Five 10s for Ilia in presentation? Judges 2, 4, 5, 6, 7.
 But, then, I heard it directly from the horse's mouth himself that he's the superstar of figure skating today. So, there's that.

If my father were still alive, he would tell Illia what he told me as a young girl, " If you are good enough at something, other people will blow your horn for you. You NEVER need to blow it yourself."

There's a couple hours until the free dance for you to continue to clutch your pearls.

Can we put the term "menning" to rest already? This was a great event.

These guys are out there attempting -- and often achieving -- some of the most difficult elements in sport. And when they are on, it's thrilling for all of us. They deserve our respect, not our derision.

I don’t know, if we can run ladiezzzzz into the ground, I’m going to support “menning” when deserved.

Oh, good Lord... FS fans really need to get over this demand they make of skaters for false humility. Plenty of people are out here blowing Ilia's horn about how good he is and who cares if he is willing to also say that out loud? He IS that damn good and bitching about him saying it sounds a lot like petty jealousy.

It wasn't a great answer, but the way the question was worded and the emotions of the moment probably combined to make it come out like that. (And a long habit of swagger, too. ) He did at least pivot quickly to appreciation and gratitude for the audience.

I used to dislike Scott Moir for talking like that. But he grew up a bit and seems to have turned out to be a good egg. So I give a little more leeway nowadays.

Per his Goldenskate interview, it seems like Kevin is continuing

No pearl-clutching going o here at all. Just a clear dislike of people who are really full of themselves.

But, to be fair, I don't know Ilia personally, so maybe in his daily life he isn't as egotistic a he "sometimes" sounds on camera. He's young, so I will cut him some slack, I guess.

Is he a phenomenal jumper? You betcha.

Now, if you want to witness pearl clutching ... or pure vitriol .... tune in for the free dance because it's guaranteed there will be no shortage of it directed at a particular couple there. And, for some of you, that will just be perfectly acceptable.

Poor Yuma all those silver medals at the Olympics and Worlds has any skater this good been so close but never won Gold at either event? His single Gold from a major championship is from 4CC.
So close how exactly? Yes, he's been the silver medalist at all of those major events but he's never been closer than 10 points to the winner, and most of the time he's been closer to 15+ points out of first - that's at least one decent quad off the leader.

2021 Worlds -
Chen - 320.88; Kagiyama 291.77; Hanyu - 289.18

2022 Olympics -
Chen - 332.60; Kagiyama - 310.50; Uno - 293.00

2022 Worlds -
Uno - 312.48; Kagiyama - 297.60; Zhou - 277.38

2024 Worlds -
Malinin - 333.76; Kagiyama - 309.65; Siao Him Fa - 284.39

2026 Olympics -
Shaidorov - 291.58; Kagiyama - 280.06; Sato - 274.90

2026 Worlds -
Malinin - 329.40; Kagiyama - 306.67; Sato - 288.54

“I definitely think so” replies Ilia….
Well in his defense, he isn’t just a skating superstar in his own mind. It’s not considered good form to call oneself a superstar, but he’s ready, willing and able. People who know nothing about skating know who he is. I have a friend I’ve known for 30 years who loves team sports like hockey, baseball, football, and she only watches hockey during the Olympics, never the individual sports. She knew who Kwan and Lipinski were, but since then, she doesn’t really know the names of current skaters. Only once in 30 years has she asked me if I have a certain skating program on tape. Not Kwan, not Hanyu or Chen, not Valieva- this was in 2024, and she wanted to see Ilia’s Free Skate from 2024 Worlds.

Sasha Cohen, Surya Bonaly, Nancy Kerrigan. But I think Yuma has them all beat.

Be careful what you wish for - if they don’t win this year the chances are they will come back next year with a programme using their own voiceovers. :saint:

Slam poetry is exactly what ice dance needs. Next RD theme? ;)

I liked their little Instagram video on Quebecois French v French French. It was the least offensive FB&C thing the algorithm showed me.

So he was asked a stupid question and answered it honestly? I mean, what would you rather he say? That no, he's not a figure skating star? He's just a rando they invited to skate and happened to accidentally win? 🤨

I am interested to read/hear Tony's take on this men's free skate. I am okay with super talented people also having noticeable egos. They certainly get their share of criticism so they better begin with a lot of self belief. I find false modesty - "who me" more annoying.

I'd have a problem with it if I heard they were rude or condescending to others. I have not heard that about Ilia. In fact just the opposite so he gets a pass from me. I still am confused on the scoring we saw while watching particular on the axle and on the combo with the euler.

Same.

I don't think some of the folks here are grasping just how much more well-known Ilia has become since the Olympics. No, he's not at Alysa levels of fame & social media following but he's absolutely emerged as the 2nd biggest figure skating star. Venture out onto the likes of X you'd see how his fanbase has grown & are jumping into rabidly defend him against the excessive critiques lobbed toward him by much of the existing FSTW fanbase.
