2018 Olympics Team Event Qualification

Is it just me who find it complicated a bit?

It's actually pretty straightforward:
1. They rank the countries by points (they have a formula based on WS and certain events)
2. They determine after Nebelhorn which countries has enough skaters/teams to be able to claim a spot (three or four skaters/teams qualified in the individual events)
3. The countries have to claim their spot by filling in a form by the deadline (yesterday), even if they've not yet qualified, but could be qualifeid if they get a skater/team off the alternates list by the final deadline.
4. At the final deadline, they determine who is going among those who filed the paperwork in time.

Before the deadline was over, Spain had only qualified for two, and their spot in the top 10 would go to KOR (#11) if:
1. They didn't file the paperwork in time
2. They filed the paperwork, but one more Pair doesn't WD from the individual Pairs event, moving the Spanish Pair from the alternates list to the event.

They didn't file the paperwork in time, so KOR gets the last spot. However, if another team WD's from the individual Pairs event, the Spanish Pairs team should be able to take their place. Right now, it sounds like this could happen if the Duskova can't make the Olympics, because she's still recovering from injury.

Wait, wait, wait. But Spain is still second alternate in pairs. First alternate is still Belarus, right? Why are we talking about Belarus as if they disappeared? Are we saying Belarus did not submit them as an Olympic entry or are people still talking about Euros?

When will we know the individual skaters who will be competing for each Team? Will Teams be posted before we see it Live? I really only care about Russia, Canada, USA, since those are the only countries who will ever win medals in this totally unfair event. [/sarcasm off]. I'm assuming those countries will be trading out 2 skaters each.

Given that North Korea did not file the paperwork on time and were still granted a place at the Games it is inconceivable that any other nation that also failed to do so will be denied the same concession. That is just not going to happen.

Ummm...no. No other country is likely to lob a nuke into South Korea during the games. The IOC is and was going to do everything in its power to get North Korean athletes into the Olympics to try and minimize the chances for disruption. The same does not apply to Belarus or Spain. (And I don't blame the IOC for this one bit.)

Right. Spain does not have a qualified pair or lady.

North Korea was given the "host" spot as part of the "Korea Unified Team"

The spot that went to North Korea was called a wildcard spot and wad allocated by the IOC.

The host spot went to South Korea, and was allocated by the ISU.

Spain was in the running for the TE if their Pair moved from the alternates list to the individual event. Had that happened, they would have knocked South Korea out if the TE. ETA: Unless it's true Spain didn't file the TE paperwork in time, in which case, it wouldn't have mattered to the TE whether the Spanish Pair is in or out

2) CONFIRMATION AND ENTRY PROCEDURE

If an NOC/ISU Member has two (2) or three (3) entries in an individual OWG competition/discipline then the NOC/ISU Member must confirm the name of the participants who will compete in the Short Program/Short Dance of the Team Event as follows:

Men Single Skating and Pair Skating Short Programs:
Latest at 10:00 a.m., local time on the site of the OWG, the day before the Team Event Men Single Skating and Pair Skating Short Programs [Thursday, Feb. 8].

Ladies Single Skating Short Program and Ice Dance Short Dance:
Latest at 10:00 a.m., local time on site of the OWG, the day before the Team Event Ladies Single Skating Short Program and the Team Event Ice Dance Short Dance [Saturday, Feb. 10].

Free Skating/Free Dance:
For the five (5) Teams qualified for the Free Skating/Free Dance of the Team Event the NOC/ISU Member must declare within the Team Leaders Meeting, scheduled 10 min. after the Team Event Ladies Single Skating Short Program, the names of the pairs skating the Team Event Pair Skating Free Skating segment [Sunday, Feb. 11 at 13:15 in Korea].

During the Team Leaders Meeting at 15:30 h on the day of the Pair Skating Free Skating [Sunday, Feb. 11], the Team Leaders must declare the skater in Men Single Skating, the skater in Ladies Single Skating and the Ice Dance couples, who have been selected to skate the Free Skating/Free Dance segment.

In principle, the skaters/couples competing in the Free Skating must be the same as those having competed in the Short Program/Short Dance, however each Team has the option to replace up to two (2) entries (two Single Skaters or one Single Skater (Lady or Man) plus one couple (Pair Skating or Ice Dance) or both the Pair Skating and Ice Dance Couples) between the Short Program/Short Dance and the Free Skating/Free Dance provided such qualified skaters/couple is part of the accredited delegation on site of the OWG.

South Korea earned it's own way into the team event. Spain could have had it if they had qualified a pair.
