2022–23 Canadian Women: News and Updates

We know that Kaiya Ruiter is going to Jr Worlds. If she does great there (top 3), is there a way that she could go to Sr Worlds with slightly/longer programs, as some skaters do in other Feds? Minimum Sr Numbers? Definitely has the age. Was 2nd at CS Ice Challenge as a senior, so she has the longer programs.

Kaiya doesn’t have the short program minimum.
 
Ruiter just missed the short program TES minimums at Ice Challenge (the judging was very stingy as she skated clean with her triple triple in the second half).

No Canadians are registered for the Challenge Cup later this month. Are there any other competitions before worlds to get the minimums?

I sound like a broken record I know but we need to send more Canadian women to internationals!

I first remember Dupuis when she won the virtual jr challenge during covid. She skated very well there. It was so great to see her deliver such a good skate on the big stage. Too bad she missed the lutz in the short because a) she surely would have got the TES minimums and b) her season best score would be higher and would improve her chances to get a grand prix pick next year. Maybe she'll get world team trophy now.

Seriously? This is getting ridiculous. There were some skaters at Euros too like Sofja Stepcenko who were quite good yet still missed the TES. I really hope the ISU ends up adjusting it before Worlds.

Yeah…if anything, Sr skaters who medal at an ISU-backed CS event should automatically qualify for the next Worlds, if selected by his/her federation.

Hey, right now I’m happy to see how Kaiya fares at Jr Worlds. It’s a tough field so a top-6 finish would be great, IMO. Kaiya will be going up against, for example:

USA’s three threats, incl Josephine Lee (Lee, Lee & Seo)
China’s Nini An
Estonia’s Niina Petrokina and super-adorable Maria Eliise Kaljuvere
Finland’s Iida Karhunen (my secret fave!)
France’s Schild
Georgia’s Gurgenidze
Italy’s Pezzetta
Japan’s Mao Shimada & Ami Nakai
Korea’s Jia Shin, Yujae Kim & “Cat” Kwon! 🐈‍⬛
Switz’s Kimmy Repond…on a roll!

Jr Worlds Women will be EPIC. I trust Kaiya to succeed…I really do!

Reflecting on Dupuis' performance this weekend - she was credited with rotating 7 triples in her free skate and no jumping passes received a net negative GOE. I was wondering how many Canadian women have done this under IJS or if it's ever happened at all.

Maybe just a coincidence, but when Meagan Duhamel was on TSL recently, after Canadian Nationals, she was really singing Fiona's praises and questioning why she had not been sent out by SC more. Well, now hopefully they can rectify that in the future.

Daleman also posted practice clips of her on the ice at what I believe was Mariposa in her story yesterday or the day before (can’t remember and the story has expired now). The blue wall is very distinctive and I recognized it right away.

Perhaps giving credence to some of the rumours on Twitter a couple of weeks ago that this might be her new training base? If that is true, there are some potentially interesting coaching choices there for her.

Totally agree re: Schizas. She looked completely checked-out at 4CCs, like she’d rather be anywhere else. I also hate that juniorish long program.

Doesn't Schizas have a very complicated schedule juggling attending full-time university and her various training rinks? Maybe it's all too much for her. And yes, the WWS program does not suit her at all. I really hope she dumps it for one of her previous LPs.
 
I was not fond of the LP MS had this past year. The music seemed inapt at times as compared to the performance. It would have been better just music without the vocals IMO

Yes and in interviews she prefers to talk about her studies and career beyond skating.

To me, she acts very much like someone who has accomplished all her skating goals and is wanting to move on but is being talked into staying on until other ladies are in place to take over the role. (Similar to Kurt Browning after he won Worlds in 1993 and wanted to retire but was talked into staying for 1994 Olympics.)

I looked up her parents and, wow, they both are hugely accomplished. It appears that Schizas wants to become a doctor (like Joannie Rochette:love:) so I'm not surprised that education is her number one priority.

That doesn't strike me as how she's approaching this at all. To me she comes across as frustrated by not being able to take the next step internationally to become a podium contender; she's done well domestically (and looks increasingly likely to get an Olympic team medal at some point), but she hasn't won anything at a Grand Prix or championship. I'd be surprised if her skating goals were accomplished.

Could be a little of column A and a little of column B. In any case, I'm sure Schizas knows what's best for her.
 
To me she is frustrated that she cannot perform at competitions like she does in practice. Very frustrating I would imagine. Not sure how much her coaching team focuses on mental strength training?

Bruno does coach some singles skaters as well (he coached Veronik for a bit, for instance).

She has big jumps, generally, but not a consistent 3-3, which I imagine she's aiming to make technical improvements there. Why Marcotte specifically, I'm not sure (beyond presumably not wanting to move to Edmonton).

Was Marcotte responsible for getting Duhamel's triple jumps under control when she switched to pairs? If so, I can see why he'd be a good choice.

Maybe it has more to do with where she wants to pursue her post secondary education? Oakville might put her closer to her school of choice? I'm assuming based on her age that she is graduating from secondary school in June.

Are we learning indirectly that she plans to go to U of Guelph or McMaster? :) I would think it’s a bit early but you may be right. Danielle Rose is still listed as choreographer.

Marcotte had several male students in Montreal before moving to Oakville. I am thinking of Liam Firrus and Elajhe Balde??
