2025 Canadians Men FP - Last Man Standing?

Sadovsky didn't even need to try the 2nd 4s to win, but gutsy to go for it. Congrats to him on his second national title, five years after his first.

And that was a program worthy enough to maybe not make him skate it off for the World's slot.

Good for Roman. One fall ... but he didn't come apart after that. I'm so happy for him. Battling the nerves for him is as difficult as any quad jump could be. I knew he'd be Cdn. champ (after all the withdrawals) but I wanted him to skate a program he could be proud of ... and he did just that. Well done.

Roman needs to do whatever Maxime has done to 'turn' his brain off when needed. And then tell me how to do that please!

Hard to say. It all depends, I think, on how Wesley & Aleksa really are doing. But, it seems pretty clear those three will be named to the 4CCs team and I guess we'll just have to wait and see about Worlds.

Come on Ted, Tracey has not been his coach for most, if not all his career. He went through a lot of coaches IIRC.

Actually as train-wrecky as our men are right now... The top 3 weren't half bad! There's a lot of potential in some of these men, there were of course some disasters here today, but overall, I'm not disappointed in the top 3. They did their job. So glad for Roman to come through with that performance. Quad, triple axel, good solid skate. He did so well here. Hopefully something to build on.

Wesley is just almost as inconsistent as Roman and not nearly as artistic. But between those two I know I'd prefer to see Roman in Boston. JMO.
Watching either of them is like watching paint dry. JMO, lol.

Hmmm. 240 minus the at home bonus puts Romsky around 216 at Worlds which is exactly (well as close to exactly as one can get) what he scored last time to finish 19th. That boy’s gotta figure out how to nail the 2nd 4S.

So, who are we suggesting tries pairs?
There were only like 5 guys left in this competition after all the withdrawals, we can't afford to lose any more!

But from junior women, I would like to see Laurence Gignac give pairs a try. She had a lovely presence on the ice, and her "easier" triples looked really strong.

Watching last night I was wondering to myself if this era in Canadian men was worse, better or about the same as the 1995-1998 of Canadian women.

Feels similar to me, unfortunately.

Vast majority of the field lagging behind the minimum standard of world competition? Yup.

Consistency no where to be seen? Yup.

Talent pool coming up looking pretty light? Yup.

I don’t know what the answer is on this or how it gets turned around, but I feel kind of sad on the state of men’s skating right now.

The if is always Roman, who has the talent to be a top 10 skater in the world, but he hasn’t been at that point for several years now. This was a step forward, but no where near what he would need to active that kind of result in Boston.

Anthony is very exciting to watch, but I just don’t see the big jumps coming. The jumps he is landing are fairly small and squeaked out as is. The unfortunate reality is that without a quad, the doors won’t really be opening for him. I know he’s young and will happily be wrong about this, but I suspect the technical side will always be an issue.

And after that…well, there were some small moments of potential, but on the whole, to tie it back to my first comment, it all felt very 1998 Canadian women. I know there were a couple withdrawals here, but still.

So then my question is, what is SC doing about this? I don’t feel it’s an exaggeration to think we might not qualify a man to the Olympics. That’s not outside the realm of reality. I hope there are some real conversations happening about how we fix this. They did take a serious, hard look at how women were being trained in Canada in the late 90s and I do believe we started to see the rewards of that in the Rochette/Phaneuf era. I feel a similar grass roots change needs to be made with the men now. For a country with such a rich, long history of men’s skating, it’s kinda hard to watch right now.

I looked up the men’s 2019 results. That year there were several young men including Roman who looked like they could potentially carry the Canadian men’s torch but things didn’t work out for Gogolev, Pham, Nguyen, Nadeau, Orzel. I’m guessing Skate Canada wasn’t expecting growth spurts and life would get in the way again of that many contenders. The women’s event benefited from having Top Ten Jen while the new generation was developing. Is there a male equivalent in Canada right now?

Anybody know what the numbers are like in CanSkate? Other than those born into a figure skating family, how are kids, boys in particular, finding their way to coaches? My grandsons are into hockey and, at least here, it is booming. At the younger ages there are a lot of girls as well - probably not half but a lot. Hockey dominates winter sport on television and even our national figure skating championship was not shown on any network. I am frankly amazed at how into hockey our 7 year old is - grew his hair longer to look like a hockey player, collects cards, has a favourite team, and parents are constantly driving him to practices, games, tryouts, etc. It all seems more than when my kids were young - is this Canada wide?

I thought soccer was overtaking hockey in most parts of Canada? But it used to be that the guys who were too small for hockey went into figure skating.
