Let's Talk Movies #36 - 2020 - Yep it is a new decade

I adored Spaceballs. But I'm not really on board with this. For one thing, two of the actors in supporting roles have passed on (John Candy and Joan Rivers). Any replacements in those roles would be subpar, IMO. Even though they were smaller parts, Barf and Dot were unique and memorable. If they were going to make a sequel, they should have done it sooner. It's been almost 40 years.
There's no requirement for a sequel to have all the same characters though.

On my 11 hours flight back from London I watched two movies that I had seen in theatres.

'The theory of everything' and 'The Danish girl'. Eddie Redmayne was great in both, but even more so in 'theory'. He was totally a scientist, a disabled human, an inspiring person. I didn't know that Jane Hawking is still living (or isn't she?)

I enjoy watching movies after a long gap. They feel 'new' when I do that. Now I agree that Alicia Vikander was really a 'supporting' actress in the Danish girl. She deserved the Oscar she won that year. I remember reading about Gerda Weggener after I had seen the movie when it first came out. She had a tough life later. I read that she became destitute, after the war. It is hard to sell art even in good times.

The two movies had something in common. Wives who totally loved their husbands, in the most difficult situations.

I rarely watch movies when I fly. This time I just wanted to. So I split my time between the book and the movies.

Did Tina Turner do an Australian accent?
Not at all.

My only thing with AJT the character grew up in Australia and around people with Australian accents. Can understand if Charlize didn't have one to continue the character. But it really made no sense in the context.

We have some trailers for the holiday season! 😁

Heretic - Horror movie that starts with a couple of Mormon missionaries visiting Hugh Grant? Hmmm………🤔

Red One - The budget for this ended up being $250M. So Santa Claus (J.K. Simmons) gets kidnapped and it’s up to Dwayne (“The Rock”) Johnson and Chris Evans to rescue him? I’ll put this on my watchlist.

I watched Arthur the King while I was on my cruise, a movie adaptation of the book Arthur: the Dog who Crossed a Jungle to get a Home. Movie was cute, the book was really good.

Just saw Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 late this morning. Because we are still fairly early in its opening weekend, I will put my review in spoiler.

Overall, I give this movie an 8.5/10. I am a lifelong fan of Westerns and this was basically Western movie comfort food. If you aren't a fan of the genre, you probably won't like this. Also, Horizon is a multistory movie-series. You aren't quite sure yet how or if the three stories will end up tying together. It does feel a bit more like a TV show.

What's good: 1) The visual shots are gorgeous!!!, 2) Luke Wilson in a rugged look ☺️, 3) It didn't really feel like three hours, and 4) There's enough - especially with the teaser montage at the end - to entice you to probably want to go see Chapter 2 (Aug. 16).

What MEH: 1) Even for a Western, it was a tad too slow getting the storylines going. You don't even see Costner until an hour into the film, 2) So.....you see the Horizon "promise land" fliers that are in each storyline that are motivating them to find this "paradise", and it seems to be a conspiracy theory being pushed by this publisher? If so, what's behind that? It's introduced a little too confusingly, 3) There isn’t a definitive “end” - It just goes to the teaser montage, and 4) I'm also not 100% convinced that Costner is going to be able to really build this whole story through all four movies. We know Chapter 3 is filming right now and Chapter 2 comes out in August.

"Dumb Money" is a wild ride that shows how a bunch of regular people took on the big guys on Wall Street and won. It's based on the true story of the GameStop saga and has a great cast, including Seth Rogen, who brings his signature humor to the film. The movie's got a lot of heart and shows how even the little guys can make a big impact when they band together. It's not a perfect movie, but it's a lot of fun and will have you cheering for the underdogs. Seth Rogen's character adds a lot of comedic relief, and his presence helps make the film more enjoyable. Overall, "Dumb Money" is a great choice if you're looking for a entertaining and inspiring true story.

Just got back home from watching MaXXXine. Because we are still in its opening weekend, I will put my review in spoiler.

My overall rating for MaXXXine is 8.6/10. I will admit that slasher/horror films are usually a hit or miss for me. But this was pretty good!

As the title and previews suggest, this movie is rated R. And IMHO, it's definitely for adults - there's a couple of explicit shots, a bit of sexual references, and a lot of gore. There were a couple of teenagers in my viewing and I was :shuffle: for them.

The movie opens up with a video of a little girl (Maxine) talking to her father in what appears to be a church environment about "becoming a star". Fast forward to 1985 in Hollywood and we see Maxine auditioning for a horror movie (The Puritan II) for her big break. She gets the role, but the problem is that she's been working in the adult industry in films and dancing. This is happening in the backdrop of the rampage of The Night Stalker and its possible connection to the "sinfulness of Hollywood". Maxine gets a stalker, those close to her start to get brutally murdered, and there are satanic symbols left with their bodies. I won't spoil how everything ends, but it was a very interesting twist. And the final shot between Maxine and her stalker leaves you with .

If you have nostalgia for the 1980s slasher films, you will enjoy this movie. Mia Goth is great actress and the supporting cast (in particular - Elizabeth Debicki as the film's director, Kevin Bacon as a private investigator, and Michelle Monaghan as a detective) did a terrific job of executing their performances without overpowering Goth because they are more established in their careers.

I just watched Hit Man on Netflix and that was one of the most fun movies I have seen! in that it was a totally unexpected story since I knew nothing about it going in. I went and found the article from 2001 about Gary Johson and that was interesting as well.

King On Screen is an informative tribute to the various books written by Steven King that have made it onto the big screen. It is a nice walk through with praise and commentary on some of his most notable works including: Misery, Pet Sematary, The Shining, Shawshank Redemption, Carrie, It and more.. The film also features Steven King himself, visiting movie sets and appearing on talk shows, adding a personal touch to the experience.

Watching the film has reignited an interest in reading Steven King novels, and I recently purchased his latest, “Fairy Tale”. So far it is proving to be a serious page turner that I’d highly recommend to any fiction fan, hoping it might get the movie treatment someday.

And…..now we’re starting to get teaser trailers for Summer 2025!

F1 Teaser Trailer - So……Joseph Kosinski is going to do with Formula 1 racing cars what he did with U.S. Navy fighter jets in Top Gun: Maverick? And we’ll have it with…….Brad Pitt? 🤔

It's coming out in theaters the same day as Wicked. There have been a few stories about the hope that the movie duo will be the new "Barbenheimer." We shall see. To me that was a unique phenomenon.

November 22? Is it smart to do this the week before Thanksgiving?

Hmm….interesting. And Wicked had a $145M budget and Gladiator II (BTW, I wasn’t aware of any demand for a sequel. The 2000 film ended fairly perfectly, IMHO) had a budget of $250-310M. Wouldn’t Thanksgiving weekend be better $$$$ for opening? 🤔

The oscarrace subreddit is already giving TONS of buzz about Denzel Washington getting an Oscar nomination for Gladiator II.

It's another week to build up word of mouth before the big film weekend?
