Once a plane reaches a specific speed for that model/configuration, takeoff is the only option. Additionally, this aircraft was likely at close to max weight given that it was headed for Hawaii, and there are bunches of warehouses right at the end of the runway. A different video shows where the plane (possibly the landing gear?) ripped a trench in the roof of one of the warehouses.

Thanks for the information. Imagine being the crew, likely knowing your (basically non-existent) chances of a successful turn around with the amount of fuel they had on board.

What a horrible accident. I wonder what the cause will be determined to be. It is fortunate that more people on the ground were not hurt or killed.

NTSB is saying that they have video footage showing that one engine detached while the plane was on the runway.

Louisville native here. My son is an EMT in Louisville. He said he’ll never get the images out of his head.

Watched cnn today. They said the plane was manufactured in 1991.

The engine fell off after take off and a wing caught fire before the crash.

I can't bring myself to look. MD11's always have the most intense crashes. Thank goodness no passenger airlines have flown them for years. So sorry for this flight crew and the workers down below who lost their lives, and my thoughts go out to all witnesses and first responders...
