2025 Canadian Jr. & Sr. Sectionals/Challenge

Medland-Spence fell on her opening triple lutz but landed a lot of other triples including a triple toe triple toe late in the program. I was not expecting that. Popped her final triple loop into a single.

Really nice moments there for Katherine. When she lands the jumps they have a beautiful swish to them.

Really hit and miss for Madeline today. Gonna to get a +combo on the second loop too, but good planning to add the 2A and 2T onto the second 2A.

Struggles still with the free skate for her though. She’s looking pretty ragged at the end as well. But tough to compete in this little lull between grand prix’s for her, but I think good that she did.

14.5. Byed Skaters Electing to Compete
In the event that a competitor is Byed through a Sectionals competition, Skate Canada Challenge, or Regionals but elects to compete, the Bye will be retained by the competitor regardless of the result achieved by such competitor. In this case, the numbers of competitors advancing to the next level of competition will be determined as if the competitor activated their Bye.

Does this mean the end of Gabrielle Daleman’s season with no sectionals?
Possibly unless she was given an injury bye. I guess we'll see when the entry lists for Challenge come out.
Daleman is not listed.

@Sylvia I'm wondering why you think Lulu Lin has a bye? I didn't think two JGPs got a skater a bye - only making the JGP final gets a bye to nationals. JGP assignments get a bye through sectionals.

???: Audréanne Foster S7 at 2024 Nationals, Rose Théroux S9, Mély-Ann Gagner J3 (NextGen), Michelle Lee J8 (NextGen), Ksenia Krouzkevitch N3 (NextGen), Rui Qi [N3 man not in NextGen]
Foster hasn't skated this year. Théroux was registered for Quebec sectionals and did not compete. Gagner competed at Quebec sectionals and didn't qualify. I don't know about the others.

I went back and edited my post to add "??? just guessing here" - perhaps this applies?
14.7. Extraordinary Circumstances and Medical Byes
Extraordinary circumstance Byes to Skate Canada Challenge, Skate Canada Trophy, or the Canadian Figure Skating Championships at any level may be granted by the High Performance Development Committee in consultation with the Skate Canada President, Skate Canada CEO, Director(s) of High Performance and NextGen, as appropriate. Such Byes will only be granted in extraordinary circumstances where the skater has demonstrated worthiness for a Bye. Such a Bye is extraordinary and will generally be related to medical conditions. In this case, such Byed competitor(s) will be in addition to the designated maximum number of competitors in the relevant Canadian Figure Skating Championships Event. Requests for consideration for a Bye must be made in writing to the Skate Canada CEO and must contain a description of the grounds upon which such Bye is being requested.

Laurie Nealin article in today's Winnipeg Free Press focusing on Manitoba skaters Kemp/Elizarov, Davey Howes, and Breken Brezden: Manitoba figure skaters come home for Skate Canada Challenge

Kemp and Elizarov’s goal this week is to re-familiarize themselves with the feeling of competing and garner feedback from the judging panel in the build-up to Canadians and, potentially, the world junior championships in Hungary in February. (Kemp and Elizarov have already competed twice at worlds, finishing sixth both times.)

“They really love competing. They like to perform and they’re excited to perform back in their home town,” Dawe said, as he headed to a training session last Friday.

“We’re not far off from where we were before we had the break. At Challenge, we’re not doing all of our hardest content even though we’re (training) it all. We’re being smart and making sure we don’t have any more interruptions to the season.”

Earlier this season, Canada’s 2023 novice titleholder had been riding a roller-coaster with inconsistent competitive performances. Skating as a guest at the B.C. sectional championship a few weeks ago, however, Howes delivered two solid programs and tallied the highest score.

“Both programs this season are more demanding — both technically and choreographically — in skating skills and interpretation,” explained Howes’ coach Keegan Murphy.

Brezden, whose training and competition readiness were stymied by hip and ankle injuries last season, enjoyed a successful domestic competition run this summer. After clinching two gold medals, she earned her first Team Canada international competition assignment.

Despite a messy short program in Nice, France, in October, Brezden shone in the finale, earning fifth-best scores on the day and 10th place overall.

“She’s improving, gaining her confidence. Most important for her is to stay healthy and continue the evolution, the track she’s on,” Bourgeois noted.

The only senior field that will have maximum entries at nationals is women's. Everyone will qualify out men, pairs and dance. I remember years ago when Challenge was held in Mississauga for a few years, the fields were way bigger. I know they have a minimum TES to get to Challenge, I don't know how much of a factor that is.

Anyway 13 women will qualify (not counting Hetty Shi) and the top ranked skater (not counting Shi) will get to skate in the final warmup group at nationals with Medland-Spence, Dupuis, Shi, Schizas and Ruiter.

This is one of my favourite competitions of the year and I'm really looking forward to it.

Junior pairs is on. I had trouble with the dailymotion link (it kept playing the same few seconds in a loop) but the link embedded on Skate Canada's website is working

ETA same thing happening now on the other stream. I hope it sorts out.

Is it glitchy for anyone else? It seems to be playing on desktop but not when casting from my phone.

I like this SP for Kemp/Elizarov. They had a couple of mistakes - Ava put her free foot down very quickly after landing the 3tw, and fell on the sbs 2a, but the choreo was much more nuanced and intricate than they've had in past programs, and I thought they did a good job with it.

@danafan the stream is working for me, but I'm watching directly on my laptop, not trying to cast to the tv or anything.

Weird to only have one senior pair team competing.

Airplay to my TV is working. For some reason the TV cast app was causing glitches.

Reese Rose landed her 3t3t, but then popped her flip to a double. She'll probably still be in a pretty decent position after the SP though, based on the overall strength of her skating.

(I'm only going to be watching with half an eye, so you'll all have to let me know if I miss any standout performances!)

Reese Rose doubled the flip but the rest was good. She has this fake out moment near the end of the program where you think it's her final pose but the music continues and she keeps going. It gets me every time LOL
