Fall 2024-Summer 2025 New/Returning/Streaming/TV Shows

When I was traveling earlier in the month, I saw a book called "Fake Skating" in the airport bookstore. It had a typical romance cover. I had never heard of it before. Has anyone read it?

I just finished Heated Rivalry thanks to a telegram fans channel and I was stunned, speechless, don't know what to say, maybe one of the best series I have ever seen in my life. I couldn't wait to search for the book The Long Game that follows where the series ends and things will get interesting indeed for Shane & Ilya

And yes, the phone talking while Ilya speaks his heart out in russian while Moonlight Sonata played in the background was pure cinema! outstanding from Connor to portrait act and project all that feeling speaking in perfect russian accent, just wow

Everything about it was brilliant. There’s so many layers to the characters, so many layers to the plot. And I’ve never seen such nicely written character development in a long time.

All the actors were brilliant .. most of these people should be nominated for Emmys and awards. The fact that Connor got the call eight days to play Ilya before they shot. He had to speak with a Russian dialect coach on the phone for eight days to learn to speak some Russian, and to get the dialect down, can you believe that? Until I googled him and learned, I think he is Canadian, I thought he was for sure Russian.

I prefer how Rachel Reid wrote heated rivalry series over Annie Proulx for Brokeback mountain. Both are good, but Rachael was really good.

Jacob Tierney did such a good job as a show runner, the writer and Director.

And all of this was done on a shoestring budget and two cameras.

Connor is actually from West Texas 😊

Episodes 5 and 6 really made up for what I thought was just an okay start to the series. Until then I had enjoyed Ep 3 the most with the secondary love story, but Ilya’s monologue in Ep 5 changed all that. And Ep 6 was simply brilliant.

Ilya appears in the other books in the series, too - I really recommend Role Model, in which he has an important role.

Connor Storrie is from Odessa, Texas. Hudson Williams is Canadian.

My understanding is that native Russian speakers can tell Storrie is not one, but he sounds very, very good.

I feel the same way. I almost gave up after episode 2, but I enjoyed episode 3 so decided to keep watching, since I had seen good things mentioned in this thread about episode 5. Glad I kept watching and now feel episodes 1 and 2 kind of had to be “bad” for character and story development.

Same here, I was not into the series immediately after watching episode 1 and just tuned in to episode 3 with Scott and Kip then I totally got into and wanted to see the next episodes, did not watch episode 2 and did after the season finale, like you mentioned first two were for context and character development with Shane and Ilya, I even hated Rozanov but Oh My what a surprising turning of events and emotions that I ended really liking him and appreciating his development until realizing he was the one that fell in love first and fell hard

Also, Dylan Moskovitch is in the show as a male singles skater. Killing it with a single axel! Just noticed him as I rewatch the series tonight.

Episode 5 is brilliant but episode 3 is the one I rewatch the most. I love Kip’s friend group so much. I hope to see more of Scott and Kip next season just to see what Elena, Maria, Shawn, Kyle and Kip’s dad are up to.

Wait, what? Was Dylan the skater who was performing singles at the Sochi Olympics?

I finished reading The Long Game, book that follows where Heated Rivalry season 1 ended and I fear Scott and Kip story wont get that much in a second season though Jacob Tierney may sneak them a little bit but given that The Long Game has lot of content if they follow the book story and development of events between Ilya/Shane´s 'official' but still secret relationship

I hope they give Season 2 at least 8 episodes like author Rachel Reid mentioned in an interview

And that we could get a spin-off for just Scott and Kip, I wont spoil but there is enough content for them to have a series of their own even if just for one season

Kyle has his own book, Common Goal - maybe they'll use some of it next season? Though apparently it doesn't really intersect with Shane and Ilya's story (I haven't read it myself).

I think it actually streamed 2 or 3 years ago, but I’m just now watching Rabbit Hole with Kiefer Sutherland. Did anyone else watch? I have 3 more episodes to go but I am enjoying it. Convoluted, you do have to pay attention.

And holy cow, was that a convoluted ending, and I’m not actually positive of everything that happened and who did what.

I am watching Apollo 13 on Starz right now. Somehow I never saw it. I heard a podcast where Kevin Bacon describes how they filmed the sequences where they were weightless —they went up on the NASA vomit comet rocket 600 times to get all the footage. It’s nice to watch and think about how good the science and engineering generally were, and the explorer and patriotic attitudes that they had.

I love that movie. I'm not an overly emotional person in general, but its story really hit me in the feels, y'know? It wasn't just about these heroic men and their journey, but also how everyone behind the scenes worked so damn hard to get them home, how worried their families were, etc. It painted a full picture of what space exploration meant for everyone involved. And it was a nice touch at the end when they talked about where their lives took them afterward.

I loved it too. When you look at every emerging problem with that mission you appreciate the skill, work and risk involved in getting them home.

I think Ron Howard did a fantastic job in creating a sense of danger and concern for a story where you already know the ending. That's an incredible skill. It's one of those film I will happily watch whenever I see it pop up as an option on TV. I was shocked and surprised when someone told me it was generally thought to not be a great film.

From what I understand the criticism of Apollo 13 has more to do with its historical inaccuracies than its cinematic merits. The acting, cinematography, etc., were stellar. But they took a lot of liberties with the truth for dramatic effect. It's still a great movie.

I thought it was known for its general accuracy. They took some liberties with the concerns over re-entry, and I don’t think there was any arguing among the astronauts. So were you thinking of some other things?

I think those were the main ones, along with the shortening of the re-entry blackout. Some dialogue/character portrayals were also exaggerated for dramatic effect, as I recall. But Jim Lovell was a consultant on the film, so there weren't any major inaccuracies. Some people like to nit-pick whenever dramatic liberties are taken. I'm not one of them. It remains one of my favorites.
I was well aware of the historical event because I had an older brother who was really into all things space-flight. I remember what a big deal it was at the time even though we are not American and did not live in the USA. The scenes of people glued to TV news and signs everywhere praying for the astronauts is absolutely spot on.

Like others here, Apollo 13 is one of my favourite movies and if I see it in the TV listings I try to catch it, but I have also captured it and saved it to watch anytime. There was a TV program that used to compare films, tv programs, etc. based on historical events to actual historical records. I recall that most of the differences were pretty minor, like combining the actions of many multiple people into just a few characters in the film. In fact I think they pointed out a number of pretty dramatic moments that were left out of the movie, but realistically it had to be condensed down to fit the format of a movie. (Unfortunately I don't appear to have saved the program. I think the series was called something like "The True Story" or "The Real Story".) I played the movie for my aunt, who had never seen it, then followed it up by playing the comparison - great to watch back-to-back. She really enjoyed it.

There was another 2-part documentary in 2014 called "13 Factors that saved Apollo 13", which is very interesting, though it makes no comparison to the film.

I saw Apollo 13 in a movie theater when it originally came out with 2 co-worker and was absolutely absorbed from beginning to end. After the show we all agreed it was great movie. Then my jaw dropped when my youngest co-worker said, "Imagine if that really happened".
Boy you know you're getting old when that happens - like the time an even younger co-worker commented on one of the significant anniversaries of JFK's assassination, "Apparently it was a big deal back then."
