In Memoriam

British Vogue is reporting that Jane Birkin has died. They have a wonderful remembrance of her but I have not been able to put it here. The singer, actress, Francophile and style icon led an interesting life. And of course there are interesting notes about the Birkin Bag. RIP

If you haven't already, I recommend watching the 2020 Bruce Lee documentary "Be Water" - here's an article about the director:

ETA his daughter Shannon's & granddaughter's tribute video today: https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cu7J9xAvvd7/
There is no way to watch in in Germany (legally) for free, I'm afraid.
Will just watch some of his best scenes in his memory. As kids, we were obsessed with his movies and my brother was even wearing similar shoes all day long  and sported a similar haircut.

Tony Bennett has died at the age of 96

Gone but never forgotten! He was one of the greatest entertainers of all time!!! One of those people who you never think will ever die. Greatly missed already. R.I.P.

I just read through his performing history - his work and list of collaborations with the great musicians of the last 7+ decades is astonishing - from Garland to Gaga. His achievements will rarely if ever be equaled.

ETA: he also participated in the fight for civil rights:

"Bennett’s friendship with Black musicians and his disgust at the racial prejudice he encountered in the Army led him to become an active supporter of the civil rights movement. He answered Harry Belafonte’s call to join Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1965 Selma-to-Montgomery voting rights march and perform for the protesters."

I remember her as Molly Ringwald's mom in "Sixteen Candles." Apparently she appeared on Broadway in one role and won a Tony for it. Not bad! Her daughter, Mary Stuart Masterson, has touching memories as well. RIP

She originated the role of Miss Mona in "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" and received the Tony as Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Dolly Parton played the role in the film version.

Carlin Glynn also played Jessie Mae, the easily irritated daughter in law of the main character played by Geraldine Page in the theatrical film "The Trip to Bountiful", for which Ms. Page so deservedly received the Best Actress Oscar.

My mom and dad told me stories when I was little about when they went to nightclubs in the 50's. It wasn't like it is today. Men would dress up in their suit and tie, and women would dress up in the latest fashion. One of the places they went to was called The Coronado Club. It no longer exists, but there was a band always there on the weekends. Mom and dad said that there would always be someone there performing songs of Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra. This is one of the reasons I loved Tony Bennett so much, and I still have all the 33 1/3 rpm records (not albums) that my mom and dad bought to play on their RCA Victrola record player. One of my favorites that my mom loved was Tony Bennett singing Moonglow.

When I saw on the news about Tony Bennett passing away, it brought back those memories of my parents and The Coronado Club.

RIP Tony Bennett. You will be missed.

Tony Bennett was the coolest of the cool. I remember when a musician friend of mine, who has a certain amount of fame of his own, got to have his picture taken with Tony. He was totally starstruck. I found it amusing, but I understood. RIP, Mr. Bennett.

Pamela Blair, the actress who created the character of Val in A Chorus Line passed yesterday. She was 73. I’ve been humming Dance Ten/Looks Three (Tits and Ass) ever since learning of her passing.

Celebrated musician Mark Laforme passes at age 69

I heard about him from Derek Miller, the guitarist who played the closing ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, and from Dave DeLeary, who did a podcast called Aboriginal Podlatch. I fell in love with Mark's 2006 album, Vintage, especially the songs All Souled Out and Blue Plate Diner.

One day when young Skateycat was maybe 5, she said to me, "Why does he sing "Elephant!" in his song?" This was at the end of every chorus of All Souled Out. I listened to it again and sure as heck I could only hear Elephant! from then on.

Derek and I would correspond every now and again, and when my sister was looking for artists for a course that all the first years were taking at UC Berkeley, I suggested she get Derek Miller, who had just done an album of covers for the movie Rumble: Indians Who Rocked the World. She got the school to agree to bringing him and his band to California, so I suggested to Derek that he bring Mark LaForme. He did it, so I got to meet him!

After the show, we took everyone to dinner, and we told Mark the Elephant! story. He was very nice about it, though when we got to see him play in Toronto last summer, he re-arranged that line so it definitely sounded more like "Everything!" which he'd intended. During his break we got to visit for a bit, and we got to talking about the issues that Native people faced in our respective communities and he encouraged me to get an orange shirt to commemorate the experiences of those who were sent to residential schools.

Safe journey home, Mark. Thanks for the music.

Randy Misener passed away.

Loved his voice.

Meisner released four studio albums and had three top forty hits. I had forgotten he had done a duet with Kim Carnes (one of my favourite artists).

Deep Inside My Heart

Hearts On Fire

Never Been In Love

Meisner co-wrote and sang lead vocals on The Eagles first million selling single, Take It To The Limit.

An interesting section of his wikipedia entry:

Many people who met and worked with Meisner remarked on his kindness. Don Felder, James Taylor, and Rick Roberts described Meisner as one of the nicest people they had ever worked with. Felder added, "He was a wonderful Midwestern guy with a great heart and a loving soul." Henry Diltz, who photographed Meisner extensively with the Eagles and in the early 1980s during Meisner's solo career, said, "Randy Meisner was a very gentle soul. Pisces. A quiet and friendly guy. No aggressive vibe at all. Very sweet. He was so there and open."

Paul Reubens aka Pee-wee Herman has died:

I can't think of him as a 70 year old man. He was such a wonderful goofball. And he had that great retort after he had a spot of trouble at a porn film ("Anyone heard any good jokes lately??") with that laugh. His Saturday morning show was a hoot. RIP
