U.S. Men 2024-25 news & updates

It’s so disappointing that neither Naumov or Torgashev have been able to find consistency in their competitive skating, because if they did, they would be right at the top and super competitive. They are the Roman Sadovsky’s of the U.S. But every year I’m hopeful that may change.

I know except for Torgy surprise silver US medal what two years ago? Neither one of them have produced on the senior scene. I’m waiting for Jacob and Patrick to move up.

Someone needs to tell him to not worry about a Jr title. Get up to seniors and position himself to be in the mix for the 4CCS team and more team envelope funding and senior assignments next season when the Olympics are here. I don't think he has a quad yet but he's more than capable, if he goes clean, of beating all these senior guys who have 1 semi-reliable quad that, more often than not, they fall on or pop into a double during one or both programs of any given competition. He is more than capable, with the tech he has, to earn the Worlds CTES min at one of the November Challengers - Tallinn Trophy or Warsaw Cup, please.
 
I don't think it's a bad thing to wait until you're comfortable to move up to Senior in men's - if you can swing it funding-wise.

Senior is a huge step up for pressure, competition, and spotlight. We've seen guys move up too early and fall flat on their face. We've seen ladies move up, be called the next big thing, and retire. We've seen many skaters push hard to move up too soon and get injured quickly.

The other aspect is judging. Build a solid reputation with the judges at Junior and you'll have a leg up in Senior regardless of your jumps. It's a great strategy for success if you aren't one of the quad prodigy types. The talented men who use this strategy (Jason, Dennis, etc) may not be podium contenders at Worlds/the Olympics, but they're usually Top 10 or near it when they hit and are always threats for a GP medal.

Jacob is 17 and is not a prodigy on the level of Vincent, Nathan, or Ilia. He's great, but he's taking things slowly - and that may be the best path for him as the field stands right now.

She brought the goods and look great, completely different than last season. And I think she scored a point higher in total than Amber. So yes. Bring her to skate America, I have a feeling she’s going to win it.

Theoretically, sure, but with only 2 spots, I'm not sure he'd really be under consideration for a Jr Worlds assignment given how high Patrick & Jacob are scoring already this season. They both gave away points in their first JGPs and can score much higher - especially Jacob, IMO. I feel much more confident about them placing high enough to earn more JGP spots next season and possibly re-earning a 3rd JWC spot for the men.

I'm a lot more concerned about our women, TBH.

Blackwell and Sanchez are doing well, but it wouldn’t hurt to have another good skater in the mix in case of a slump, injury, etc. I expect 2025 nationals results will factor heavily into selection, too. Does anyone know if the Junior selection camp is coming back?

I get where you're coming from.

Santa Claus Cup is the week after CoC and before the GPF, so if Lucas does wind up with a 2nd GP (he should) then that may be an option for an easy Jr comp. There are a handful of B comps in December around Europe that would also suffice - far enough after the GP to give him time to prep jr programs but far enough ahead of Nats to not affect prep for that.

I guess, from my POV, I think it is far more likely that Lucas will get sent to 4CCs rather than Jr Worlds and the USFS will run the risk of relying on Jacob/Patrick with Taira as the 1st Alternate.

4CCs - Feb 18-23
Jr Worlds - Feb 24-Mar 2
Worlds - Mar 24-30

How idiotic is it that someone like Broussard who scored over 85 in the SP and 160 in the LP at Cranberry a Senior B has to get technical minimums for a Junior event. I mean c'mon really those numbers are way over the Men's minimums for the ISU championships.

Since Lucas has a good chance of making Worlds this year, it seems to make more sense for him to focus on Senior programs, instead of having to "downgrade" and switch back. But I guess if he wants to redo his poor showing at JW and try to get a JW medal before he ages out, that could be cool too. Remember, even Nathan Chen never won JW.

I agree. If he moves up now every interview will be "when are you going to get a quad?" Every competition introduction will include a mention that he doesn`t have a quad. We`ve seen in the past what a burden that can be.
 
Let both Jacob and Patrick stay in juniors this year and compete against each other. Technically, Patrick has senior-level TES capability (he has quad salchow and quad loop on his Instagram), but he hasn't had a lot of recent domestic and international competition experience and he's not age-eligible yet. I agree that Jacob needs to progress technically at his own pace. They can both move up to seniors next year and challenge for a Worlds/Olympics spot.

Lucas is winning senior international Bs and will be skating at senior GPs. It will be weird to bring him back to Junior level whereas he could legitimately make senior Worlds this year.

^^^ Kirk Haugeto has shared a clip from the beginning of his new Junior SP to Benson Boone's "Beautiful Things" (reportedly he debuted the program at the Middle Atlantics NQS competition in NYC that he won earlier this month).
Alina Milevska is the choreographer - she's part of Team Raf in Irvine, CA.
