2024 Athletics Thread - Road to Paris

I mean I feel horrible for Mu (it was hard to watch her crying as she walked off), but to kick out another member who had made the top 3 would have been really cruel too.

It's just another of a long string of examples where you criticize the US and imply that the process isn't working to produce the best (in your view) results.
I didn’t imply anything. I said what happened to Athing Mu, a young Olympic and World champion who would be a strong gold medal threat, is the reason why most countries don’t base their selections solely on a Top 3 finish at nationals. You are the one interpreting the above as a slight for some reason best known to yourself. This is about you and whatever chip on the shoulder you have when it is explained to you that people in other countries do things differently. Not me. You.

Well she's gorgeous and talented and very young (only 22). I have a feeling this won't be the last we see of her by any means. And isn't she already expanding to run the 1500 as well?

she's had a pretty decent 400 time too in the past (I know she ran the relay in the Olympics), although that's a pretty competitive event. I think she can definitely come back from this stronger even if it probably really stings in this moment.

I will disagree slightly on this - the U.S. dominates overall, but it can be very different with each event. But you could make a really good argument that the “cutthroat” nature of U.S. track & field (as well as in swimming) is why the U.S. does as well as it does overall. If you can survive U.S. Nationals/Trials, then you should have more confidence at Worlds or the Olympics.
Exactly just look at the swimming trials where some events let home 3rd and even 4th place swimmers who could have medaled in Paris or women's gymnastics in the last 12 years.

Track & Field is back in Eugene! ?

So…..basically everyone in the men’s 800 who didn’t finish dead last in their heat advanced to the semifinals. ?

Men’s 110m hurdles semifinals! Grant Holloway did 12.97. He can break the world record can he? But what can he possibly clean up? ?

Women’s 1500m Round 1: I’m calling it right now: It wouldn’t surprise me if all three women that made this team were from New Balance. Maybe Elise Cranny (Nike) can get in there.

All right, I also have the debate up on my laptop. ? ?

Um, 200m folks know they are ALL going through, right? I hope that McKenzie Long (Ole Miss, now running in adidas) makes this team.

Rai Benjamin was just jogging through that heat lol

He should be doing that. It’s top five in each heat + next 2 fastest. And there’s a decent number of DNSs.
oh I know he was fine it was just funny to me to see people sweating it behind him and he's just barely going

So I thought the deal with athletics is that you either run the fastest, jump the longest or highest, or throw something the longest. Or some combination of those things.

I didn't realize it is the winners of a beauty contest :swoon:
