skating but my daughter figure skates. I came across the twitter post about the abuses out in BC and went down the rabbit hole trying to figure out how to deal with a pretty big issue in my eyes in my own backyard and found this forum. My wife has told me to stay quiet as she didn't want it to negatively affect our daughter in the club by being the "whistleblower". I don't see how it could affect our daughter but my wife is very adamant about it so I'm trying to find a way to do it anonymously. So I figure people on here can point me in the right direction.
It seems our club hired a coach that was recently accused of inappropriate behaviour with a skater but was never reported to Skatecanada. He was just fired from the other place which is just up two streets from me. There must be a shortage of coaches because for the life of me I can't figure out why a club would hire this guy.
Who should I report this to? Because its not first hand knowledge I don't know how they would take the information. I'm sure there are complaints all the time about stuff so how do they know to take it seriously? I don't think its a rumour either because we have friends at the other club and their daughter skates with the girl that made the complaint and the coach suddenly stopped working there. I just think without an investigation there should be no way anyone should be allowed to work with kids after they have been accused of misconduct with a minor. I have made it clear that my daughter should never be in a lesson with this coach. And this issue is general knowledge amongst many parent at our club but apparently getting ahead in skating is more important? It just baffles me that people think this is ok. And if after an investigation is made he is found in the clear, I have no problems with him continuing to work with kids. But to let him do so seems so irresponsible.
And a really weird twist in this is that it seems this Coach Joanne that you guys are mentioning was the founder of my daughter's club. WTF.

You know what else is an oft-repeated pattern? Posters attacking other posters on the basis that their user title says ‘New Member.’ Except that title simply refers to the number of posts a person has made, not the date they joined, and in this thread, none of the “new” posters prior to skate Dad above are really new at all - they all joined years ago (just click on the user name and you’ll see the date each joined).
Should no one new ever join? Or can they join but just not post? Or can they join but just not post on certain topics?
I can understand questioning or disagreeing with someone’s post based on its content, but focusing on the fact that someone appears to be new comes across as cliquish nativism.

I’ll leave it to others with more knowledge to answer but welcome to FSU. As a parent and grandparent, I’m glad you’re protecting your daughter.
It appears that, rather than being the "Mr. Nice Guy" he pretends to be, Ted Barton has a narcissistic personality. It will be hard to watch the JGP this coming season and listen to him talk. I might have to turn the sound down after the skater finishes his/her program.

After this doping scandal broke in Beijing, he got flamed in Twitter for his praise of Eteri. So, he shut down his Twitter account. I know Twitter can be brutal but that's not a good look

This is exactly why the bad behaviour is unchecked and being the whistleblower comes with some hard retaliation to the athlete. It is completely understandable to be hesitant. Especially when the whole skating system knows, including skate Canada, what has and is going on in BC. at 8 rinks with Ted and Joanne I am not sure who to report to as safe sport is the pretend third party paid for by Skate Canada. They squashed Asher.

Ted sucks as a commentator, one of the worst ones I've heard. Good god he's just as boring as the skating he likes, and I can make a bot that makes more interesting comments than he's ever done.
I agree here. Plenty of people, including high-level skaters, have read the board over the years. They may not want to add anything to conversations until they come across something they are familiar with (especially something like this), but they really are often greeted with "okay [name the skater being defended]" or disregarded because of the lack of posts.
You sure are on a roll claiming people never learned how to read and/or are too stupid to do this or that task. Whatever comes of this story and whatever truths we learn, the reason you're seeing so much skating (to whine about) is because of Ted Barton himself.Ted Barton butchers people names - even the blandest, easiest, whitest names out there because he's too stupid to get them right.

Ted Barton's commentary is a reason why I could see him somewhat 'protected' with regards to all this. Not only his commentary for Canadian-hosted events, but also within the ISU - he's now a well-known international name for commentary, and IMO both ISU and SC (and CBC?) may want to protect that.

I should have mentioned the skating club is in Ontario. A few people sent me resources in BC. Thank you for your efforts but I don't want to waste people's time. So it seems Skate Ontario is the people who I can contact anonymously. But it still baffles me why the original club didn't do anything about it and just washed their hands of it and left him to potential prey on kids at another club.

I'm my opinion, it's time for all coaches to have to do at least a year of full-time education, similar to the training elementary and high school teachers receive, before being allowed to coach. It's crazy to think they have pedagogical skills, including understanding nuanced, ethical issues, just because they have figure skating experience. Very often what they bring to their work instead is their own, un-self-aware dysfunction. In some ways sports coaching is a very benighted and insular profession that's in desperate need of modernization.

Unfortunately, these kinds of situations can be really hard to pursue. It's not easy to have abusive coaches face consequences. Every Skate Canada coach has to pass a criminal record check but passing a criminal record check doesn't mean you're a safe person, it just means you haven't done anything that'll show up on a criminal record check, so people do fall through the cracks. And people generally don't talk about abuse, so coaches get away with it.
I do want to encourage you, my dad stepped into situations that were definitely not okay, even though I wasn't in any particular danger at the time. I strongly believe that his intuition that something was off, and calling out this particular coach when he saw or heard things directly protected me. Though I can't know for sure, I do believe that coach knew that there would be issues if anything happened with me. He left shortly after he was called out in front of people. Might be a coincidence, who knows, but I am grateful that my dad was involved enough to be aware of things going on.
