2026 Euros in Sheffield GBR planning thread

Do not stay at the ibis. It’s awful and more like a one-star hotel. I’ve stayed at many ibis hotels throughout the years, and this one was both the worst and the most expensive. For anyone wary about the tram, it’s fine - or Ubers are plenty and cheap. Far better to stay in the centre than at the ibis. Can’t speak to the Premier Inn.

It’s a visa waiver similar to a U.S. ESTA or other travel preauthorisation. Easy, cheap, and done online.
Thank you for the warning. I definitely will not be staying at the Ibis!

I get why they're doing this, but I kind of hate it. I didn't go to their tour because I'm saving to get Euros tickets. As always, gotta spend money to save money!

The competition schedule has now been published:

Single day tickets go on sale next Thursday, 26 June.

Just to say that I hate this whole “on sale at 10am” thing - for those of us who work 9-5 jobs this is frankly a real pain. At least if they were on sale at 9am the day is just beginning. All my meetings start at 10 and I just know I won’t get the tickets I want ☹️.

Just booked for the Friday so hope to see some of you there :)
I have got to decide on flights. What’s most likely to cause problems in January? Transferring in Reykjavik, Dublin, or biting the bullet and flying direct to one of the London area airports?

Dublin should be absolutely fine I think? @allezfred would have more experience but I'm just across the water and people here use it all the time with no issues.

You will need to clear immigration and re-clear security in Dublin. Probably change terminals as well, though they are close together at least. Budget for extra time. There is theoretically a transfer area within Dublin airport, but I’ve never seen it open and never heard of anyone using it. Your second flight will be like a completely disconnected flight, though at least your connection is protected if it’s on the same booking.

The plus is that you will land as a domestic passenger in the UK - though increasingly there are informal checks where people have to show their passport to prove that they don’t have to show their passport 🙃

If you’re going back through Dublin, the same difficulties will apply to the connection - Ireland implements passport control on flights from the UK even though the UK does not on flights from Ireland - but you will likely be able to pre-clear US Customs and Immigration in Dublin.

All else being equal, I’d lean toward Reykjavik over Dublin, since it has an isolated non-Schengen area. Connections should be quick and easy. Then you’ll clear immigration in the UK.

My situation is different because I’m coming from St. Louis but I’m just flying into Heathrow, staying one night in London and then taking the train up to Sheffield. I’m leaving for the US via Manchester, but I have family there and it seemed a lot easier to do it that way.

I highly recommend any European or England flights via Dublin if you have to transfer? Dublin airport is amazing, the staff are nice. Avoid Manchester at all costs especially departing, it's hell. I try as much as I can to avoid it like the plague. Actually Reykjavik is great too - we did that on our way back from the GP final last year in France.
