Netflix/Prime/Hulu/BritBox Binge Watching: Coronavirus Edition

Regarding limited series be it fiction, true crime or documentary: Do you experience series that drift or meander too much? I see series that are good but I think they could be better if they number four or five (or less) instead of eight.

For example I thought “The Keepers” and “The Times Square Killer” were well worth every episode. But then I watched “The Mind of Aaron Hernandez” and thought this could be halved and be better. I watched the fictional “Pieces of Her” and thought our two main characters were running in circles sometimes just to deliver eight episodes. This seems to happen more on Netflix but that may be that they have so much content.

I’m having that issue with Inventing Anna. There was absolutely no need for nine episodes.

My mom and I started The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window and we’re all in. Love the suspense and the cliffhangers at the end of each episode.

I didn’t see those ( oops I’ve started Loki) but certainly the last season of Game of Thrones was way too compressed. Otoh I tried to watch the Reacher series and I thought it meandered. I hate to admit this but I skipped episodes and went to the final hour. I never do this with books but lose patience if I think a show is wasting time but want to know how it ends. And then there are shows like “Station Eleven” that are fantastic but I want more because I was consistently surprised by and enthralled with story.

After Mrs. Maisel, we went back to watching 1883. What a contrast! This show seems to get worse as it goes on. The plot moves so slowly, the dialogue is minimal (especially compared to Mrs. Maisel, LOL) and rather clumsy, the accents are thick, the main character's teen romances are increasingly silly and unbelievable, and the voiceover dialogue hard to take seriously. I've found it difficult to stay awake through the last few episodes. Overall, this series feels like a concept that never came to life, as opposed to a real story.

Episode 8 of Mrs. Maisel.

Lenny Bruce, Abe, Joel, Mei SO good.

But Midge ugh…… :wall:

Luke Kirby deserves all the praise in that episode. Such good work.
 
I kind of wish Midge (and even Rose’s) arc didn’t take the entire season and instead took half the season and we could see progression a bit faster, but I guess they have a plan for season 5 and couldn’t resolve their arcs sooner than they chose to. It was just a bit exhausting and frustrating to watch Midge this season as she became less enjoyable, which I know was on purpose, but you wish it didn’t have to last as long as it did when there wasn’t that much of import that happened this season. I’ll sum up season 4 as arguably needed character development, but paced too slowly and not very fun for the viewer to watch. I know people love Susie but she was annoying me earlier (I know putting her with Rose and whining until the whip cream was supposed to be funny but it made me roll my eyes about how they were dragging out that joke), but once she got her office running with her secretary and had a purpose, she reminded me why I enjoyed her character so much. she had an entire arc too and didn’t dwell in one place too long. Shame the writers didn’t think to do the same with Midge.

I didn’t mind Rose’s arc as it moved forward at about the pace that you would expect for a supporting character.

But with Midge I feel like they started with the idea of episode 8 and worked backwards with the writing rather than building up to what happens in a forwards way to episode 8.
 
I have never liked Star Trek episodes with Q. I find the character annoying and the concept lazy. I am also not a fan of time travel and alternate realities. There are some I've enjoyed, but it has to be done really, really well.

So you can imagine how I feel about Season Two of Picard.
 
I liked Q in Next Generation but was less thrilled when they brought him across to Voyager. I was also less than whelmed by S1 of Picard so I stand warned.

I watched the first four episodes of The Dropout with Amanda Seyfried about Elizabeth Holmes. I think it was a bit uneven to start but the latest episode was a blast. I’ll just say Alan Ruck makes everything better.

Picard when to see her in the Pilot, so she's around. But probably not in this alternate timeline they are in right now (since all aliens are slaves and stuff).

He is gorgeous. And I think he is a pretty damn good actor too. Such expressive eyes.

I watched the first four seasons of The Last Kingdom, and I'll get to the last one as soon as I finish with Vikings. Speaking of Vikings, I kind of have a crush on the guy who plays Ivar the Boneless. He may be a pretty evil guy, but the actor, Alex Hogh Andersen, is straight up beautiful. And he does an amazing job with the character.

I had a curious reaction to Evan Rachel Wood’s two part “Phoenix Rising” about the abuse she suffered in her relationship with Marilyn Manson. I knew that I liked her body of work. She is talented. And I’m glad she called Manson on his abusive practices to the women in his life. But I was surprised to find that I didn’t like her. I kind of felt like the other women who came forward were there for her convenience. And then she threw her dad under the bus a couple of times because he wasn’t always there when she needed him. I don’t know—maybe I need to watch it again. HBOMAX
 
We watched the first two episodes of “Minx” on HBOMax and love it so far. Obviously tons of nudity so if that bothers you avoid it.
 
I watched The Tinder Swindler on Netflix.

Fascinating to watch but now I need something light and fluffy to clear my palate.

For a brief moment at the end I had hope that shit had to pay for the damage it did. Then I lost all hope in humanity again. That pile of crap is still living the high life.
