2026 Olys Womens SP PBP - Cheated Rivalry

Eh. I think Ami, Kaori, Mone, and Alysa are more likely to have Solid Skates than either the skate of a lifetime than a complete meltdown. I honestly think Petrosian is more likely to move down rather than up. But we'll see 🤷‍♀️

I do wonder if anyone at the ISU has ever thought to do a study to see how many skating fans they lose versus how many they keep with their inconsistencies in judging. I'm sure there are FSUers--probably the ones who lurk rather than the ones typing I'M DONE but still--who will genuinely not watch skating again if Petrosian wins. I'd like to know: 1. how much of a bounce skating gets after the Olympics 2. how many of those Oly fans turn into actual skating fans. which to me would be watching Nationals, Worlds, and at least one other competition so a low baseline here, versus 3. how many long term fans are lost after each cycle.

While some of y'all bringing up the numbers and judging and blah-blah are f-ing annoying, y'all are also the absolute backbone of the sport--those who pay $$$ to go to multiple events, hype up events, talk about it beyond FSU. My perception is that viewership has gone down and it is inexplicable to me why Eteri skaters are so valued as it's bad for the long-term growth of the sport, it's just not good skating, and it's not good judging.

There's no upside to the promotion of skaters like Petrosian and Gumennik. Especially as most of the "outrage" over his scoring is Russian bots botting. I checked out a lot of the profiles of those saying he wuz-robbed on ISU, The Skating Lesson, etc and the vast majority were obviously not real profiles. This is manufactured rage and those who were real people CLEARLY understood less about COP than I do and did not regularly follow skating. They couldn't even spell SATO. Even I can manage Sato.

I'll still watch skating BUT, and this is a big BUT, I stopped fitting my life around skating along time ago. If I miss a Grand Prix, oh well. If I only see one event at Euros, that's how it goes. If I totally miss 4CC, well, I needed the sleep. Hell, I didn't even know who the Canadian entry for men was until the Team Event. Eight years ago, I'd have been snarling and complaining and angry and overjoyed and ecstatic about...something. Now, it's just a fun thing I watch. Like, once upon a time, I'd have lost sleep over Ilia's skate in sympathy AND M/K's in excitement, replaying both in my head for different reasons. Now, I just close the computer and honestly, I'm done. I guess it's more healthy but it's also sad that something that used to bring me a lot of joy and was an emotional outlet is now...not.
That's just age though. Age and other priorities. You need space and stretch in your life to fit it around anything that has only emotional value. Adulting comes and swallows you whole until there is no energy let for anything that's YOURS ALONE except perhaps a five-minute spelling bee game before bedtime.

And I don't think you can design a statistically meaningful study that pins a decline or a rise of interest in skating to any one particular reason, let alone judging.

Just watched it all, and the results are a bit scattershot for me. The top four I don't have issues with. Samodelkina and Haein Lee were my other skaters in the top six.

Gubanova was better for me than Petrosian too. Don't get 8s for Petrosian as she's a bit stiff in the knees and the presentation is pure Dani G automaton, like most of his and Eteri's pupils. Zero emotion in all that posing.

Frustrated for both Isabeau (seemed very nervous) and Amber... especially after that glorious 3A. Hopefully they can relax more in the free. After all we've seen lots at the top melt down these past 10 days. Still opportunity to move up!

Also cheers to team Belgium. Glad to see them looking healthy and happy on the ice.

Sad for Gutmann, but at least she has the team bronze.

Schild should be sending Schizas a care package of the finest French wines, cheeses and chocolates for the gift of letting her into the FS. :P

I had forgotten how much random air kicking there is in their programs. what is that for exactly? it reminds me of sally O'Malley on SNL. "I like to kick..."

It's been standard since Lipnitskaya's "Schindler's List" program, where I wondered the same thing online here. Every transition into an element she hoisted her leg, like a male dog with a bladder infection. But people here (and the judges) loved it. 🤷‍♂️

Not much rhyme or reason to these rotation calls. It seems they wanted to placate people by mostly sticking to q's which isn't fair for some skaters who were right on the edge and got q's when some others' jumps were < or maybe even << and got q's as well.

My top 6 would have been (1) Ami (2) Alysa (3) Kaori (4) Isabeau (5) Mone (6) Samodelkina

Ami - brilliant. skating with so much technical prowess and big, joyful presentation.

Sakamoto - a little tight with the jumps but just a powerhouse skater with such a big presence.

Liu - again, not really fair q on the loop given that it was a lot closer to some other jumps that also got qs.

Chiba - she was delightful, probably most charismatic I've seen her with this program.

Petrosian - the jumps looked tight (where were HER q's??!!) but it's a great program that hits all the musical highlights. Watched this with a bunch of non skating people and they were really into it.

Gubanova - again, no q's on that axel and lutz?! Eeenteresting.

Hendrickx - lovely polished skate. Only getting a q on the 2nd jump of the combo was generous.

Levito - robbed! She should def be in the final group.

Sofia - also robbed. Her PCS seem low - esp her SK. And her level drops on really nice non-jump elements just remind me how much I hate leveled elements.

Amber - gutted!!! hope she can come back strong in the free.

I am saturated with the Olympics. It's always way too much drama. And usually fairly unpredictable. But yet, NBC will forever hype skaters to no end and when they fail, I think they enjoy the bad drama as much as the good. I felt like the hype with Amber was misplaced given her track record and yet NBC persisted. Personally, I loved the sweet skater currently in 1st. She just went out and did it. I have no hopes for the FS...it is the Olympics after all.

I couldn't even comment on the pairs FS. It was too much for me. Like folks say, "I'm too old for this".
Yes! NBC Primetime figure skating coverage leaves a lot to be desired this time. The over the top drama they try to create with the U.S. skaters is, well, way over the top. I didn’t understand the huge focus on Amber in the short as some others have stated. She has never medaled at Worlds. Didn’t medal at the Grand Prix final this year. And is known to be a nervy skater. She IS an amazing skater…wonderful and so admirable. But Alysa is World Champion and Grand Prix Final Champion this season. And they ignored Isabeau, despite being a world silver medalist. Then the extreme close ups at the beginning of programs and in the K&C are horrible. I want to see the opening poses. I want to see the skaters interact with their coaches in the K&C. I feel like NBC is trying to emotionally manipulate the viewers way too much. Just report the result without trying to amp up the drama all the time. The cameras in Amber’s face were ridiculous as she was crying. Leave her alone! Are people here mostly watching the venue feed? Maybe I need to. And skip Primetime.

That won't make the FS, but Kurakova does?
And Schild, don't forget Schild.

Ironic that a much younger inexperienced Maddie skated so much better 4 years ago in Beijing.

Youth is always served at the Olympics. Older athletes know too much about what can go wrong.
The “q” is what kills me. If the judges are going to be that darn picky if the skaters are short on rotation (cough*for some skaters*cough), they should take a darn protractor out on the ice to get an accurate measurement.
Like in curling!!

Yes, the Venue Feed is blissful - truly a dream come true for the many who have complained about commentators over the years. During the live event at least, they show the full introductions, warm-ups, replays, and medal ceremonies with limited commercials. I watch it side by side with the live scoring website because they don't show the standings often so it can be a little hard to follow who has placed where. Otherwise, it's excellent.

I DVR the afternoon USA / NBC broadcasts and watch those if there is something I want to hear commentary on. And save most of these so I can watch again some time in the future.

I did watch Dance on USA / NBC because I find that tough to follow with no commentary and I actually liked Terry, Johnny, and Tracy - I wished they used that combo for Pairs (or, really all of it).

I have not watched NBC PrimeTime at all aside from Men's Free because I was curious to see how they handled that.

I really hope we have Venue Feed again in the future!

It’s kinda nice that there were so many good skates outside the top group that we all have our wuzrobbed’s. Mine are Samodelkina and both Belgians, I think Pinzarrone might have won the night on musical expression.

And, of course, Isabeau, who is really getting hammered for being US#3. I hope she realizes that, assuming Amber retires and given her young age, she has a quad or two left to star. I’m sure not seeing any US Junior girls of her quality.

I wish I understood why I just don't find Isabeau's skating compelling because all of the individual aspects are actually pretty fabulous.

I have a soft spot for when we get a qualifier from someone who probably thinks they haven't made it - happy for Lorine Schild! (Sorry Schizas)

Overall a great ladies SP!

Couldn`t bear to watch this last night. Good night sleep. Going through it now.

Isabeau - why does she not get in the 9`s for composition and presentation? She brings these idiomatic programs. The skating relates to the music. A little tight last night but sincerely communicates with her audience throughout. I`d much rather watch her than other great skaters skating to incipit pop balades. Or, other great skaters who give you 30 seconds to expression after they do all the rest. (BTW her combo looked the best it has all season). Don`t understand the judging here.

Can`t find the place in the thread. Why is Nikai in 1st? She has the youthful 3A; I`ll give her that. But the skating is still young. Nice music and costume. But where is he expression? A smile stuck on her face the whole time; has she even seen La Strada? Judges picking shiny new penny over skaters who have matured and skate with nuance. I`m glad I didn`t watch last night.

Isabeau wuzrobbed in my book. There was a time when judging panels really appreciated her brand of beautiful skating at the Olympics. But not so much anymore I guess. But I can’t tell you how many of my non-skating friends bring her up as the one they enjoy the most because of the beauty in her skating.
I was messaging with a 4-year fan friend who has a strong arts background during the final group. She was most impressed with Alysa ("A beautiful skater, born for this... she has something you just can't train") and less so with Isabeau ("Cute but not super exciting"). She also hated Amber's makeup  and wondered why skaters aren't allowed to throw in an element later in the program if they mess one up (like gymnasts do).

I was really looking forward to watching this and was oh so smug that we got the baby millys to sleep. We even had a bottle of cheap prosecco open.
However 2 hours at soft play took its toll and I fell asleep half way through Schizas and the Lion King. Shame!
OTOH, you have cute baby millys, so that's a win!

Wait, so if Petrosian is 5th, does it mean she will win the whole thing?
I already told someone not to manifest this. The skating gods are always listening!

I loathed Amber’s makeup, that heavy purple lipstick was so unflattering. The whole look was too much.

We happen to be in Monaco today surrounded by chic thin Monaco ladies and I already feel like we Americans have no style….which may play into it.

A musical theatre friend of mine, who watches every four years and when I send her especially great skates, texted me to say that Alyssa’s short was one of the most artistic skates she’d ever seen.

Not an Alysa fan, but I agree. Which makes the recycled Donna Summer free skate all the more disappointing. It's a shame she never figured out Gaga.

I'd have had Alysa first in the short, and I'm incensed she's behind Sakamoto.
