Russian figure skating news in 2024

Her eyes were permanently damaged when her husband showed her the birth video.
Thanks. Now images of the dancing dwarf will haunt my dreams tonight.

There was a figure skating standard for female ice dancers when she was competing and it wasn't held only by Russians. Her coaches in Russia and France, mother and frankly the judges all held the same views about lines and the woman's aesthetics. If you wanted to win, and that is clear that winning was the objective, that's the look that would get you there. It's not really changed that much, TBH. But, it was clear from the interview, she still has a POV the other two didn't hold.

Gotta love 'they', 'these russians'. Its Anissina and technically she is a French skater. Skoptsova and Medvedeva did not agree with her on the weight issue at no point
The fun part in your quote is that is technically a French skater whereas when you read the article, Anissina just keeps talking about how Russian she is and how the French system was bad and that she had to bring some Russian touch to their training. Anissina is a Russian wolf in a French sheep’s clothing…

I guess some have forgotten Zhulin and Averbukh saying Hawayek was too fat and needed to lose weight. Eteri’s “one gram of fat is one gram of laziness.” Bobrova and Khuda saying no one obsesses about weight anymore except Russians. Tarasova calling Radio and Gracie fat. The examples are endless and the testimony from Russian skaters themselves, including reliable, serious girls like Scherbakova etc leave no room for doubt.

Obviously I didn't bother reading the article.
However, Anisina does not say the French system was bad, she says it was different and both her and Piezerat had to adjust. She had to learn contemporary dance which she had never been exposed to before, he had to learn the basics of the classical dance, which he had never been exposed to before.

Russian coaches are afraid of change and reform. CoP system is like a monster to them as it has exposed the weaknesses of their skaters, especially the women.
Yes, these weak Russian women who did not win the last 3 Olympics.

I think the Russian coaches are not afraid, they are just lazy. Every time there is a chance in the rules it is first greeted with a mass moan, then several season of not actually bothering to read these rules and complaining how their skaters are underscored and only then after being kicked several times finally eventually may be somehow reading the rules. Moskvina is an exception of course.

Men and women all over the world are drooling over Laurence. She is a drop-dead gorgeous athlete. A great fitness role model for younger atlhetes. She has the confidence to show her six pack abs or gorgeous legs in these outfits. Some people in fashion or artistic sports keep promoting women with no leg muscles, hips, or abs, asking women to look like their pre-teen bodies. It's as if muscles made them feel so insecure.

I think the Russians are just jealous that their Ice Dance dynasty ended after 2006 and they haven't been all that relevant in Ice Dance since then except for a few medals here and there but nothing like the 80's 0r 90's. It must kill them to see North America be where the power in Ice Dance has been for over 15 years now. It must have killed them when they last hosted Worlds when the 3 teams on the podium in Ice Dance were all North American teams. It was glorious. 😆

Hm... I somehow assumed figure skating was an individual sport and who cares if Uno is Japanese, Virtue/Moir are Canadians and Kostner is an Italian. Apparently we've been watching a different sport.

Of whom, one at least shouldn't have (2014), one won from one of the most forgettable and pointless fields (2018), and one did so jumping 'quads' that were never quads (2022).

None of these women was better than the non-Russian skaters they beat, apart from Zagitova on that particular night. All of them had the judges on their side who inflated their scores far too much, with 2022 especially you can reshuffle the top 3 in any order and make it make sense (and Valieva should have been hammered out of the top 6 after that free skate).

Not that you're wrong about the point you're making there, because none of this is relevant to how they're judged.

I think you think way too much about what Russians hated and thought 15 years ago

Btw, I don't know any other recent ice dance team that an average Russian skating fan loved more than Virtue/Moir.

False. There was I/k and then world champs s/k so you are wrong

2014- I agree somewhat, but I blame the COP rules for that. Kim left the door slightly open, and the home ice advantage won.

2018 - “forgettable and pointless field”? It had some of the most beloved skaters on fsu - Japanese (medal winners in world and future Olympics), Canadian, (world champion in the same year)and like her or not, Medvedeva (2 times world champion) was one of the strongest contenders. Zagitova had dominated the entire season - great tech abilities- though I was not her fan. Just like in the men’s field, technical content and consistency result in high PCS (though Medvedeva deserved hers). I don’t hear complaints about Nathan Chen’s wins. Oh, I forgot- he is not Russian.

2022- Completely wrong. The quad queen did not win the gold. Scherbakova who was artistic, won with just one quad. She was the most complete skater, with nerves of steel. Trusova didn’t have the artistry but I respected her ability and guts to go for 5 quads. I used to respect Midori Ito for the same reason. Only one of Sasha’s quads was ur and one had a clear mistake. It was the most difficult content by a woman. I applaud her. Many men would be proud of a performance like hers.

I get it that you hate Russians, but at least face the facts that the Russians women delivered difficult programs while the rest did not. In 2018 and 2022 they totally deserved to win in very strong fields.

I’m very happy for him!!!

Gumenik skating onegin in Beijing

Minus drug use...results could have been very different.
My thoughts exactly. Unfortunately, many of the Russian skaters who 'won' events, even at the Junior levels, will always have an asterisk next to their names as far as I'm concerned due to not just one, but multiple doping scandals in the Russian program. And it came to light long before the unfortunate Valieva was singled out. I will always be suspicious of how their girls learned their quad jumps, especially under a certain coaching team. 😒
