2022 Olympic Qualifying Changes?

For men, it's more complicated. Each of US, Russia, Canada, France, and South Korea will send one man to Nebelhorn to get the additional spot, which adds up to 5 tickets.

It really sucks if your a country that already had 3 spots and your two top skaters finished less then 13 and you still have to skate for the 3 spot. Is this only for the Olympics?

No, seven places will be up for grabs and an american, french, canadian, russian and korean will be allowed to fight for one of those places. 7 tickets available

Yes only for this Olympics

If all 3 skaters passed the free cut, then 3 tickets are all earned and no one has to go to Nebelhorn to earn the third spot.

This rule only applies to the Olympics, since the number of athletes are strickly controlled.

Yes, it's only for the Olympics because of the limited spots available to begin with.

And, it is much fairer to all of the countries that have skaters who DID make the FS. This ensures that there isn't any riding the coattails of far stronger skaters to an Olympic spot.

Mens Olympic spots (23 awarded):

3 = Japan
2 = USA*, Russia*, Italy
1 = Canada*, France*, Korea*, China, Georgia, Switzerland, Estonia, Belarus, Latvia, Czech Republic, Mexico, Ukraine, Sweden, Israel

Update: Gregorio Nunez, coach of Donovan Carrillo; contacted me and is confused too, agrees that yes, Mr. Wong is also not helping with confusing things and that he (Gregorio) and Donovan are not certain about the olympic spot and if or not he is already qualified; I explained him the process and how the ISU made it very confusing per the original publication.

He is not making an official communication about Donovan qualiying to the Games and will wait until further clarification and the official ISU list of qualifieres.

I mentioned to him that if the ISU comes with something different than what originally said, they would be in trouble and could face some process not only by Donovan but many many skaters

Philip Hersh has actual possible news:

Philip Hersh
@olyphil

1 / Mitch Moyer of USFS just told me top contenders to go to Nebelhorn in fall to try to confirm 3d US women’s spot at
@Beijing2022 may be asked to do same summer event so committee making choice has some more recent evidence to work with.

2 / "We will look at the deadline of entries for Nebelhorn and work back from there. The committee will be involved in that process of how the selections are made,” Moyer said in a text. (IMHO contenders are Bell, Glenn, Liu; Bell by far the most experienced at sr intnl level)

You now have: HUN CZE (THREE times) GBR FIN MEX UKR (twice) SWE ISR JPN all waiting it out for the official announcement.

Imagine having qualified skaters in 3 disciplines and the ISU holding off announcing if they are going to follow their own rules.

Donovan gave an interview to mexican media and he is saying that he is not qualified and missed out by one place after finishing 20th which means he believes what Mr. Wong, Hersh and american official say... bah who knows!

Thanks ISU for this mess

Though I read and read the rules and they are vague but if you analize it is clear, you earn the right to fight and get that spot at Nebelhorn it never says 'YOU GET THE SPOT AT WORLDS THAT NEEDS TO BE CONFIRMED/REGAINED' never uses thoses words that Mr. Wong have been using since the begining of all these

That's interesting because Brezina is saying they're being told by the ISU there that all 24 (well, 23 men minus the second Chinese skater) got a spot (and this is being retweeted by Jackie Wong before you accuse him of anything).

Source please?

There are no keepsies with these Olympic quota places. Why they think there is says a lot really. :shuffle:
Well, it sounds like the USFS delegates at the last ISU Congress didn't really read/understand the legislation they were voting on. Which says even more.

Though, I would be really annoyed if feds like China, USA, Japan, Canada, Russia and France all tried to snatch up these spots in the disciplines where they should be going to Nebelhorn to "confirm" them.

Breaking the ISU rules would not be the way to go....

So, just for fun, and since Worlds was over, I was re-reading that old ISU Congress thread I linked earlier in this thread to see if there was anything else interesting or useful in it. There wasn't really, but I did find this rather prophetic post from me :lol:

Even though this new rule seems pretty simple in theory, I have a feeling that we will have many misunderstandings about it in 2021-22.

Although in retrospect, that seems like a bit of an understatement.

Prescient is what it is. Perhaps you can begin planning your betting strategy for the Olympics already, lol.

Can anyone confirm that Ko/Ko qualified a spot in ice dance for Japan by placing 19th?
That's what I thought (and still think) but now I'm confused.
