Off to physiotherapy - will miss some of the first group of Pairs FSs.

Yuma could still pull up to get yet another silver (obviously I'd like to see Adam hold on though). There isn't all that much difference in score. Any of the top 6 have a real chance.

I saw a quite from Torgy that he didn't really want to come to Worlds and considered withdrawing  And to place 7th in the short after that, how amazing.

Donovan in 14th - if he hadn't fallen on that quad he could be around 11th! Really hoping he stays in for at least another year.

Another really good men’s short program event. What a treat to see so many wonderful skaters put out clean programs.

So happy to see Stephen Gogolev continue his consistency. Love how Tonia K. said it took him awhile to adjust to the growth and figure out where all the body parts are 😂 I’m happy a Canadian man is up there again!

Torgy was amazing. One of his best overall short programs. Now that he’s made the Olympics maybe he can compete with less nerves. Sorry he didn’t quite make the final group.

Denis Vasileevs is such a delight always. Love his skating. Jason Brown like quality.

Alexander Selevko great, masterful skating and performance. Deserves to be in the top group and in medal contention in my book.

Jacob Sanchez!!! Be still my heart. Gorgeous, solid debut. Love his quality skating so much. Get that quad please!

Kevin Aymoz shaky jumps but delivered. Otherwise fun, audience grabbing performance.

Adam Siao Him Fa incredible skate…just like the Olympics. Second is the correct placement here. I agree with Mark that step sequence should be +5.

Ilia….holy cow!!! Great to see him so relaxed and confident. Masterful skate in all respects with, by far, the hardest jump content delivered with ease. Crowd going nuts for him!

Kagiyama another big mistake. Poor guy is just not skating clean these days, but still held up on the basis of his other great jumping passes and skating skills.

Shun has discovered the key to consistency. His skating is not exciting to me nor particularly standout in style but he delivers.

Hoping we don’t get Friday the 13th free skates like the Olympics…🙏

I understand Ilia's technical score. I don't understand all his PCS scores.

Don't understand or don't agree?

If it's genuinely don't understand, happy to tell you why I think his PCS are mostly deserved using the published criteria. But if you've already heard that and still disagree, I'll save my breath .

His style is not always my cup of tea, but I do think on a good day he deserves 8.5-9.0 skating skills, 9.0-9.5 composition, and 9.5-10 presentation.

If Kagiyama moves up, I hope it's with a good performance. I will be majorly annoyed to see another mistake-ridden performance like the Olympics held up with unreasonably high scores. When nearly every jump has some kind of error or weak landing, it affects the overall performance in a way that should impact all PCS.

Has Junhwan said whether he plans to continue?

I wonder if Seo will move up to Senior next year. If Cha retires, no reason for him not to, unless he wants to win a JW title (and he could try for that either way).

Seo already won JW in 2024. I think he’s moving up.

Miura better keep an eye over his shoulder for Nakata who will move up as well and possibly Tomono, who says he is staying.

Looking at the protocols, I don't understand why any guy (Aymoz, Marsak, Vasiljevs) is choosing to do the jump over in the change camel. The judges are hammering almost all of them with negative GOE for poor quality of the jump over. Seems better points-wise to do a L3 spin and go for positive GOE. Is anyone getting positive GOE for a spin that includes a jump-over?

No, genuinely don't understand, particularly in comparisons to Adam's or Yuma's. What characteristics make Ilia's composition score better than Adam's or Yuma's? Were Ilia's skating skills stronger than Adam's today?

:duh:

I think Nakata, barring a bad season/meltdown at JPN Nats, will be on the World team next season.

Has Yuma said anything about his plans?
I saw a quote from Yuma maybe last week that led me to believe he is undecided about continuing for another cycle.

Nakata is on a good trajectory for the World team next season, but the transition to seniors has been especially rough for most of the Japanese men during this most recent Olympic cycle - look no further than Kao.

I feel like Kao transitioned very well to senior but most recently has seriously regressed for whatever reason. :( I don't expect every junior coming into senior to be medalling at every event.

I wouldn't put Ilia above Adam on skating skills, but I do think they're quite close.

On blade and body control, Adam is often teetering on the brink of disaster; sometimes he's going so fast that he seems to be slightly off balance; his glide can be scratchy at times (wasn't there live so can't comment on today). Ilia typically skates with good power and control, and was especially good today, even if he doesn't have the same flow, control, or ease of movement as Kagiyama. I'd typically have the three as Kagiyama 9.5,- 10 Siao Him Fa 9.0 - 9.5, Malinin 8.5 - 9.0.

On composition, Malinin has strong choreography and connection between the elements (v. three jumps in a row for Adam), very good ice coverage, and presents a "cohesive whole" with a clear point of view as well as any other skater. No issues with 9.0 - 9.5 marks here, similar to Siao Him Fa. I'd have Kagiyama's short program (not his free) a bit higher here, as it's almost an ice dance program with jumps in it.

You didn't ask about presentation, but there's commitment to the choreography, high energy, expression, use of various modern hip-hop style movements (including slides, backflips, etc.), connection to the music. I can go up to 10 here on a good day.

Presentation is the one category where I have no quibble about Ilia's PCS marks. Not a great fan of his choices, but he delivers them outstandingly well.

The problem is that his FS doesn't work for him and he rarely, if ever, skates it clean in competition.

His style is not always my cup of tea, but I do think on a good day he deserves 8.5-9.0 skating skills, 9.0-9.5 composition, and 9.5-10 presentation.
I agree with this. Though I enjoy his style. It's one of my many different types of cups of tea. :)

I'm really happy for Ilia - his jumps are just so effortless. But his spins and footwork need work.
Ilia got +5 from all the judges (the +4 was dropped) for his footwork so not sure where you want that work done. He can't get more than that. I will agree his spins have floundered a bit this season but he can be a great spinner, actually probably the best of the top men on spins.

If Kagiyama moves up, I hope it's with a good performance. I will be majorly annoyed to see another mistake-ridden performance like the Olympics held up with unreasonably high scores.
I adore Yuma's skating with every fiber of my being, but I generally agree with this. I really want medal-winning performances.
