1980 Olympic Compulsory FX:

Comaneci https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_rPnxrGo2A
vs
Shaposhnikova https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0mnjl62xiI
vs
Kim https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLqR7H_q1dw
vs
Gnauck (No Video)
vs
Eberle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8K0surB8Juc

--------------------------

These were the top scorers in compulsories and the top finishers in the event finals. Who is the best?

I included Gnauck just in case video surfaces because she meets the criteria to be included just as much as Kim.

1st - Comaneci
2nd - Kim
3rd - toss-up, with a very slight edge going to Eberle over Shaposhnikova. Eta: I think (for me) Shap’s ankle wrap distracts from the exercise. 🤷‍♀️

Imo, Nadia owned the floor. Great flow, smooth, no hesitation... She connects the entire exercise from start to finish without pause. No contest, really.

Comaneci and Kim are the only ones to consistently find the accents in the music.

Comaneci uses her lines to great effect.

I like Kim's jumps, leaps, and kicks.

ETA:

There was one little thing, a turn, that made me go with Kim ... but I might change my mind later.

Shaposhnikova's music is so different - I'm reading from the comments on the videos that they had three difrerent pieces to choose from? Is that right? If so how are you supposed to be able to make the direct comparison that was the sole purpose of a compulsory exercise?

So based on that I am tying:
Comaneci - Crisp, clear, ultra clean just a slightly disappointing amplitude on the jump split in the middle of the first pass. But her longer lines in Moscow are really beautiful and I always thought her optional exercises should have taken a more classical tone. Instead we got dodgy rock & roll mash up's to Marta Karolyi's idea of 'choreography'. :scream:

Shaposhnikova - Musically this just looks like a completely different routine, but as the Soviets used a live pianist she is able to play with the music soooo much more. Her split position is simply perfection; equalled only by Mostepanova IMO. Every opportunity to hit a split position, be it forward, side or back are taken and her penche arabesque positions are beautiful. I was really very moved by this routine and it's the only one I needed to watch again straight away, such was my gut emotional reaction to it.

ETA: I just convinced myself with that rationale to give it to Shaposhnikova. Just :swoon: and :wuzrobbed levels of beautiful!

I just had a hunt around and found a video I didn't even know I had - which just happens to be the compulsory floor from Moscow for Romania, DDR and USSR. I am not fully listing this video as it will likely be deleted and I don't want to risk my youtube account so can I please ask to not share this around? Thanks :)

And I promise I did my deliberation based on the original clips posted. I had no idea that Comaneci and Shaposhnikova had the same score!! I stand by my decision though and big shout out to Maria Filatova for her rendition of this exercise. She doesn't have the lines of Shaposhnikova but she wrings every ounce of emotion out of the choreography in a way that Daniella Silivas did in her 1988 Compulsory FX. Woefully undermarked IMO but that was the starting order for you back then I guess?

I can't pick. I would put it between Natalia, Nadia, and Nelli, but all for different reasons. I watched all of them several times and I can't decide.

I found it interesting that none of them could do that turn at the end of the routine very well. The one gymnast who did perform that turn well was Mukhina. But of course, Mukhina wasn't at the Olympics due to her tragic accident.

Can't believe I didn't notice this until now. One routine I really liked in terms of the dance was the one from Silvia Hindorff. She was a beautiful dancer.

Maria Filatova's routine had 9.90 written all over it, easily grouped with Emilia and Maxi.
