Beneful and Purina Pro Plan Dog Food Recall

My son bought that food for his dog recently and the dog wouldn't eat it. That dog eats everything. I wonder if he could tell it was bad?

When I first saw the post, I thought that there was some type of contamination in the dog food. But, it was only not enough vitamins and minerals, which is harmless to the dogs. Cats and dogs in the Western countries are spoiled compared to the ones in 2nd/3rd world countries. In the 2nd/3rd world countries, cats and dogs scavenge whatever scrap they can find left by humans. Nobody cares whether they have enough vitamins or not. Yet, they seem to be surviving well. My mom said that when she grew up in Taiwan countryside, kids would take a dump in the street and the dogs would come and eat it. If feel bad for the dogs and cats in 2nd/3rd world countries b/c they have a much harder life than in the 1st world countries.

While ITA with you about dogs having it much better in the developed world, I'll point out that feeding Purina Benefiul is not spoiling your dog. Those are just cheap kibbles - nowhere near the top of the line. Their first listed ingredient is ground corn (a no-no) and there is not actual meat it, just meat meal and fat.

I believe that raw food is best, actually, but it's hugely expensive, so we give our dog a top-tier kibble (Acana).

The ones being recalled are the ones that come in a plastic dish with a foil lid you peel back though. Not the kibble. Which I agree is not all that healthy.

Also, our pets often have a limited diet so not getting enough vitamins and minerals in whatever you feed them is an issue if all you feed them is one particular brand and flavor. We feed our cats 6 different flavors (though all but one of the flavors is made by the same company) just so they get some variety.
