2026 Olympics Team Event - Strategy, Predictions & Discussion

I keep seeing things in the press and online that say more than two disciplines can be split. I'm sure they are up in the night.

However, it keeps the discussion muddled.

Yes, for the Team Event, any fed can split up to two disciplines if they have multiple entries in the individual disciplines.

Sorry, I mistyped. More than "two" disciplines. Some say they can split all four. Like I said - up in the night.

Fixed my original post.

Ahhh. No, they can't split all four. Some people would like that to change, but I think the rationale behind only being able to split 2 is to give countries with slightly less depth a fighting chance at medals & placements.

Not meaningless, but I'll bet Ilia would vastly prefer the individual gold. I'll bet most in his position would.
Of course, but this is Ilia who is nothing if not wildly ambitious. There's no way he's not imagining himself winning two gold medals at the Olympics. Very few have done so, I think just Volosozhar/Trankov, Virtue/Moir, and Nathan Chen.

At the same Olympics? Or multiple gold medals over 2+ Olympics?

Per Jackie on X: “Note: The US lineup for the Team Event will NOT be announced today. There is currently no date set for the team announcement.”
Not announced but I’m pretty certain, even before Alysa mentioned it, that they are meeting today to set it up. I was told a few nights prior by one of the officials.

The USFS isn't crazy enough to announce the TE lineup until much closer to the Games. The only reason we had some inkling of who was being used in 2022, IIRC, was because of when skaters arrived in Beijing. Due to the Covid restrictions, there were limited flights for Team USA and when it became clear that some skaters weren't arriving Beijing until the week the Games started, it was rather obvious they weren't doing the TE.

That won't be the case this year with many skaters probably electing to begin arriving in Italy the last week of this month and training in Bergamo. The Olympic colored time schedule has official training for the TE beginning on Sat, Jan 31st, so it may not be until then that we know for sure who is in and who is out.

Shouldn't the USFS keep its strategy relatively secret? Or will it be easy to discern anyway once it's clear which disciplines have substitutes?
Well, yes, but we may not know what their strategy is even once the official practices start on the 31st. The two disciplines they've decided to split will still be able to practice in Bergamo between the 31st and Feb 3rd when the the official individual event practices start and no one would be the wiser.

There are prior dates by which the Feds need to list anyone who might be appointed, and then, at least in the past, another date before the Olys in which the potential up-to-eight need to be submitted. I suspect the skaters/teams would be told before then if they aren't on the second list. I believe Weaver or Poje said that CAN chose to tell them they were out of the TE just before the Olympics, and it was not easy, and I'd think USFS would not want that to happen and would have everyone do the NDA thing.

I think there are very few decisions that will be made based on what another country will do for the SP and RD, except where there are two equal-for-their-strongest-program competitors -- ex: US Women, French Men, maybe ITA Men if they want to split and have Grassl do the FS -- but I don't see how that would impact USFS strategy on who skates the SP/RD. I think the only up-in-the-air selection worldwide for the RD is whether FB/C are in. Maybe they'll agree to do the FD, knowing the likelihood of qualifying is that much smaller if they don't skate the RD  because, unless Conti/Macii are too injured, FRA would likely need FB/C's RD score to qualify for the final.

The strategy is more whether Malinin and Chock/Bates would need to skate both, due to the odds at the time the decision needs to be made, and that might be known only after the RD/SP's shake out, plus the FD's for determining subs for the rest.

So I don't think USFS would be giving anything away if they announced the expected skaters for the SP/RD, with a possibility of up to two subs in the FD/FS. However, it would provide a mass of speculation and distraction, though, for all of the skaters except for Pairs, where they could only split if Men and Dance aren't.

Justin Dillon said that they are talking to the coaches, that they expect to decide "soon," but that they don't have to officially make their decision for weeks.

Also, the skaters can start training in Bergamo even before the official processing date. I think he said the 23rd or 24th. Some skaters might want to train at home as long as possible, but some may want to adjust to the time difference and get acclimated in Italy as soon as possible. And once a coach goes to Italy, I assume most of their skaters will as well. So, we won't necessarily know who USFS chose just by who is in Italy early.

From the Dec 10th ISU Communication - chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://isu-d8g8b4b7ece7aphs.a03.azurefd.net/isudamcontainer/CMS/Corporate-Site/Governance/Transparency/ISU-Communications/2754-OWG-2026-qualified-Teams-for-Team-event--1--1765525382-5185.pdf

NOCs with Teams who have qualified Skaters/Couples in an individual OWG competition/discipline (the "qualified Skaters/Couples" in Women Single Skating, Men Single Skating, Pair Skating, Ice Dance) and who have chosen to compete in the Team Event must list the respective qualified Skaters/Couples of such discipline also as entries for the Team Event and may not enter different Skaters/Couples for such discipline. The attached entry From should be sent on or before January 13, 2026 to the ISU Office.

Also, the same NOCs must have their Skaters competing in all the competitions/disciplines of the Team event for which they have entries in the individual OWG competition/discipline. This means that if for example an NOC has only one entry for a discipline/competition, this Skater or Couple may not choose to skate only the individual OWG competition and skip the Team Event competition.

And, further down...

I am assuming not announcing the team lineup means the skaters don't know either (which may not be the case in reality), but I think it's better not to announce it at this point. Doing so could impact skaters as they prep for the games. One skater might find out they're doing both segments and start to develop anxiety about it. Another might find out they wont be in the team event and feel discouraged which could affect their training. Someone could be assigned to the team and then develop an injury. It's better to make the final decisions closer to the event when they can see exactly how everyone is doing.

I would think the skaters would want to plan their schedules and training based on whether they are taking part and to prepare mentally. I think most of the skaters already know, though. It's really the second dance team and the women up in the air. If Ilia has chosen to split, I'm sure he's told the other guys.

I vote for no public announcement but telling the skaters as soon as a decision is made so they can figure out their training regimen and try to peak appropriately. In addition, some might want to strategize with their coaches about program tweaks for the team event, perhaps leaving out a risky element.
