The rate of false negatives is far higher than the rate of false positives, especially with PCR swabs. You are more likely to get a real positive followed by a false negative than vice versa.

WHYWHYWHY can't I get that kind of result in my ED. :angryfire

    What is happening at work?

Last night I overheard some of our ED RNs talking about how the hospital system is paying RNs on the ********* floors $10-20/hr more for hazard pay depending on the unit. The ED RNs are excluded because "we don't take care of ********* patients". When they complained, they were told that they got free...

I’ve found there are very few orthopedic emergencies requiring an orthopod to appear in the ED especially after 4p or on the weekend/a holiday. Most fractures/reductions are perfectly capable of being handled by the ED doc but I’ve definitely had to stand my ground a couple of times. Myrtle...

It absolutely wasn’t. But we’re too busy and short staffed to have time for that kind of nonsense right now. Come in to cause a ruckus, I make sure you don’t have an emergent condition and byeeeee.

WTF. As an EM doc, there are a few situations where I'm ok with a patient not wearing a mask. Respiratory distress, vomiting, young children, demented or psychotic patients, etc. But if you come in with a possibly broken finger and refuse to comply with hospital policy meant to keep front...

There's a lot of denial in SC at the moment...... Saw Dear Evan Hansen last year and it was good! I had gotten tickets for Hamilton in Atlanta for May as a little get away with the boyfriend. Felt odd buying them 6 months in advance 4-5 months into the relationship and then the tickets got...

One of the Columbia news channels posted an article about 24 (I think?) cases in WV linked to Dirty Myrtle (which now seems more appropriate a nickname than ever!) and the comments section was all "How do they know it was the beach? Could have gotten it at a gas station on the way!" Yea...

Some Disney cast members are starting a petition to stop reopening so we’ll see. There will definitely be people taking a “souvenir” home to their local communities. This. There’s major ********* fatigue. It’s understandable but I went grocery shopping today and I was one of few people wearing...

The flu swabs also have a similar false negative rate as the current plague's. It's highly likely that many of these people who felt miserable with flu-like illnesses late fall/winter pre-********* and tested negative for flu were false negatives. I remember seeing a mom and 3 kids who all had...

I find that the ear savers just add more pressure to the back of my head but the headbands with buttons work ok. I still have a headache from my hair being up in a tight bun by the end of the day regardless. My hair has gotten entirely too long so I'm resisting the urge to cut it myself. Got...

The “problem” is that social distancing worked so many areas “aren’t that bad” from the perspective of the average person which was the whole point of taking such drastic measures to begin with.

I've been away from FSU for a couple of days but glad to hear @Kasey , @rfisher , @Marge_Simpson are hanging in there. Marge, NYC sounds like a disaster. Thanks for all you and your colleagues are doing. The exchange of information from hot spots on social media to help other places prepare...

    What is happening at work?

My niece is in K5 and a very good reader. She was watching her teacher and other E learning videos and decided to have her mom film her reading a book to her younger brother every day which goes on Facebook for her friends. She's calling it "Reading with Nora" and it's been one of the...

A small percentage (<5%) will have GI symptoms but I think it’s diarrhea more so than nausea/vomiting. Had a glorious night shift last night and saw 7 patients in 10 hours. Then I was notified my super sick patient from the night before was officially positive. I hope she does okay.
