Valieva Banned for Four Years, Effective December 25, 2021

For the CAS ruling that suspends Valieva for 4 years they only have 30 days to file an appeal under strict procedural grounds only.

The ISU distribution of medals can be appealed under separate application to CAS which both Canada and Russia are doing.
But if Russia can appeal the suspension, and the suspension is tossed out entirely or was changed to only go through Europeans, then there would be no medal re-distribution. So until that period is over, it would be premature to distribute the medals.

I believe they don't need to because those aren't ISU events.
I thought Kostner was banned from competing in domestic events during her suspension, but I could be mis-remembering it.

It may have been already said in previous pages. I skimmed through them but I may missed it.

Is it known who within ISU is the responsible for producing new rankings?
ISU Council meets next week, so it isn't them.
The ISU President? The new Director General?
Sports Technical Director for Figure Skating position is vacant, so it can't be that one.

Yeah I don’t think the medals will be given out before the appeals period is over (just in case) but they probably also know the that there most likely won’t be an appeal because there is no grounds for one.

Maybe this has been mentioned already and I missed it, but since the gold and silver medal results are not being disputed, could those be handed out even if the bronze placement is under appeal?

I don't remember which article or video I watched but I did get the impression that they would go ahead with gold/silver and hold off on bronze until all appeals are concluded.

The Italian Olympic Committee's anti-doping prosecutor had originally recommended that Kostner be banned for four years and three months for helping Schwazer evade a test and other infractions.

Jessica Calalang did not compete in domestic events while suspended, did she?
No, but she was suspended by USADA, which carried over to int'l events b/c USADA follows the rules. She/Brian also had their USFS funding suspended. I suspect that a ban by an int'l governing body (ISU) only applies to their events but I also suspect that nat'l governing bodies and anti-doping agencies are required to uphold those bans for their events.

But we all know Russia doesn't follow the rules and they are banned anyway b/c of the Ukraine invasion, so they'll have no problem effectively giving the finger to the ISU and letting Valieva compete in domestic events.

This is my understanding of how it works:

Some events are "sanctioned" and if they are sanctioned, the governing body has rules for who can take part. If an event isn't sanctioned, then the organizers determine eligibility. The ISU sanctions events and local NGB (RSSF in this case) sanctions events.

There is no reason for the domestic Russian events to be sanctioned by RSSF and I believe RSSF is suspended by the ISU due to invading Ukraine so are they even RSSF right now? Not sure about that. But all they have to do is say that the events aren't sanctioned by RSSF. They are domestic events that don't have to be sanctioned.

ETA any event sanctioned by an NGB has to follow certain rules from the ISU. So anyone banned by the ISU couldn't take place in an event sanctioned by an NGB. So that's probably why Caro couldn't take part. It's different because Italy wasn't suspended or anything.

The problem as I see it, and as I referenced the team document a few pages back, is that the ISU did not clarify how this situation would work. For those of you saying 'well when there aren't rules for this case, it needs to just default to how it works elsewhere', I don't agree.

I'm not siding with Russia at all, but this is another ISU issue of not covering all their bases on top of putting together horribly worded officially 'binding' documents. There's no mentioning of disqualification and if it should be singular or for the complete team, either. As I brought up a few days ago, the main point that every single outlet including Skate Canada should be bringing up is the fact that there were 25 women qualified to the free skate in Beijing in the event that Valieva would eventually be disqualified, as to not take away a spot from anyone else. I haven't seen anyone else bring up this point as a stronger argument, even if we have to revert back to the poorly-worded/formulated rules for this unique team event.

As you can see here: https://results.isu.org/results/season2122/owg2022/CAT002RS.htm
There is a * note of the results being provisional. Everyone is going to move up from 5th to 25th place because of rules that are specifically written for individual competition.

This falls on the hands of the ISU yet again, and Russia may very well have an argument that there was no officially documented procedure in place for team-style competition. Therefore, who is to say what officially should have been the scoring outcome?

She wasn't suspended from competing in domestic events the past two years because the ruling didn't come until this week. She withdrew from the jump contest two weeks ago and I'm sure she won't be in the Spartakiad two weeks from now. She did appear at Nationals and came in 3rd. TBH, she's grown a lot and the likelihood of her making the team in 2026 is slim if she decides to continue to compete. That's been a big debate this past year on Russian forums. There are several skaters coming who are likely to get any spots Russia might have so most of you can take a deep breath. She really doesn't have to compete if she doesn't want to and the Federation really doesn't need her to compete. I suspect she won't as she has multiple modeling contracts, is doing some commentary for TV1, and shows, just like Shcherbakova. Trusova and Tuktamysheva.

We should start a protest by giving calculators to the ISU president. Hear me out!

The best protest I've ever seen took place at a high school graduation. Every graduate gave the hated vice principal a marble. At first, he smiled and even seemed appreciative. There were about 300 people in the class, so after a while he ran out of pockets. I had a bird's eye view as a band member.

Okay, fans need to make this happen in Montreal. And they need to be SAMSUNG calculators since the ISU President is a member of the family that owns Samsung.

Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov still identifying themselves as gold medalists of the team event in their Instagram bios. ?
