Hurricane Helene & Hurricane Milton

This is one the live stream on YT from WFLA News 8 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33hFw8bjCuk

Pretty interesting coverage from this team - they have a storm chaser up in Cedar Key. Right now it looks like the track has nudged to the east a little bit and is probably going to come onshore in the same area or somewhat north of where Idalia did last year.

Good luck to everyone in the path of this hurricane! And anyone who might experience excessive rainfall--take care!

Helene is going to help with our rainfall deficit in the Blue Ridge but I'm getting worried about flooding though the storm turns west before it heads north so we won't get the worst of it by any means.

It looks like the rainfall totals in western NC and northeastern GA are going to be pretty substantial. Hopefully there won't be too much flooding.

It does seem like Helene isn't strengthening as much as had been forecast yesterday, plus she's moving fast, so those are positive things.

My sister lives in New Smyrna Beach. My brother bought a home in DeLand, a bit west of her, but he is finishing up work in California and doesn't yet live there. I also have a SIL in Tampa and a friend just south of St. Petersburg. I don't know anything about their insurance situation, but I'm guessing it will likely change after this hurricane -- I can't believe the size of this storm.

My primary residence is in Polk County, 65 miles from coast, and in a no-flood zone. I have never filed a claim. Despite this, my homeowners insurance has gone up 250% in last three years.

My cousin lives in Panama City. I hope she and her husband will be ok. Wishing the best for all my friends who are in the path of this storm.

Some friends of mine have an aunt who refused to evacuate. An update this afternoon predicted 20 foot waves for her area. She decided to leave after that but her cat hid so she stayed. They are very worried for her safety.

I have a friend in New Smyrna Beach. They can no longer get homeowner's insurance

My cousin lost his condo to the hurricane that hit Naples a few years ago. No insurance.

Everyone’s has gone up, what with the wildfires and tornadoes and hurricanes. Maybe not that much, but nationally there have been increases. Mine went up about 11%, also with no claims and located in a state with few national disasters.

I’m so worried about my friends in Brevard NC. The Weather Channel reports are dire and there are a lot of streams and creeks near them.

My company has an office in Tallahassee. Everyone is evacuated, no one has power, but the building is intact. Other sites in the southeast are closed today...no power and flood potential. I just finished writing an internal announcement.

I hope @thvu and all other FSUers in the path of the storm are safe.

My husband has a gamer friend from Pensacola, the one we drove to visit this past summer. I unfortunately didn't get to see much of the area due to being stuck in our hotel room having a major gastritis attack the entire time. He hasn't had any contact with them for the past 72 hours or so, I just hope that means the whole family got out and they're just busy wrangling kids and whatnot.

I just did a twitter search and this was posted 14 min: Fortunately, Brevard County is reporting no significant damage from Hurricane Helene. Thursday, as rough as the water was at the @cbpier, I was still surprised not to find any surfers. We found some young, daring skimboarders instead. @MattNews6 doesn’t recommend.

I copied the tweet.

Hope that helps.

Your sister may have heard of my friend. She's the town's archaeologist and has been doing a number of digs around the area.

Friends' aunt made it through the storm safely and didn't even lose power. They lost theirs, though, and have branches down but no trees.

Other friends are gradually checking in. No word from cousin in Panama City or friends in Asheville and Tallahassee.

Heartbreaking to see the death toll rise and all the destruction. Huge admiration for all the government and utility workers, first responders, and regular folks who've been working like fiends to help as many as they can.

My friends in Redington Beach and Holmes Beach (barrier islands to the west/south of Tampa) have not yet been allowed to return to their homes. The videos that I've seen online show a lot of damage from the storm surge pushed over those low-lying islands. They dutifully pay the very high hurricane and flood insurance premiums, but they are now wondering 1) if their claims will be paid like they expect/hope, and 2) if their insurance will be renewed.
