2025–26 Canadian Women: News and Updates

Is it just me, or have Schizas' basics regressed somewhat? I don't ever remember her posture being quite this bad.

I also don't think this long program was worth keeping and the packaging is not great -- she looks very juvenile.

I think it's unfortunate she hasn't been able to capitalize on her obvious potential this quadrennial.

Let's not get all doom and gloomy here. It's not like we have a 1995 era Canadian women's situation. Schizas has another GP event to redeem herself. Medland Spence could have a good outing next week. Dupuis and Ruiter have had some good early season outings and there are several not yet age eligible women with great potential for the future. Fingers crossed that we'll see some great skates at Nationals.
Oh I'm definitely excited for the future, what I've read about the juniors is very promising and we haven't even had the chance to see what Minsol Kwon can do (please God do not let her train with Joanne McLeod). Just in the context of this season, I do genuinely think pretty much any of the women we can send will make the FS at Olympics and Worlds so I do think sending any of the women would be fine. It's just frustrating I think because we know Maddie Schizas has a lot of potential but instead of rising to it she's been kind of regressing over the last year or so. Like yes Worlds was her best finish yet but what she had been doing before that hadn't been dazzling and she was behind Dupuis at 4CCs.

It's crazy to think Canada had two women on the World Podium in 2017, and that was against a full international field (including Team USA, Team JPN, Team KOR and Team RUS.)

Weird that Schizas went back to last years LP dress. I actually really liked the green one she was wearing for the Challengers. I agree the pink one is juvenile looking (along with swallowing her up with appliqués).

But this seems to be the least of the problems right now. She needs to really think long and hard about what has been going wrong this season, because apart from a couple of good SPs in summer events, she’s been having meltdowns left and right. Panic move to Ravi is kind of where my mind goes, but doubt she will do that.

I also read the Rob Brodie piece from Saturday and she said the Black Swan music still hasn’t cleared. So should she make it to the Olympics, that program cannot be what she skates. She seems to be debating on whether she does it again in Finland and changes after that or tries to change to something else in the next few weeks. The music clearance seems to be a real pain for everyone.

Yesterday, Gabrielle Daleman slated a Short Program that landed her in first place at IceChallenge with Kaiya Ruiter in 2nd.

Today, both performed well enough to remain respectively 1st and 2nd.

Particularly impressed with Daleman who despite falling on her 3Lutz out of the gate, kept her cool and delivered a technical score of 59.01 (second to Olga Mikutina) to win it all.

Although Kaiya seems to be doing well under Order/Preston, she still looks junior to me.

The Canadian Championship will be interesting.

Who is Gabrielle Daleman's coach?

Looks like Daleman is coming back strong?! I hope so. It is disappointing to a bit of a back slide for MS. IMHO, she has a very beautiful presence on the ice but that doesn't mean much if the skating performance is weak. Maybe university and skating are too much at once during a pre Oly year.

A bit sad that one of the leading women to get the 1 Olympic spot is Gabby no offense but it says a lot about Canadian women's development over the last 2 Olympic cycles that no one really but Maddie has rose to the top but no one else has challenged her despite her being vulnerable.

Kaiya Reuter has challenged Maddie at the 2024 and 2023 Nationals.
Kaiya won 2024 Nationals. But she also couldn't go to Worlds because she didn't get the minimums. I really hope that Orser and Wilson are working on her basics because she's a great competitor but also has a lot of technical issues. I do expect that with 7 women now having the worlds minimum score, we'll see a stronger competition at 2026 Nationals. And the women's event at 2025 Nationals was actually pretty good.

Kaiya Reuter has challenged Maddie at the 2024 and 2023 Nationals.
But in both cases Maddie knew that Kaiya was ineligible to go to Worlds and Kaiya hasn't really had the results elsewhere other then at Canadian Nats to be considered a constant challenger to Maddie. Just the fact that in 2024 Maddie was going to Worlds regardless if she won at Nationals since no one else had the minimums including Kaiya who ended up winning says as much.

Do we think Gabby has a chance to make the Olympics team if she wins Nationals? I get the impression she's not in favor with Skate Canada based on Shireyeva getting the host spot at SCI.

Daleman's performances at Ice Challenge were a better effort than anything we've seen from any other Canadian woman this season.

Shiryaeva was the correct choice based on the summer scores, where Uliana was clearly scoring ahead of the others. I don't think it speaks to Gabby being "not in favor" but more just scoring unimpressively at that point in the season. If Gabby gets another international and scores equally well or better, and Maddie continues to middle, I think Gabby should get the nod if she wins Nationals, but I don't know how the criteria is written. If everyone continues to score in the 170s or so, I think whoever wins Nationals should probably go...
