Australia will have a public holiday on the 22nd (Thursday), which is honestly just boggling.

It can't be the 23rd because that's the Grand Final public holiday in Victoria, but I don't understand why we didn't pick the 20th, which would allow people to sit up and watch the funeral.

Also being a Thursday a load of people are just gonna take Friday off anyway.

Add BC to the "yes" list.

I don’t think it’s a full yes for BC. Schools are closed but not private business.

Watching today's procession, I'm struck by how exhausted Charles must be and there will be no rest for quite some time.
I know I was exhausted when I lost my family members throughout the years. I was much younger too. He does need some rest.

I was struck by this, too. He is a senior citizen who has now been on the move constantly for a week, back and forth to Scotland and Northern Ireland and London, on his feet for hours at a time for long services and ceremonies and vigils on hard stone floors and uncomfortable chairs, plus the processions ... my back would have given out long ago, and I'm much younger than he is! And on top of that, grieving is exhausting, and they have all (her children particularly) had to do so much of it in public. I hope they will get a bit of a break now, between this procession and the funeral on Monday. I think he still has to visit Wales, though, hasn't he? Can William and Kate go instead, or does it have to be the king?

This is more superficial, but I also was struck looking at the photos from the procession how much Charles suddenly looks like his mother. I wouldn't have said he did before, but there was something about his face and the way his mouth was set that was just exactly like her.

I also cried watching the Duke of Kent leaving the service at Westminster Hall. He could barely walk, and yet he was there and looked so determined to pay his respects. I don't think Princess Alexandra was there at all, I didn't see her in any of the photos. Two of the queen's cousins who have served nearly as long as she did. Many of the Kents and Gloucesters were there, though.

I'm pretty sure I got a glimpse of Princess Alexandra at one point as the camera panned across (from a distance) the larger extended family. Heck, I barely saw James, Viscount Severn and Princess Eugenie. They made a point of keeping the cameras off the family for the most part, save the ones who were standing immediately behind the catafalque.

Well that’s up to them.
Well, yes. Obviously. But throwing a day off school at parents with only a couple of days notice doesn't make it easy to find childcare. We plan for days off already in the school calendar, but telling me on a Wednesday that my kids don't have school the following Monday is not cool. My job is flexible and I can work from home, but many parents will find themselves in a tough situation.

Folks, the U.S. government made Juneteenth a federal holiday on June 17, 2022, just two days before its first observance. Everything worked out fine.

Well, yes, but it was a right royal pain in the ass for anyone working in finance and banking since, suddenly, the Treasury was closed that day which meant wires couldn't be sent. Delayed more than a few mortgage closings as a result. That was a huge cluster.

Really drives home the need to have a village to count on when needed.

I am off the 19th but feeling this lately as my DH and my parents (our main child care providers) are all away at the same time.

I’m winging it (taking time off work mostly) but it has crossed my mind a few times that I don’t know who I would call if an emergency came up this week. :shuffle:

It will work out fine, but that doesn't make it convenient. And it doesn't mean it's not stressful for the people who have to make adjustments with a few days' notice. YMMV.

Yes, in this photo I think Princess Alexandra is standing in the middle of the group, tenth from the right. That would be her daughter-in-law, Julia, next to her and her son, James, standing right behind her. I'm glad she was able to be there.

It wasn't during the school year (unless you go to year round school) though.

Um, yes it was. My kids are in school until late June.
Yup, it depends on what part of the country you're in. Here in Oregon, schools typically go until the 2nd week of June and the 3rd week is possible if there are make-up days added on during the year for snow days.

It’s also kinda like when your kid suddenly takes sick and it’s tough with working parents.
