Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

Last night I went to a preview screening of Touch at the American Scandinavian Foundation here in NY. The Icelandic movie is opening in theaters in the US on Friday. It’s a second chance at love story about a man facing the possible end of his life and deciding to try to find the woman he loved who had vanished from his life with no warning 50 years previously. His search takes him from Iceland to London to Tokyo. My main quibble was my inability to understand a lot of the dialogue; there were subtitles, of course, for the Icelandic and Japanese, but a lot of the dialogue was in English and the actors were either too soft spoken or English wasn’t their first language. I’m interested to see what the reviews will be when the film opens.

If you like true stories, Sound of Hope tells a remarkable story about families in a very small community who adopted 77 unwanted children -the ones hard to find homes for - difficult children or 2-3 siblings kept together. It’s raw in places and doesn’t portray a fairy tale.

Teaser trailer - A Complete Unknown

So…..is this coming out this year to get Timothee Chalamet in for Best Actor at the next Oscars? That race already looks insane. Also, I don’t think it’s making the fall festival circuit (Telluride, Venice, etc.).

Unless I'm missing it, I don't see a premiere date on there. It just says "coming soon," which could mean anything. I'd be a little surprised if it is released before 2025, actually. Chalamet had another notable performance early this year that, to me, is worthy of an Oscar nom, if not the win. But then I think half the cast of Dune Part 2 deserves to be recognized. To me it was a phenomenal film. Gave me serious chills several times. I know, I'm a sci fi nerd. But I still thought the acting was top notch.

Hmm. I can see Chalamet getting a Best Actor Golden Globe nomination (like for Wonka) for Dune, but I don’t think he will get an Oscar nomination. Dune: Part 2 will and should in Oscar nominations for Picture, Director, and a bunch of the production categories and will likely win a few statues.

The chatter at the oscarrace subreddit and Variety’s early 2025 Oscar predictions aren’t mentioning any acting nods for Dune. But apparently, Joker: Folie à Deux, Emilia Pérez, Sing Sing, and Queer have gotten a lot of buzz.

I think what happens at the Venice Film Festival in September will be very telling.

Looks great. Ed Norton is channeling Pete Seegar, And Chalomet looks perfect in the Dylan role, and seems to have the voice for the singing part.

I was finally able to watch "The Duke" on Hulu. Helen Mirren and Jim Broadbent are a working class couple in early 1960's Britain. He's a dreamer and she is buttoned up and no nonsense. He has recently been released from a very short stint in jail when he wouldn't pay for a tv license. He is a bit of a social justice warrior who takes jobs as he can find them while she works as a maid. And he steals Goya's famous painting of the Duke of Wellington.
This is a drama with a double shot of comedy because of Jim Broadbent. It is also a touching film. Mirren is especially good. She sheds that tough exterior like the peel of an onion and we get a tender picture of this couple. This is a true story.

If you are going to see Deadpool and Wolverine I would highly recommend you avoid YouTube. I am going to see it today and trying real hard to avoid spoilers. LOL

I’m really keen on seeing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jm27YjLnPHc.

Alcohol is allowed to be bought in theatres now Ontario .. not sure of other provinces)m but I’ve always done the same thing. My theatre which technically I can walk to if I wanted ..https://www.landmarkcinemas.com/food-drink/alcohol-service/ but I always get the same thing though .. popcorn with lots of butter and a Diet Coke . The same for me since I was a kid lol.

I like that alcohol is allowed although I don’t drink because it means no noisy, seat kicking kids! I doubt the buckets are available here. :wuzrobbed

I have had that happen a long time ago and turned around and told them to stop lol. Maybe it was a skating competition?
Anyways personally I’m terrified of tornados .. which is becoming more common here unfortunately. However, it’s a movie and not real lol. I think all our older theatres are closed down now and the majority have the https://www.landmarkcinemas.com/experiences/recliner-seats/. I remember going with my friend and we had to figure out how to make it recline lol. Less seat kicking anyways.
