Here is an article from nearly a decade ago which describes her long career (even then) and her association with a Richmond area theater company through her great friendship with its longtime production team. The article mentions her playing Falstaff, a male role, on Broadway and the great reviews that she received for her performance from someone as tough as Frank Rich, the legendary New York times theater critic.I remember seeing her as one of the stepsisters (I think with a creaking knee) in "Cinderella" in glorious black and white years ago. We were the last family on the block to get a color tv. So when the Wizard of Oz came on tv one year, we watched it at a friend's and when Dorothy comes out of her house and into Oz in full color, our MINDS WERE BLOWN!Yep. That's was my first thought. Same here ... the first time us kids saw Wizard of Oz in color, we thought it so great that my dad (who hadn't seen it in color since he saw it in a theater in 1939) promptly bought a color set.We were the last family on the block to get a color tv. This was a brave woman. She had a very promising Hollywood career but traveled to DC to protest McCarthyism and paid the price. She was never accused of being a Communist—she went to support her colleagues who were accused. She could have remained silent but she spoke up. RIPR.I.P.
