‘26-27 Site Rumors Nationals & Skate America

There are plenty of cities - both major metropolitan and mid-major metros that have two arenas. Just last night, I was going through Wikipedia's list of indoor arenas in the US. Off the top of my head -

Birmingham AL
Mobile AL
Anaheim CA
Palm Desert/Indio CA
Sacramento CA
San Jose CA
Denver CO
Washington DC
Atlanta GA
Jacksonville FL
Miami FL
Chicago IL
Fort Wayne IN
Indianapolis IN
Des Moines IA
Lexington KY
Louisville KY
Boston MA
Detroit MI
Grand Rapids MI
Minneapolis/St Paul MN
Kansas City MO
Lincoln NE
Las Vegas NV
New York City (both NJ and NY)
Rochester NY
Columbus OH
Oklahoma City OK
Tulsa OK
Portland OR
Hershey PA
Sioux Falls SD
Memphis TN
Nashville TN
Dallas/Fort Worth TX
Houston TX
San Antonio TX
Salt Lake City UT
Richmond VA
Seattle/Tacoma WA
Milwaukee WI
Ontario, CA - Toyota Arena (formerly Citizens Business Bank Arena)
  1. Skate America was held there in 2011
  2. 2010 US Synchronized Championships held there
  3. Served by Ontario Intl Airport, as well as LAX, Orange County, Burbank and Palm Springs within driving distance.

National Development Team Championships would not necessarily have sufficient slots for all Pairs Final entries or for all Dance Final entries.

For example, 14 intermediate pairs competed at Pairs Final in 2025-26 season.
For juvenile/intermediate/novice, only 8 pairs at each level will advance from Pairs Final to National Development Team Championships in 2026-27 season.
11 novice dance teams competed at Dance Final in 2025-26 season.
For juvenile/intermediate/novice, only 10 dance teams at each level will advance from Dance Final to National Development Team Championships in 2026-27 season.

The USFS page at link below is up to date for 2026-27 season.
Scroll down for a (mostly) helpful chart: "Advancement Pathway for Pairs and Ice Dance Teams".
(Minor not-helpful exception: In pathway for junior/senior pairs/dance, the chart erroneously refers to singles sectional final, instead of pairs or dance final. Yes, I know that pairs and dance finals are held alongside singles sectional finals, but conflation of discipline finals is a pet peeve of mine.)

Regarding pairs/dance quotas at National Development Team Championships, addendum for @just tuned in:

Although USFS Combined Report of Action (after Governing Council in May 2025) said:
• Pairs: Top eight (8) at the U.S. Pairs Final (two warm-up groups)
• Ice Dance: Top ten (10) at the U.S. Ice Dance Final (two warm-up groups)

RFP (apparently published in Aug 2025, per its URL) says: "Max. of 12 teams" per level for entries in pairs and dance.

So I guess we have to wait and see ... perhaps there will be more clarity after 2026 Governing Council?

I was only listing the cities that have two arenas in the metropolitan area that meet the requirements of 1 with at least 10k capacity and 1 with at least 2k capacity. I'm not sure if the Ontario Convention Center has ice-making capacity, though I'd guess there's something somewhat nearby that could accommodate the lower levels.

There are plenty of other arenas that have a capacity in the 9-10k range (Spokane, for instance, has a hockey capacity of 9916) which could also host (though I'm sure people would be lining up for a trip to Spokane as fast as they would for Rochester, Grand Rapids or Des Moines, lol).

There are a lot of interesting options, IMO, provided interest exists. Louisville, Mobile or Richmond wouldn't be terrible choices (@PRlady - would you go if Richmond wound up hosting?)

It’s two hours away, maybe just to see Dance. We went there Wednesday to see a great exhibition at the VMA but 4.5 hours driving was a lot.

How many cities have 2 rinks that can serve as competition venues? Greensboro had the practice rink at the Coliseum but no other competition rink( there is a ice facility nearby that holds hockey games but its small). I guess only bigger cities will be considered as viable options.
Portland, OR has Moda Center and Veterans Memorial Coliseum in the same complex. Nationals was held there in 2005. I know the weather was miserable for that event with ice and snow, but that was an outlier. As I recall, attendance was good, even for the novice and junior events.

The weather was great for most of that week. The ice storm came in on Friday overnight and made it impossible to get around on the weekend. I live in the SW PDX suburbs and missed out on the weekend competitions because I couldn't get over to the Rose Quarter - driving was out of the question and public transit from my neck of the woods was a mess.

Ontario Skate America was a weird one. There was no advertising so the arena was basically empty.
Yeah it was absolutely DEAD in there. And they blocked off the whole judges' side so it wouldn't look totally pathetic on TV. I had to bumrush past a security guard just to get over there to take photos of the dance podium lol.

I can assure you that, much as I would love a skating competition to be here, Richmond does not have 2 facilities to host national or international skating events - the 2 standard ice facilities (1 within a mile of where I live, and 1 at least 10 miles away) are nowhere near capacity for even practice events. The Richmond Coliseum has been closed to the public for many years, and there are no viable plans yet to replace or refurbish it, sadly,

@PRlady, I go to VMFA very often but have not yet seen the Alicia Keys/Swizz Beats Giants exhibit which opened recently. It looks absolutely wonderful - is this what you saw?

Since I’m definitely going to Euros in Lausanne next year (husband’s daughter lives in Basel, the next city over, so it’s a twofer) I’m not going to Nats unless it’s in DC or Baltimore.
Philly?

I really enjoyed when Nats was in Portland. Even the ice storm didn't impact us much as we were staying at a VRBO right on the Light Rail line that went to the arena. It just made the whole thing more memorable.

They could have the lower level events at the suburban rink where they had Pacific Coast Sectionals this year. I'm not sure how far it is from Vegas proper, though.
It's in Henderson, which is on SE of Las Vegas proper. A quick check of Google Maps says it's a 25 min drive between Tropicana Ave where the Orleans Arena, MGM Grand Arena & T-Mobile Arena are located (Orleans doesn't have the capacity the USFS wants for the main arena though).

It's longer at rush hour though. :D

That’s what we saw. So worth it. DH left the US last Friday, I follow after Xmas, and the exhibit closes in early March so it was our last chance to see it. It was featured on PBS NewsHour and it really is special.

I wonder how many of these cities would be interested in hosting a Skate America. I'll set the over/under at 2.

I wish I'd known you were coming. I would have been able to get you free tickets with my membership and meet you there. Next exhibition maybe :) - it will apparently have to go far to top this one.

I don't believe Mobile, AL has any ice at the moment - the Civic Center was demolished in 2024 and the replacement facility won't be finished until sometime in 2027.

Providence, RI - The Amp/Dunkin Donuts Center/Providence Civic Center has hosted Nationals before. The Convention Center next door could serve as a secondary arena. Brown & PC both have on-campus arenas. Best of all, would be a local event for me 🙂.
And Providence has good restaurants, particularly Italian ones.

I would love for Skate America to be in Norwood, MA again!

Would it work for the T-Mobile Arena be the primary arena and the Orleans the secondary?
