Not that I condone it, but the IOC/IPC announcement included the following statement about very short notice and lack of time to respond, specifically citing the Paralympic Games:
  1. Wherever this is not possible on short notice for organisational or legal reasons, the IOC EB strongly urges International Sports Federations and organisers of sports events worldwide to do everything in their power to ensure that no athlete or sports official from Russia or Belarus be allowed to take part under the name of Russia or Belarus. Russian or Belarusian nationals, be it as individuals or teams, should be accepted only as neutral athletes or neutral teams. No national symbols, colours, flags or anthems should be displayed.
    Wherever, in very extreme circumstances, even this is not possible on short notice for organisational or legal reasons, the IOC EB leaves it to the relevant organisation to find its own way to effectively address the dilemma described above.
    In this context, the IOC EB considered in particular the upcoming Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 and reiterated its full support for the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the Games.

Given that then athletes were quarantine for 2 weeks before competing and in China where I assume state controlled news is all that's available - would they have true knowledge of the events unfolding?

Yes, I think the IOC needs to follow all the recommendations for participation in events, but feel for athletes caught up in this.

The FIA are going to get splinters up their arses from the fence-sitting. Russian and Belarusian racing drivers will be allowed to continue competing under neutral flags.

However, Motorsport UK have banned all Russian/Belarussian drivers, so even if drivers can continue to compete in international series, they will not be able to compete in the UK.

EDIT: And just after I post this, the F1 journalists are all aflutter - apparently Haas will officially announce tonight that Uralkali is dumped as the sponsor, Nikita Mazepin loses his seat, and Pietro Fittipaldi will be Mick Schumacher's teammate for the second pre-season test and likely the first few races. Now that's a pair of famous names united.

Maybe they think they have an angle because the games had already formally begun before the ban.

And LOL at China's denial.
 
I wonder if Russia really knows what it would achieve with those appeals in the current situation.

I mean Putin is shutting out the whole world, so that he can tell his people that he's heroically fighting crazy Neonazis in the Ukraine, which doesn't really exist as a nation anyway.

Then his athletes would play without a flag at soccer World Cup and everything else and I assume they'd be greeted by a full stadium of Ukrainian flags everywhere at the moment.

And in case some athletes get hold of a smartphone, they might notice that for some strange reasons all their neighboring countries are cheering for the Ukrainian "Nazis":

Given the track record of the CAS in these matters I wouldn't be surprised if they ruled in Russia's favour.

The Russian feds doing the appealing are using the exactly same argument as was used for Kamila. It would cause "irreparable harm" to not be in the Paralympics or the World Cup. They may win in the Paralympic case. But I doubt they will in the World Cup case. And even in the Paralympics case, the IPC can say that, if Russia and Belarus are allowed, they'll have to shut down the games and that will cause irreparable harm to way more athletes.

I guess we'll see.

The argument they're making is the kind of argument the CAS absolutely loves. The CAS has consistently ruled in favour of individual rights over the betterment of the sport. I don't know what will happen with the Paralympics because the Russian & Belarussian athletes have been sent home, and when you combine that with the Chinese entry rules for COVID, and the event being only a week long it will be hard to get the Russian athletes back to even compete.

They would also get to hear the music from Alysa Liu's Free Skate at the start of every match.

I think the way the CAS is handling it is to take too long to hear the case so it becomes moot. The games have already started and they haven't made a ruling! (This is just my opinion. I don't have inside information or anything.)

They'll have a CAS panel that convene for these sorts of things during the Paralympics just like they did during the Olympics, but I guess we'll see what happens over the weekend.

At this point United States is just as dominant in artistic as Russia was in rhythmic. Where is all the attacks on Americas Viners controlling artistic?
