The Wisdom of Trauma is a documentary about Dr. Gabor Mate and his quest to understand how much trauma has affected individuals and society as a whole. And how if we understand more about the impact of trauma, we will rely less on masking the symptoms and offering real help to people and what they have gone through. I found the first half of this documentary quite captivating, but found the second half to kind of go off course. The parts of the movie where people are helped to work together to discover solutions are quite strong. I kind of wish we had seen much more of these segments.

Just finished the "Banshees of Inisherim". Amazing performances from Brendan Gleeson, Barry Koegan and Colin Farrell, as well as the actress who played Farrell's sister in the movie. Kind of a depressing movie, but beautifully done.

Just finished watching this today. At first I was annoyed with the movie as I found the tone to be condescending towards the characters. Then I started getting into it with all the wonderful performances as you mentioned. Then with the third quarter, I thought, "wow, this is a weird movie". And I ended up pretty much at the same place as you. But I felt it was quite depressing rather than kind of depressing. It definitely deserved the nine Oscar nominations it received, shame it didn't win a few. I think Colin Farrell gave one of his best performances so far. Thankfully it did better at the BAFTA's, winning best picture, screenplay and supporting BAFTA's for Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan.

I watched EO last night. OMG, devastating. I expected to be crying all the way through the movie, but it wasn’t until the very end that it really got to me. I was yelling at the TV. And it’s making me rethink some of my food choices.

The innocent way EO fell into the line of cattle to be slaughtered, and the look on his face in the final scene, so curious and hopeful and innocent…. It really gutted me.

Started watching Banshees last night but when it got more and more violent I stopped watching. Didn't want to go to bed right after watching this movie. Will watch the rest later. So far I have liked the Irish landscape (wish I could visit), Colin Farrell and the actress who played his sister.

ETA- Watched the rest of the movie. It seems I could have watched it before going to bed- just 15 minutes were remaining. So after the movie ended today, I watched the whole movie from the start.

It is such a good movie! I had read mixed reviews of it, so I was not eager to watch it. I wish I had watched it before the Oscars. The acting was superb, by all. Lovely cinematography. A lot of human and animal emotion. The complex characters are portrayed so well!

Was it depressing? I don't know. Perhaps I had wished or hoped for a slightly different ending but this seems more realistic. The uplifting part was seeing the compassion in the middle of suffering. In a way it was beautiful.

Now that I have seen two very good movies - Banshees and Women T.- was EEAAO really the best movie this year? I can answer that after I watch it. It's possible that I may like All Quiet... more than any other movie, but who knows? This was a strong year for movies.

I hope this is not a spoiler.........

Obviously Colm was going through depression. He realizes that he won't live forever, and will be forgotten. Was the fingers thing due to his depression? Do depressed people do those kinds of things? (I know some kill themselves). Siobhan, who has a clear mind, can feel the hopelessness around the island and she wisely decides to leave.

This is such a touching movie! I got a lot out of it, after watching it for the second time.

Has anybody else seen The Whale? It looks like Brendan Fraser will be winning an Oscar tomorrow. But from watching the trailer for The Whale and all the clips I've seen on talk shows he has appeared on, each makes it look like some pretty bad over-acting. So much so that I don't plan on seeing this movie? Would that be a mistake?

For now, I'm hoping Austin Butler takes the win.
I wanted Austin Butler to win, but I have not seen Whale yet, so this could be an unfair judgment.

In theatres on April 14th is a movie that looks like it might be good: Mafia Mamma, an action comedy starring Toni Collette and Monica Bellucci. The movie is directed by Catherine Hardwicke, whose other movies include Thirteen (Evan Rachel Wood and Holly Hunter), Lords of Dogtown (Emile Hirsch and Heath Ledger) and Miss You Already (Drew Barrymore and Collette again).

DVD Netflix informed me that I have reached the Queue limit(500).So I can't add more. I will delete a few to make room.

ETA-

I deleted those with very long wait and a few others that didn't interest me much. So I am comfortably at 491 now.

I really enjoyed Eternals. On many levels. Big story, big cast, lots of impressive visuals.

Just got back from watching the Eternals and loved it! It’s not crazy good but it is really good. I really wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did given the mixed reviews. This definitely isn’t your typical superhero flick and contains more than one twist and turn that will get you thinking. Oh yeah there are two post credit scenes so don’t leave!

My expectations were lowered because of the so-so reactions I heard about this movie. So I ended up liking it so much that I wondered what the critical people were talking about...

Saw Eternals on Friday. I liked it overall, but it dragged a bit at times. I think the sheer size of the cast was kind of cumbersome, though the quality of the individual performances was top notch (in most cases). I'd maybe give it 6.5 or 7 out of 10.

I think they introduced so many characters so that there could be a bunch of spin-off movies. With that in mind, I think the characters interacted well with each other and were also interesting in their own right. I am wondering what will happen with this part of the Marvel universe what with the movie only doing well enough to break even.

The Eternals is my favourite Marvel movie. Just finished, quite beautiful. This doesn’t mean a lot, I am impressed by myself when I can finish a Marvel movie. But not only did I just finished it all the way through, I am rewatching it right now.

Congrats on the stamina!! :D

Reading some critics' take on Eternals and it seems like many of them are taking out their frustrations with MCU and corporation-produced films as a whole on this film, and using Zhao as an example despite some nice comments she received on her directing. However, the main takeaway I got overall is that this film is convoluted and despite its ambitions to be more than the usual superhero film, it doesn't fully develop its characters as much as it should with its large cast. Further, a movie this big probably works against Zhao's strengths. Justin Chang of the LA Times wrote this in this review: "You walk out in the depressing realization that you’ve just seen one of the more interesting movies Marvel will ever make, and hopefully the least interesting one Chloé Zhao will ever make."

Interesting, because I was impressed with Chloe Zhao as the director of Eternals much more than with Nomadland . Eternals is so much a bigger movie, not just with the story, but the look of it, lots of CGI and a big, diverse cast. And a script, unlike Nomadland. ;) Also, I thought the CGI might be the best I have ever seen in a movie. I think Marvel is in good hands with somebody like Zhao in the director’s chair. I hope she gets more chances to do these kinds of movies.

Sarah Polley Asked to Return Her Oscar

“Dear Sarah Polley, we say this to you with deepest regrets: the Oscar you received was given by mistake – you must return it,” the opening line of the letter read. “We are giving you one more week to enjoy its presence in your home, but after that period of time you must mail it back to LA.”

Turns out it was a prank by her eleven year old daughter.

I saw 65 the other day with some friends and really enjoyed it. Great sci-fi adventure movie. Adam Driver is great as usual, but Ariana Greenblatt is a great discovery as the only other survivor of the ship that crashed to Earth after encountering an unmapped meteor shower. She is especially fantastic in that these two characters do not speak the same language, but she communicates so much just with facial expressions and other physical actions. Looking forward to seeing more from her in the future.

Another Isabelle Huppert viewing: In Another Country from 2012. I’m sure glad this is not the first movie of Huppert’s that I ever saw, because...I pretty much hated it. One of the worst-made movies of recent history. On every level it’s just bad. Huppert gets to play three characters (it seemed more like three variations of the same woman…that’s how bad the writing is – or was the acting or directing the problem?) There are five other cast members who also play different characters in each of the three parts of this movie. I can see the appeal of wanting to do a movie like this, each actor getting to play multiple roles. South Korean writer/director Hong Sang-soo fails everybody (including himself). But...the movie has a critic rating of 83% at rottentomates.com and Sang-soo was nominated at the Cannes Film Festival for the Palme d'Or. So what do I know???

The Guardian has an oral history of Grease, in which cast members share their memories of making the movie. It's interesting:

They note that a couple big Kenickie/Rizzo scenes were deleted from the movie.

I watched the Barbie trailer and it weirdly might get me to a theatre. I’m not a Barbie fan, my daughter doesn’t have any intentionally, but for some reason that movie looks so damn appealing
I feel the same way about the new Dungeons and Dragon movie :)

I am so excited for it honestly. It looks so fun. Greta Gerwig writing and directing pretty much guaranteed I'd see it. I really love her adaptation of Little Women from 2019.

Come Play is a supernatural thriller that made me shiver many times throughout the movie. It’s about an autistic boy and how he uses technology to communicate with people. And how his loneliness and isolation invites an entity into his and his parents lives through technology. The direction is brilliant and the cast serves the script and the director very well. Gillian Jacobs plays the mother, she is most known for the TV shows Community and Girls. John Gallagher Jr. is the father and is a Tony award winner for Spring Awakening and was in the TV show The Newsroom. As I watched Come Play, the movie that came to mind that it resembled was The Others, starring Nicole Kidman. The two movies are different, but both are wonderfully creepy and captivating. I expect this to be one of my favourite movies of 2023.

The news was revealed Friday morning at the Star Wars Celebration in London, which saw a guest appearance from Ridley. Her movie from Obaid-Chinoy, penned by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, will be set after the events of her previous movie in the franchise, Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, and as she builds a new Jedi Order. Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were previously attached to the project.

The documentary “Accepted” is about an unconventional prep school in Louisiana that received national attention for sending its graduates to elite universities.

In spite of the school’s eventual downfall due to unfortunate instances of falsifying documents in order to achieve a higher likelihood of acceptance into elite universities, the students were all on such positive trajectories and I could not help but applaud their hard work and dedication.

It was truly heartening to see the diligent efforts of the students being recognized through the remarkable opportunities presented to them.

While the circumstances surrounding their acceptance into prestigious universities may be tainted, we can hope that the skills, knowledge, and experiences they gained through their hard work will serve them well throughout their lives.
