That being said, he absolutely deserves 4th place.

How would we differentiate it from a normal episode?

It's going to be interesting to see how camp Malinin decide what to do about the Os. Winning over and over makes an athlete lose their edge. Putting a 4A combo in the SP is a way to rack up a huge amount of points that make it difficult for any other skater catching up in the FS. OTOH, if it doesn't work, then that changes your FS comfort zone. If you get nerves, you lose. If you double down and get mad, you win. It's good for them for this to happen here and now. Will he give in to pressure or come out and own the ice? For all the talk about Plushenko, he was that type of competitor. What will Ilia do?

I assume at the Olys, Ilia will go back to his previous SP layout. They would be crazy to try today's layout again at the biggest comp of his career. We might see today's layout at Worlds.

Just catching up, Yuma was amazing I think my favourite skate of the season. Ilia not looking great, even though he is amazing he needs to return to his previous short program (take out the quad axel). Adam deserved his scores but I really hope he can get some consistency he is such an amazing skater. Grassl did as well as he can and other than his weird technique on his jumps I can see the dancer in him - and would love to see a video of his contemporary dancing (his schooling). Silly me just assumed Ilia would win everything, I watched him live at the GP final last year and he was amazing and same at Skate Canada - so this really opens things up.

Ilia's FS at SC (w/o 4A) scored 228, Yuma's season's best is 190, career best is 208 (Beijing Olys). Ilia can definitely pull ahead but can't afford any errors.

This will probably do Ilia good. All that "he's untouchable no matter what" talk can't be good for a skater in Olympic season.

I think giving the 4A some tries prior to Olys is good. Would be nice to know you can do them under pressure - though, today not so.

A quad Axel can, because the Axel requirement itself has to be a triple or double.

If he was clearly attempting a 4a as his solo jump, but got hit with <<, and did a 3a for his axel requirement, would his 4a<< be seen as an illegally repeated jump?

I am assuming you still can't repeat a jump unless doing it in combination with the repeated version, like 3t3t

Well, that fall on the 4z was rather weird and unexpected.

I am overdosed on “going back to last year’s program.”

If there is funding, I’d rather just go to a brand new program.

Cant believe how many skaters across all disciplines are rehashing stuff. I could be an amateur skater for 40 years…. retire, and then reminisce about how many songs and music choices I wish I could’ve still skated to.

I think his new short program this year was great. It was different, and it stood out. Obviously going back to last year‘s Dune warhorse did him no favors as this was the worst he’s done.
