2022–23 Canadian Women: News and Updates

I hope Dupuis will get the spot. And I hope they will send Bombardier to world team trophy to get an isu season best score. I mean assuming Canada has qualified for it lol

There's a thought. Skate Canada officials, get on this.
That's not a bad idea, especially if they send Ruiter to both 4CCs and Jr Worlds. Give Bombardier the WTT spot as a consolation. I'd forgotten that counts for the SB Top 75.

Daleman went in 2013 after her first year in senior so there is precedent.
Yes, but she was also second at Nationals that year IIRC so there was no drama in leaving someone like Lacoste off the team-- especially after the Nationals medal ceremony debacle where she lost a medal last-minute as it was.

I know everyone is on board the Ruiter excitement, but I think Bombardier is more finished with bigger, stronger elements at this point. I really do think Ruiter gets 4CC and Junior Worlds, and I hope Fiona is strongly considered for WTT.

I’m currently  that the main CBC just asked Josée for “an unbiased take” on her daughter’s strengths as a skater.

Great competition today, with solid skates from many of the women. I agree with the idea of Kaiya for 4CC and junior worlds and Fiona for WTT. They need to set her up as well as they can for next season and that event would help.

I give A+ to Fiona for her dedication and big jumps but she is rarely on a straight axis and that will never help her GOE. I thought she was the most junior looking senior of the last two groups. She clearly dedicates herself to feel the music and finishing her moves but it looks studied. I hope she will get more fluidity and complexity with the years to come. She will grow as a skater but the second mark goes way higher to Ruiter that Bombardier .

Yep. But she medaled at Ice Challenge in Graz and and was solid in the long. She has been 7 international assignments and has medaled in 4/7 of them. I think that shows pretty good consistency.
Yes, but the discussion in question was how to get Bombardier senior international seasons best scores since she didn't have internationals and will not be sent to 4CC because of it. Ruiter is likely to get World Juniors and I really think 4CC, as well.

Sorry my response was still in midthought....I just don't think that World Team Trophy is a place for someone to do their first international senior assignment. For an event that only happens every 2 years, each country will be wanting to send their best. Ruiter has a more technically difficult long program than Schizas. She will be just about a month shy of 17 when the competition happens, and Schizas was sent to her first Worlds at 17. Just a thought.

Eh, most countries look at WTT as a fun event to cap off the season. Sure, they would like to win/medal, but it's not as serious as any other ISU Championship or even the TE at the Olympics. WTT would actually be a great event to send someone like Bombardier for her senior debut as it's more low-key, and relaxed, plus it's often one of the most over-scored events of the season.

As I recall Gracie Gold and Gabrielle Daleman made their senior debut at world team trophy (in 2012 and 2013 respectively) so it's not unheard of. No one is denying Ruiter's ability but Bombardier has had a few good competitions in a row and really deserves an opportunity to set her up for next season and possibly qualify for a senior grand prix assignment.

WTT also has good money to be won, so I'm sure many skaters would like to go as well. The majority of the time, it seems whoever goes to World's gets WTT as well, perhaps as a reward? But I could totally be off about this.

And nothing for Bombardier :(

Edit: but bigs congrats to the others!

Which is what we’ve been discussing. ;) She doesn’t have the minimums to go anywhere besides World Juniors.

Agreed. She has really improved though since the summer and I think once she is a little more consistent and can include the triple triple into her program she will get the assignments. I think Andre B has done a fabulous job developing the next gen program and Canadians proves that, I think this quad looks good for the women’s program and there is a great new stock behind these seniors skaters as well. Bombardier is a little still in both camps .

I saw a post online with David Wilson working with Kaiya at the Cricket on the Jr version of her free program post Canadians.
Thanks for reminding me - link to Wilson's photo with Kaiya: https://www.instagram.com/p/CniSZnoOpu6/

Fiona's proud coach, Ken Rose (I remember watching him compete when he was young!) shared some very nice pics: https://www.instagram.com/p/CnewvKgrAzJ/
Amazing performances on Canada’s biggest stage this weekend! Watching you rise to the occasion and embrace the moment was so much fun and seeing you climb up onto the podium at your first Senior Nationals was pretty cool too! A truly incredible accomplishment. Honoured to be part of your journey and can’t wait to see what the future holds for you. Congratulations, Fiona. You have so much to be proud of.
Thank you to our team of coaches that helped Fiona this season. Couldn’t have done it without you! And thank you to Danielle Rose & Sebastien Britten for the beautiful choreography!
I'm happy to hear Britten was/is involved with her choreography. :)

Props to Sara-Maude Dupuis for her amazing free skate at 4CC. If only she had made the triple lutz in the short. She ended up the top Canadian at this event which I'm sure no one would have predicted. I really have nothing else to say about the Canadian women at this event however...

All 3 ladies in the top 11. A clean Maddie likely would not have been higher than 8th or 9th, but holy WOW for Sara-Maude. She has such wonderful jumping technique. If she keeps it up, she'll be a challenger at Canadians. And she's definitely earned a host GP spot next year IMO.

I first met Sara-Maude and her mother in Laval in 2018 - we were staying at the same hotel and attending Skate Canada International. We ended up eating breakfast together a couple of times. The following summer she was scheduled to compete at the Minto Summer Skate in Novice - she was there but was injured and didn't skate. I remember talking to her mother there. She has come a long way (y)

Really great outing for Dupuis! I
loved the confidence in the long program. She has a really nice jump technique; it’s very tidy and efficient. I’ve always had a soft spot for her coach too. He was the first person I ever saw do a triple axel live (at a long ago Divisionals ) and that always stuck with me. Too bad the sp mins are still missing, because it would be nice to have a solid backup plan for worlds in case whatever is going on with Schizas isn’t resolved or gets worse in the next month.

And on that topic, I kind of feel like there needs to be a real come to Schizas moment for Madeline right now. Nothing about this season has been working. She looks tired and burned out to me. I keep hoping she’s get her groove back, but she just doesn’t seem to be able to get there this season. If she’s going to continue through to worlds though, something needs to change. Frankly, I’d start with dumping the free skate. It hasn’t evolved since the first outing. I would go back to the Umbrellas of Cherbourg right now. I think that’s a better suited program for her and if nothing else, it might manufacture some excitement about her training.

She’s also taken some odd falls and some weird buckling of her feet on landings in the last couple competitions. I do wonder if there’s an injury there that they haven’t been public about. And if that were to be the case, or even if something fluky happens between now and worlds, what exactly is the grand plan for SC? They send Daleman to worlds?

It doesn’t look like they are sending Bombardier to Challenge Cup to even try to get minimums (is there another event she could still be sent to?).

This is a really precarious position that SC has put themselves on right now.
