Louisville Airplane Crash

Saw a photo on r/aviation that shows an engine lying on the runway. AA191 vibes

Ok found it. Engine lying beside runway 17r

Engine

This site features a video that seems to have been taken by an airport worker. It shows one engine on fire during take-off while the plane was still on the runway. You can see it explode shortly after. :( I wonder why they didn't abort the landing.
Once a plane reaches a specific speed for that model/configuration, takeoff is the only option. Additionally, this aircraft was likely at close to max weight given that it was headed for Hawaii, and there are bunches of warehouses right at the end of the runway. A different video shows where the plane (possibly the landing gear?) ripped a trench in the roof of one of the warehouses.

Very sad.

Thanks for the information. Imagine being the crew, likely knowing your (basically non-existent) chances of a successful turn around with the amount of fuel they had on board. :fragile:

Watched cnn today. They said the plane was manufactured in 1991.

The engine fell off after take off and a wing caught fire before the crash.

I can't bring myself to look. MD11's always have the most intense crashes. Thank goodness no passenger airlines have flown them for years. So sorry for this flight crew and the workers down below who lost their lives, and my thoughts go out to all witnesses and first responders...

Yes MD11s don't have th3 best history and according to pilots are "unforgiving" while flying

My host mom's nephew (from back when I was an exchange student) is a UPS pilot out of Louisville. Fortunately, he's safe but they couldn't reach the family all of Tuesday evening and had to wait until Wednesday morning to find out.

Apparently, the plane had just undergone extensive maintenance and only been back in service for about 70 hours of flight time. (Warning: link contains video from news cast which contains footage from the crash) https://www.wlwt.com/article/louisville-ups-plane-investigation-documents-crash/69280215

Perhaps all the videos will help investigators figure out what happened, but how awful for the families. It's going to be almost impossible for them to avoid seeing images of the crash.
