  • Football: 16 women's teams, and 12 men's teams.
  • Boxing will have an equal number of weight categories
  • Water Polo will have two additional women's teams
  • mixed events in archery, athletics (4x100m mixed relay), golf, gymnastics, rowing coastal beach sprint, and table tennis team event
  • Swimming: 50m events will be added for the other 3 strokes (6 additional events)
  • Rowing: solo, and mixed double sculls in beach coastal sprint
  • Sport Climbing: boulder, and lead events will be separated
  • Basketball 3x3: expanded to 12 teams

I saw football at the '84 Olympics. So I was confused because it's not a new sport for the Olympics. :D

What they didn't make clear in the article is that they're adding a mixed event in compound archery, which was not normally in the Olympic programme before (all individual and team events had been in recurve archery only).

I've heard flag football at the Olympics come up a lot among professional football players and they are so onboard. I'm sure they never believed they would have any shot at being Olympians unless they moved to another sport. I do remember a few bobsledders who played professionally.

I think there are a handful who also have done track, but not many, especially in recent years. I think Devon Allen may be the most well-known/successful NFL player to also compete at a high level in track.
