I think it's dated to act like Canadians deserve to be mocked for effectively being skating fans, especially over something from 20 years ago. And I don't believe for a second you'd appreciate it directed at Americans.

I personally am not interested in hashing out SLC again because my taste in skating has evolved over time with COP. I've not been much of a fan of Sale's since shortly after 2002. I understand the argument for B&S, I felt differently on the night in question, and the real loser was figure skating in general considering the changes to the sport that came after. But this is a discussion board, and people will disagree on skating results. I certainly have "discussed" certain more recent OGM winners. (And American fans sure as hell got defensive over it)

I'm simply over this idea that poking Canadians is cute when it's gone on so long with specific people congratulating themselves for being mean-spirited. God forbid anyone push back, then it's just Canadians being overly sensitive, as if we're the only group who bristles over decades of this garbage. I find it sad people can't move on. It it were a less popular poster, many wouldn't find it clever at all. But that's the nature of it with certain cliques on this board, imho.

The rest of your post I am completely mystified by, because I watch all sorts of old programs. I've watched R&K's Valse Triste from 1993 so many times it's ridiculous. I am sorry if my post read as though I would judge anyone for doing the same. We're skating fans, most of us for decades. I'm glad you have a program or two you enjoy going back to.

How do you feel about Hanyu fans, about Russian pairs fans, Yuna fans, Eterni fans, I could name a few others, are they easy to trigger? Or is that different somehow?
 
I think it’s funny that one Canadian skater getting some heat now results in all Canadian fans being poked and prodded. Like seriously, I’m sure all of Canada isn’t this homogenous fan base even if some people speak as if they’re personally attacked as a nation when one Canadian skater is being targeted for whatever reason - legitimate or not.

Last time I checked, skaters who made public spectacles of themselves can come from every country, and it’s hasn’t meant that when some posters made fun of them for doing so was an action of aggression warranting the UN Security Council to call a crisis situation…I mean maybe Interpol should be called but…;)

I see Russian skaters constantly getting torn down, even pre-war, American pairs have been trashed for how many years?, etc.

But I do agree with the comment that people constantly put a twist on things because of their own biases and assumptions. I remember critiquing Chen and getting heat because I supposedly must love Hanyu more, etc. I remember saying V/M won in 2018 fair and square IMO and I was flamed as a P/C hater of some kind, even though I much prefer the latter. People's biases lead them to think it's one or the other in these fan debates.

One thing I can say RE: Canadian fans and this board is that when I was very vocal about stressing there were a lot of things going on behind the scenes at Skate Canada around the time leading up to 2021 Worlds that led to many top-level skaters being frustrated, there were posters here who :rolleyes: me and insisted a lot of the problems must have been Covid related and getting incredibly defensive at me poking at Canada in general. But now it seems everyone is on board with the Federation having tremendous problems. At least there's that.

I have unfortunate experience on goldenskate, even though I'm much newer here. You couldn't say anything less than glowing about Patrick Chan, lest you be called anti-Canada by 10 different posters (one of them adding multiple ellipses between each word, making it the most tiresome reading ever). I don't know what it is, but again, meh. I think the only Canadian skater I've ever liked is Kurt Browning, so it makes sure contact is minimal, at least.

I can bash American skaters all I want though, all I'll get is someone making a sassy comment in return, if they don't outright agree :P

I appreciated the skating skills (if not the programmes :shuffle: ) and when it was Virtue/Moir v Davis/White, I definitely leaned more to the Canadians. When it was Papadakis/Cizeron v Virtue/Moir, I preferred the French.

For @canbelto and anyone else who falsely accuses me of disliking ALL North American skaters, here’s a list of some of the North American skaters I like/have liked over the years:

Brian Boitano
Michelle Kwan
Marie-France Dubreuil/Patrice Lauzon
Patrick Chan
Joannie Rochette
Jason Brown
Nathan Chen
Madison Hubbell/Zachary Donohue
Madison Chock/Evan Bates
Piper Gilles/Paul Poirier
Ilia Malinin

And yes, there are no North American pairs there (was thinking of including James/Radford, but only one season innit). I prefer the Russian/European style of pairs skating. Bite me. :P
 
Over decades as a skating fan, there are 11 NA skaters/teams who are somewhat likable (maybe 12 if pre-2016 V/M are included) …. The exceptions that prove the rule??

To be honest, this is beginning to feel a little bit like harassment at this stage and it’s not cool. Some of you got upset when I talked about American skaters so I stopped commenting on them (even the ones I like), but you still don’t seem satisfied. How does it affect any of you even if there were no North American skaters that I liked? :confused:

OK, who are you and what have you done with "give no fecks" @allezfred, who revels in his exemption as a moderator from being put on Ignore and takes the p*ss out of anyone and everyone with whom he wants to do so without any seeming cares for their feelings? I mean, honestly...
 
I just want to re-direct this thread to the fact that the only reason why the gold medal was even brought up in this thread in the past week or so was because Jamie herself used it as if it gave her some credibility in a incoherent message. I'm sure she only meant it as a response to those outside of this forum who thought her views meant her medal should be taken away, which is part of a larger trend of people thinking awarding bodies should take away their awards of merit to problematic people whose awards may look like those bodies are promoting such people; and that is it's own debatable topic. However, she also added it to hashtags about her views, made it seems like her being a gold medalist meant she was entitled to be the voice on those subjects, and used her clout as an OGM to promote events that are all about spewing her QAnon conspiracy theories and giving her the bully pulpit because she is an OGM.

So, if anyone brought up her OGM, it was Jamie. So some fans took the piss out of it to point out the large elephant in the room regarding her OGM. It may not have been very mature, but it doesn't really warrant turning it into a federal case since I didn't really see many, if any, post in this thread that specifically, actually, and/or seriously re-litigated her OGM. Just a snide comment once or twice, but most of the posts were about her actual views and comments and whether they could stand to watch her now. If her OGM was brought up in some posts, it was just an incidental reaction to the fact that she put so much stock into it first and related it to what ended up becoming the dominant topic of this thread (her fall down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole and ostracizing her friends and family to the point they have separated themselves from her).

And I also don't get how one admittedly snide comment against Jamie became an attack on all Canadians. I found the initial reaction accusing allezfred of hating all North Americans as a response to be out of nowhere, but kind of funny, at first. But then the following post about "self-care" was even more snide than his initial post and gave the impression that Canadian fans can't take any less-than-positive comment about one of their skaters, and that they are of a hive mind; in other words, we are now presented with a situation where one cannot make any comment about one Canadian skater without insulting all of Canada and all Canadian fans, which I actually don't believe is true because if it was, it is actually a pretty bad generalization of an entire fanbase whose only connection to one another is where they were born/permanently/indefinitely reside and are domiciled.

Honestly, I have to agree that this is all getting a little weird. I've teased @allezfred as much as anyone else about his visceral reaction to American pairs, but his preferences are his preferences and he's allowed to have them just like any of the rest of us. Why should he have to hit a certain target number of North American skaters he likes?

Indeed. The Russians and the Hanyu fans are infinitely more poorly mannered and less classy in general than the most frenzied of Canadian skating fans. Nothing written in this thread comes close to the vitriol I've seen from those fanbases.
