2018 Olympics - Qualification rules for singles, pairs, dance & Team event

The Czech Test skate went in Ostrava last weekend. Duskova / Bidar were great in the short, scoring nearly 70 points with all Level 4 elements! (and ya know Czech pannels are always harsh and strict in most cases and many skaters are recieveing their sesons best in international competitions rather than in Czech domestic ones), they were struggleing with lifts in the free but it was so short period after Martin's bicycle crash (three weeks ago - he lost three teeth, being battered and in a big pain but thankfully no big injuries, nothing broken or distorted. They were planning to skate through most of the elements in test skates at first but as last week went well they were showing whole programs. Good guys. SP is last years LA 40 and they have new FP to Cirque de Soleil mix choreographed by Rostislav Sinicyn which looks very good). Cortney Mansour / Michal Ceska won over Nicole Kuzmichova / Alexandr Sinicyn by small margin around 5 points mostly because of the great last year FD to Godfather even with aborted dance spin. The biggest suprise came in ladies competition, firstly the new look Eliska Brezinova, very thin, skating fast, great jumps if jumped as usual but also some artistry and both programmes looked very seniorish, the other suprise came when Eliska has started the free program great (beautiful first three jumps 3Lz, 3T, 3Lo, 2A) and then wasn't able to continue on a high note even fell in the step sequence. Still everybody in the arena has thaught Eliska won but finally she was third. The Oly qualifiyng spot is going to Ukolova who made less mistakes to others. Second was Hanzlikova and Brezinova only third, all of them within 2,5 points - one element.

So Czech team to Nebelhorn is:
Ladies: Elizaveta Ukolova (sub. Michaela Lucie Hanzlikova, Eliska Brezinova)
Pairs: Anna Duskova / Martin Bidar (no subs)
Ice Dance: Cortney Mannsour / Michal Ceska (sub. Nicole Kuzmichova / Alexandr Sinicyn).

From the end of the Javier Fernandez article just posted in GSD (re. Nebelhorn Trophy):

"Sonia Lafuente will be looking for a place for women and newcomers Laura Barquero & Aritz Maestu, which will do the same in the category of couple. Lafuente will replace the initially designated Valentina Matos, who is recovering from an injury."
Thanks to @levineismine for posting the article link (in the Kiss & Cry thread) that explains why Matos is listed for Spain and Lafuente not listed at all:
Latest updates are that Lafuente is also injured so Matos will go despite not being 100%

Kim Cheremsky had skated for Ukraine internationally up the 2015/16 season - had no idea she switched countries. Don't know where that puts Morgan Flood in terms of her future plans.

No surprises really in that list, other than perhaps Gala over Reznichenko. As mentioned earlier in the thread, Shuran Yu got the nod based on her win at Southeast Asian Games over the weekend.

cheremsky also skated for israel at some point. i wonder why the country hopping...

No surprises really in that list, other than perhaps Gala over Reznichenko.

My earlier hunch on whether this choice for Poland's men's entrant made the most sense turned out to be correct.

Reznichenko won Slovenia Open over the weekend and is now Poland's updated entrant for Nebelhorn.

ETA confirmation re. the number of qualifying spots from the ISU's Pairs FS recap article: "Originally four spots were available, but since France returned their second Pairs quota place, a fifth spot has opened up for the competitors at Nebelhorn Trophy."

Congratulations! (interesting combo of countries on that list, lol, yay for small country teams!)

So now that Israel has qualified in 3 disciplines, they are eligible for the team event!

I doubt Krasnapolski would have partnered with her for this season and competed at Nebelhorn if she wasn't eligible to get Israeli citizenship in time for the Olys.

Probably true, but I just hadn't recalled reading anything official regarding current or pending citizenship (I also was too lazy to look very hard so I thought I'd just ask :shuffle: ).

Italy, Korea and Ukraine have more than 1 qualified man to fill their respective Olympic spots. Korea's selections will be based on the combined score from 2 qualifying competitions plus Nationals.

SkateSweden writes the following on the webpage:
"To be selected to represent Sweden in the OG by the Swedish Olympic Committee the figure skaters need to meet the Swedish selection criterias - result and skating for level of top-eight on selected competitions like Grand Prix and the Challenger series during autumn".

Here's the 11-page PDF document published by the ISU:
New direct link is: http://www.isu.org/docman-documents...-qualification-system-figure-skating-v11/file
Qualification Places
Men Single Skating: 30
Ladies Single Skating: 30
Pair Skating: 20 (40 athletes)
Ice Dance: 24 (48 athletes)
Total: 148
Team * : 10 teams
*NOCs/ISU Members who do not have qualified skaters/couples in an individual Olympic Winter Games (OWG) event (Men Single Skating, Ladies Single Skating, Pair Skating, Ice Dance), may be allocated one (1) “Additional Athletes Quota” place and enter into only in the Figure Skating Team Event. If applicable, each NOC may only use the “Additional Athletes Quota” place in only one (1) event (Men Single Skating, Ladies Single Skating, Pair Skating or Ice Dance) of the Figure Skating Team Event.

The Additional Athletes Quota of up to ten (10) skaters will be used giving preference to the best-ranked “incomplete Teams” according to the ranking of the Figure Skating Team qualification list. The Additional Athletes Quota beyond the above-mentioned ten (10) skaters cannot be exceeded and if not sufficient, the lower ranked “incomplete Teams” according to the ranking of the Figure Skating Team qualification list, may in such case not be able to complete their team.

With Conners/Krasnopolski qualifying today that makes eight countries who qualify for consideration for the TE with individual competitors in at least three disciplines:

Qualified for all four:
  • RUS
  • CAN
  • USA
  • FRA
  • CHN
Qualified for three so far:
  • ITA
  • GER
  • ISR
Tomorrow, teams with great chances to qualify a third discipline are:
  • JPN (Dance)
  • AUS and UKR (Ladies)
GER has a solid chance of qualifying a fourth individual discipline (Dance)

The Worlds (or Euros/4Cs or Jr. Worlds) WS points are already set. Part two is GP/GPF (or JGP/JGPF).

I know it could never happen, but how cool would it be if N Korea's qualified pair could fill that spot for S Korea in the team event?

Very UNcool if that then leapfrogged Korea above other countries that qualified three disciplines off their own bat.

Agreed it would be very wrong to do the above.

However, if they qualified for the team event on their own and were merely using the NK team in the team event instead of their own pairs team, I would not have an issue with it as it would not take anyone's place.

That is what I meant since it was looking reasonably hopeful for S Korea's Ice Dance team, who did end up qualifying through their fourth place finish at Nebelhorn and allowing for S Korea to compete in the team event.

And the Ukraine. :D (Germany earned a spot at the Worlds).

Thanks for the correction! For some reason I thought Germany hadn't gotten one yet! And Ukraine! Nail biter.. haven't seen hardly a thing from Isadora Williams in years and here she puts out two good skates to clinch a spot.
