2019 Russian Cup Final, Feb. 18-22, Novgorod

At ISU competitions, the PCS cannot go above a certain level when a skater has a fall/major error. 9.25 9.25 8.75 9.25 8.75 would be the highest achievable by their rules. In other words- 72.40 maximum for a ladies FS.

I thought the Russian Fed was more or less following this at Nationals. Most federations elect to adapt the same rules that the ISU establishes, but looking at Medvedeva’s PCS- either they didn’t OR they broke their own rules to benefit her. So I was curious if anyone had seen the Russian FS Fed rulebook.

BTW- Medvedeva scored 74.40. Those two points obviously made a huge difference.
Selective application. They had no problems applying it to Gubanova.

Are we interpreting the rules differently? I thought 9.50 9.50 9.00 9.50 9.00 would be highest achievable score for PCS with 1 fall. 74.40 max is still possible in PCS per rules, so Med did get a "perfect" score in PCS I suppose.

On the other hand, compared to their international PB’s in both programs, Tuk’s PCS was more inflated than Zhenya’s was - among other things, she got 35.52 here for a SP program with a fall compared to 32.99 clean at NHK. So it cuts both ways.

The rules say those scores or above— meaning the ones you listed should not be attainable, either.

This isn’t the question here. I get that it’s a domestic competition and inflation is obvious, but I was curious whether the judges ignored the rules or whether Russia has not implemented such rules.

never mind. I misread something while I am sick making my post pointless. But, I’m happy Medvedeva skated well. Or uh “Nia” as she is now to be known apparently?

I don't think they've implemented these. At least I know they do not follow the fall deduction rule.

ETA: NVM. There are different rules for senior vs juniors.

I understand that - but your final statement was that the extra two points Z got made a difference to the outcome. As if the result might be unfair.

And my point was that whether or not the judges ignored PCS rules in Z’s favor, they counterbalanced it bc overall, they didn’t inflate Z and L equally - they inflated L more.

Happy for Janny and Liza! Too bad for Stasia but she’s proven to be a risk in big competitions more than a few times at this point. Next year!

No.
Will all my love to Liza, scoring in the LP was absolutely fair.

Anyway, I don’t know why we need to discuss it here, when there are two more threads to :argue:, :soapbox: and :EVILLE: over the results.

As you were there at the arena, what is your opinion on Gubanova’s skating?

Give her all the components :swoon::swoon::swoon:

Am absolutely biased here - I like her since she was 10 or 11 (and she is an exception as I usually don't pay a lot of attention to novices and juniors outside of top-5). She already had very decent skating skills, posture and lines at that age :swoon:

I have seen her live several times after that - at Junior Nationals in 2016/17, at Senior nationals last year, at some small local events and etc - she always stood out with her skating skills, deep edges and musicality.
Last year she was going trough puberty and her jumps and skating seemed to be a little heavy, but this season she came back to her usual self :)

Even despite some errors, she was clearly the best one in terms of PCS yesterday, even through some jumps were telegraphed. And I liked her long program - well-choreographed, age-appropriate, really suits her style.

Thank you for sharing your impressions!

I've never seen her live and seeing her skating on a video has always left me a bit indifferent. So, I wondered how her skating might look at the arena.

I have never seen her skate live, but I loved her when I first saw her video. She was 10 or 11 at that time. I keep hoping that she will get a chance to go to worlds. I wonder if she could add either a 3A or a quad?
