Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

I never even knew this was a thing. I just went through all the comments. Why are so many people up in arms over this? So many people saying they r not gonna go see it. The only reason why I’m apprehensive is because it looks like yet another musical. Lol I cannot even finish Amelia Perez, because of the ridiculous nonsense singing. I thought that was going to be a serious movie.

A lot of the ruckus is over how awful the CGI is in a lot of these live action films. It was my main problem with the Little Mermaid remake. The visuals where just hideous looking, IMHO.

And some of the reactions are based on how Rachel Zegler has talked about how she wants the Snow White story to be told. Many people have found her remarks to be odd and out of place.

The more I think about what I watched when I saw Emilia Pérez, the clunkier I find the whole thing. And the musical part really didn't work at all, IMHO.

Snow White is a story I really hate so I wouldn't watch this remake even if it was a lot better than is looks like it will be. But if I loved the story, I would be super disappointed. Well, except for the fact that I've given up on Disney "live" action remakes after Beauty & the Beast.

AFI Awards Top 10 Honorees for 2024

AFI MOTION PICTURES OF THE YEAR
Anora
The Brutalist
A Complete Unknown
Conclave
Dune: Part Two
Emilia Pérez
Nickel Boys
A Real Pain
Sing Sing
Wicked

Yep, I think that's pretty much going to be the ten nominees for Best Picture at the Oscars. I have wondered about The Substance, but I haven't seen it yet on Amazon Prime and I'm not sure which movie would be dropped for it.

No substance? I will abort the Oscars if so. Emilia Perez put me to sleep in 20 minutes and I don’t take that movie seriously. Was it a musical? Something to be considered seriously? Satire? Who knows. Sorry, but Dune part two and wicked are like summer versions of avengers and Star Wars types of cinema. if they can’t nominate something like the substance, I don’t care about movies that are mass produced for the masses. I like strong storytelling, not CGI. Sorry to be so harsh but that’s how I feel. Also, Anora is a huge pass from me as well. If Demi Moore gets overlooked in the actress category, I just don’t take these things seriously anymore.

I think Dune: Part 2 deserves to be on the list. The production, cinematography, and visual effects were superb. I think Villeneuve did a really good job with the directing and script. And I sometimes think that if Dune had come out in December 2023 as originally planned, Austin Butler would (or should) have been in that Best Supporting Actor nomination conversation. He played the psychopath very well, IMHO.

Honestly, I think Emilia Pérez is the film for this year that the critics like and the rest of us……just don’t. It’ll probably win Best Foreign Language Film and Best Song (because that category is embarrassingly weak this year). There is a film from Germany 🇩🇪, The Seed of the Sacred Fig (Persian), that might overtake Emilia Pérez. I’ve seen rave reviews on the festival circuit, but it doesn’t have Netflix-level backing. SIGH. 😔

The Golden Globes nominations will be announced on Monday morning. That’ll be more telling than anything else so far. As soon as I see a link to a live feed, I’ll post it in the Awards thread. 😃

Did you rent The Subtance? I think I’ll see it this weekend.

I love that type of storytelling. I appreciate a woman’s point of view and direction from a woman and I’m so excited to see Gia Coppola’s film the last showgirl. I don’t know why but I gravitate toward women’s versions of storytelling versus men’s.

I don’t want guns, explosions, and CGI, I want intricate writing that evoke emotions.

Also, if a movie or story is a love story / cinderella story like Anora is it has to take me someplace I haven’t been to. This is why I just can’t imagine this getting an Oscar nomination over the substance.

The biggest barrier The Substance has is it's genre. The Academy isn't big on horror. People still talk about Toni Collette being snubbed for Hereditary. I personally can't do horror but I would like to see it break into the conversation more than it has when it comes to award shows outside of the ones known for rewarding sci-fi and horror things.

The second biggest barrier The Substance has is it's distributor. I'm glad Mubi is putting a lot of effort into this, but it is their first serious awards run.

I disagree strongly about Dune Part 2. It is nothing like a Marvel/Star Wars type of movie for the masses, despite its strong showing at the box office. Denis Villeneuve put together a masterpiece, IMO. It was better than Part 1.

OK, so Demi Moore and the substance got in for nominations for the independent spirit film awards… here watching the nominations that came out earlier this morning. So happy for both of these

Although not for Director.

How long does it take airlines to get new releases these days? Am travelling to Japan at the end of December, but thinking that might be too early for "Wicked" to be on the inflight entertainment system....

Oh and because it needs to be said the definitive version of "Defying Gravity" is still by Lea Michele and Chris Colfer on Glee. ;)
We got Beetlejuice and It Ends with Us on 12/3, so no chance for Wicked by EOM.

Makes sense. Both of those movies are available to rent for $5.99 on Amazon Prime and Netflix (and least in the 🇺🇸) will have It Ends With Us available on Monday.

I don’t see even Amazon Prime having Wicked available to rent by even March, unless it’s for the $19.99 rate.

I saw Conclave and really enjoyed it. Ralph Fiennes was excellent as was whole cast, especially John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini. Some interesting twist and turns keep you wondering who will be the next pope.

Yes. The ending was worth the slow burn. About an hour into the film I was just like oh just pick somebody already. Lol. but it was a very creative ending and that’s what I like, clever writing.

I figured out who was going to be pope after the first vote. Which never happens with me!

But how… I don’t want to include a spoiler here, but we weren’t

I deleted the rest of the sentence. I don’t want to include anything that could be a spoiler.
The second that the eventual winner received one vote it popped into my head that this would be the Cinderella story of a papal election. Each successive vote he got more - I knew I was right.

I’ve posted my thoughts in the Awards thread, but it’s obvious that so many supposed favorites were hurt by their limited releases. It has been insane this year. I live in a decent metro area (DC) and it’s been unbelievably hard to find some of these movies. Some never made it to my area at all.

I don’t know why so many of the production companies did this, especially when many of these movies had such low budgets. 🫤

The original songs in movies were a dud this year, IMHO. 🥱 I guess we had been spoiled so far this decade.

I know I was in the Connecticut/New York area in October November, when the substance was out and was so hard to find it even there, but I could find Beetlejuice Beetlejuice on 15,000 screens.
