2025 ISU GPF Ice Dance Free Dance - Have No Fear Shawn’s Not Here

I feel like both of F/G's programs seem more like exhibitions.
I blame IAM. They are instrumental in dance creations for their teams. Look at each teams programs over the years. Good coaches may say "ok you want to do that". Excellent coaches would guide teams to a better choice of music/movements.

JMO - since I'm not a coach. But someone is paying $$$$$$ to them, I would expect them to develop less exhibition programs and better competition performances.

I never warmed to FB/C's free until this competition. I had fallen under the spell until, OOPS, the fall broke the spell. But it was beautiful, or maybe I was just in the mood for it today...
I thought it was beautiful. It compliments their skating skills. Shame about the fall.

I'm no in teknik when it comes to ID but, to my untrained eye, in the RD FB/C appeared to do an awful lot of standing still and posing, and skating on two feet versus the rest of the field. 🤷🏼 They do show great speed and deep edges..when they're actually skating. Their FD can be mesmerizing but again it seems posey to me. I LOVE F/G's FD. I'm not upset with the final standings but it's going to be very interesting at the Olympics. I'll only add that those overly long skirts are a hazard in ID (Laurence's skirt even drew blood!), I wish that C/B would go back to their Snake FD (your skirt is STILL too long Maddie!) and I think that Z/K should have placed much higher!

Watched the FD replay, what a joy it was and I mean that. I loved every team (even C/B who I think have LONG overstayed). I will say that no dress should ever cause a fall, if it does, shorten it! Funny to think that back when skating became popular (and skated on outside rinks), all the women wore long skirts. But they didn't do the stuff skaters do now, lol

I will say it one more time...audiences want to clap and give standing Os, they want to gasp when a cool move happens. They don't want to be bored, they paid a lot of money for those tickets. So we NEED teams like F/G for example to bring us to our feet and smile till our faces break. And we need young teams like Z/K to give us hope for ice dance to improve and endure. And teams like R/A for their innovation and that feeling of "wow, that was cool". And then there are teams with beautiful lines and DEEP edges that grind into the ice and their bodies look like fluid flowing over the ice (F-B/G). All that is why I watch ice dance so happily. I am not a judge nor a tech controller, I don't always see the technical mistakes unless they are obvious. I am a fan, I love the sport and appreciate the hard work the skaters put in, but I also love the beauty and aesthetics of every discipline.

That's my Olympic year post, when the world will be watching and we actually come together to celebrate our athletes.

I remember when it was common for ice dance women to wear a longer skirt than singles skaters or pairs. But not THAT long. Since both these costumes are coming out of the same training center, I speculate that someone there has a thing for these skirts. :D At least with Madi's, she is using it as a cape and it is part of the dance and movement. It's still too long. But it also has a point. I don't see the point with the other long skirts. The program would work just as well without them.

And speaking of costumes that bug... why are F-B/Ciz wearing costumes that remind us of the ocean? They do realize that the movie The Whale is not literally about whales, right?

I suspect that Madi and Evan trained A LOT to handle that skirt/cape so it wouldn't be a hazard, but that FBCiz didn't think it necessary train specifically for a skirt hazard since skirts that long have become pretty common and it's probably (certainly ?) never been a problem before in all their run-throughs.

Do you honestly expect them to have a program about morbid obesity, guilt, and remorse? :slinkaway
I expected them to pick different music that is more evocative of water than what they picked.

Though a program about guilt, remorse and reconnecting might be interesting.

A movie soundtrack (and for that matter, any piece of music that goes with a story) doesn't have to be interpreted literally; it can stand on its own.
This soundtrack does not invoke "the movement of water" or anything about water to me at all. Maybe this is why I find their program boring and pretensious.

Laurence had skirt issues with Nik (including a fall iirc) one season as well so she must be used to it being a possibility by now.

During the broadcast iirc one of the commentators mentioned that C&B took a spill during a practice due to her skirt. Not to mention that this particular team has a history of taking falls during competitions. Even at the Olympics. :slinkaway

Why tempt fate with a much too long skirt that they've already fallen on in practice? 🤷🏼‍♀️

eta I got completely confused as to who you were talking about

I thought I was going to be able to watch a lot of the GPF live cause I was chaperoning a two-night Model UN field trip, and there's no sleeping anyway. But no. There was a Major Ordeal (not my school, but it affected my hotel-room floor) and the wifi couldn't keep up with almost 500 teenagers plus the regular guests. So now I'm finally catching up and being forced to watch with muggles.

My mom preferred R/A to Z/K. I think I'm going to have to disown her. She didn't get that from me; it's like she was raised in a livebarn. She is, btw, first generation boomer, and she's up in here, traitor to her generation and the wisdom I have passed down to her of the ice dance greats. She called P/G "boring" and that this song and concept was a snooze.. AND THEN. While I can the dislike FB/C because I know the lore of this partnership, but I feel like we all have eyes, and I would hope if I just happened upon this cold, I'd recognize that they are the best dancers. We did agree that the Brits were entertaining.

My issue with the judging is really their are two conflicting ideas. I feel like there are two podiums that make sense: one with the Brits, the Latvians, and ChoBats for delivering a clear concept the audience can easily relate. There's value in that. Skating skills would and should be low, but the others parts that make up PCS should be high. Then I think there's a podium that's FB/C, G/P, and Z/K (or K at least) that's the best skating. But this weird mishmash of the two--it's confusing to know exactly what the judges want and what sort of program to perform.

I think we have been spoiled with such excellent ice dance teams since 2010 (V/M, D/W, P/C) that the judges, fans, and technical committee feel the vacuum and have floundered in this quad to define, communicate, and defend what good ice dance is anymore.

I prefer R/A to Z/K. R/A's programs this year for me more creative and interesting. Plus love their music choices. And their RD brings on the cheese (which whilst not an official component should be).

It does for me which is why I think I love it so much. I live on an island nation and the ocean is such a powerful force here both in nature and livelihood. Both the music and movement in their FD evokes the same feelings for me as when I sit in solitude on the rocks watching the rhythm of the ocean when it is calm and when it is raging. Their rotational lift to that pulse in the music reminds me of sitting by myself on the deck of the ship in calm waters watching whales move by us. For me the ocean is both peaceful and terrifying which stirs up a mix of emotions in me at the same time as it has provided both life and death to my personal circle.

But I am not trying to convince anyone and nor could I. Just wanted to share how that FD can hit with some people that has nothing to do with pretentiousness or what one thinks ice dance should be. I think it's just a brilliant score and I think they do a great job with it.

But there are so many genres of art and we all like what we like. Or sometimes we may not really be into a particular genre until one day they produce a piece that just takes us back to a moment in life that really resonates. And that's what they do with this piece for me but my life is different to others so I don't expect them to have my experiences or react the same way I do.

Speaking of things I like :) I love the Starry Night painting, always have. I so wanted Piper and Paul to tap into what I feel when I see that painting. They do in part but I crave more intensity. But I see for others it gives them exactly what they want.

Same for Z/K. So many raving about that FD but I am still waiting for a team to skate to that same music and not make me feel the same way ( or better ) than Annisina and Peizerat did. And for me they don't come close so I´m a bit "meh its fine".

btw... I just attached myself to your post to share my thoughts about the FD. Not to debate or deny your reaction or opinion :)
