They found a body today that matches her description. What a tragedy. What do you think of it?

Anyone watch "For the People"? There was an episode that kind of mimics this situation. Man pushes his wife over a cliff (but in an area where he cannot be prosecuted).

oh, I'm sorry to hear this, although not surprised.

ETA: apparently the remains have not been confirmed as yet, although it looks likely. Also, the fiance/"person of interest" has gone missing, after refusing to cooperate with authorities since he returned to his parents' house.

Ya, where did he go now?

How did they know where to find her, poor thing?

I think she was talking with her mom from the car because she and he had been fighting and it was ongoing. Also I saw a blurb of a couple who picked him up hitchhiking and took him to near his car, but he jumped out and ran off....

They didn't know. I think they just kept looking. "North Port police, FBI and other agencies are searching for Laundrie in the vast Carlton Reserve, a nearly 25,000-acre preserve with about 80 miles of trails in Sarasota County, where his family says they believe he went earlier this week. Police said the search concluded after dark with "nothing found." The search was scheduled to resume Sunday morning.

What is wrong with people?

Only indigenous people go missing? That is weird.

When reading up last night, I also learned about a double murder in a similar area that is still unsolved, that police had been considering in case there was a connection (I think they have now ruled it out). It's quite chilling.

The last I heard was that they decided the two crimes are not linked.

I am listening to the news right now. One of the downsides of the 24 hour news cycle is that they just say the same thing over and over, and call it "breaking news".

Saw footage from the woman who realized that she might have caught the van.....and sure enough she reviewed what she had filmed, and there it was!

Also, they are bringing in a forensic pathologist from out of town. They will then be able to "officially" identify the body.
I would have to think that the body must be in bad shape, or they would not need a pathologist to identify.

What a mess! And whatever the outcome, it will touch so many lives....friends, families, etc.

1. No one at this time knows where Gabby is. She might be alive.
2. No crime at this time has been proven to have been committed.
3.IF a crime has been committed, we have no idea yet who did the crime.

Why the rush to wish ill of people until we have proof of wrong-doing??

This whole thread was started because her remains were found.

It is possible that her demise was not at the hands of Laundrie...but his refusal to cooperate and subsequent disappearance are odd choices.

My biggest question is - he returned to his parents' house Sept 1, and her parents did not report her as missing until September 11. How the hell did he explain his reappearance alone to his parents? Surely there had to be some sort of communication (or attempted communications) between her family and his during those 10 days? Even his sister Cassie said she had been unable to speak with him in an interview from before the body was found. How was everyone not talking about his return the second he got home, even if the answer was they had a big fight, they broke up and he left?

I thought there is still an autopsy to be done before they confirm that the body found is that of Petito.

I've only seen a few things on the news about this story, but it was stated that Laundrie and Petito have mental health issues that have been a part of their life. The focus on mental health issues being problematic in their relationship was on Petito's struggles. And that police had been called at least once to deal with Petito physically assaulting Laundrie.

I'm just guessing, but from what I've heard it seemed as if Laundrie had had enough with their relationship problems and left Petito and went home. But I am unsure why we speculate about any of the details until officials prove what happened. But I have to agree it's strange that Laundrie seems to have disappeared. But that could be related to his mental health struggles. I am unsure if he has had contact or not with officials in their attempts to find Petito.

He is clearly an incredible actor and liar as evidenced by that body cam footage. I think he told his parents a tall tale about her going back to NY and pretended like everything was fine. Meanwhile he was texting her parents from her phone that she was out of cell range so I think that kept them quiet for a while. Otherwise they for sure would have filed a report sooner.

I don't think its even a quesiton that he is guilty as sin based on his actions and IMO he very very likely murdered the newlyweds in Moab.

Dunno about that, but they were called at least once for Laundrie physically assaulting Petito.

Yes, well, it could turn out to be that that's what happened and she was coincidentally killed the same day he left her. Sometimes things like that happen. Just not very often.

Based on one clip of body cam footage? I agree that his actions are suspicious, but assuming that means he murdered three people is a pretty big leap of logic.

No, based on his actions, which is what I wrote above. Who just drives home thousands of miles without their fiancee and doesn't report them missing? And then goes into hiding. Yea, thats beyond suspicious.

Little correction. Remains were found in Wyoming. They have not been confirmed as Gabby's. Listening to Dr. Baden today the remains cannot be confirmed as Gabby's or anyone else's until a full autopsy is done. To confirm identity they will need dental records, comparison photos of her tattoos, or x-rays that show broken bones.

Her body lay out there for weeks. One would imagine it is not in pristine shape.

The forensic pathologist will start tomorrow. Identification could take a couple of hours, or longer. Cause of death my take much longer, depending on what they find...and what the toxocology test show. Was she high on drugs? Did she fall?

Having said all that, one of the law enforcement people giving a press conference yesterday began with "We offer our condolences to Gabby's family" OH - can we all say "oops". I would assume that law enforcement is fairly certain it is Gabby's body, but they are supposed to refrain from confirming that until the autopsy.

I didn't say it wasn't suspicious. What I said was that attributing three murders to him, on the basis of that suspicion involving one missing person, seems like a stretch.

Well, they were at the same place and at the same time. Sure evidence would be needed, but based on all I'm seeing, it looks very fishy. He was pulled over the day before in that town while his girlfriend was sobbing pretending everything was fine to the cops. Seems logical to me that he is A) a liar, B) abusive, and C) dangerous/sociopathic. Still can't convict with just that info, of course, but if they were both in vans staying at the same campsite (which we don't yet know, but if they were), then its very easy to see how that could have happened...

There was a good post on FB that analyzed the video from their traffic stop.

ETA: found it.

Important lessons to learn from Gabby’s tragic life and death.

1. Based on the body camera video posted by the officers who pulled Gabby and her fiancé over for suspicious driving, some viewers assumed Gabby was suffering from mental illness and Brian was the stable one.

2. Some people may have assumed both partners were equally abusive and equally at fault. The old “it takes two” myth that doesn’t really apply to most abusive situations.

3. Some people may have even assumed Gabby was the abuser and Brian was the victim.

4. These assumptions are classic. Why? Because, in many cases, the target manages to keep things together until her breaking point, at which time others may see her crying or hear her yelling or see her breaking, and then they assume she’s “crazy.”

5. Meanwhile, the abuser plays the part of the poor, patient partner who has to deal with this crazy person. But all the while, he’s been acting very differently behind closed doors, pushing her to this point intentionally and feeding on her emotional break. He LOVES to see evidence that he has hurt her. He LOVES to see her pain.

6. For this reason, “breaking her” has been his goal from the start. It may take him hours or weeks or months or even years to break her, but he won’t stop until he gets that reaction, and then he’ll point the finger and say, “See? She’s crazy. I’m just trying to keep her calm.” And then he’ll do it again. And again. And again.

7. As a result, some people will buy into that false narrative. Even the target. Which brings me to my next point.

8. In the video, we see Gabby making many excuses for Brian’s behavior, and she takes all the blame for everything he does.

9. We also see Brian blaming Gabby and saying he was just trying to keep her calm.

10. This is also the norm for victims of long-standing abuse. A target becomes conditioned to believe everything the abuser does is her fault.

11. Also, she clearly doesn’t want Brian to be in trouble. She’d rather pay the price and protect the man she loves. Also, remember she truly believes he only acted this way because of her, so she doesn’t want him to be blamed. This is also the norm.

12. Smart officers see right through this. Others buy the cover-up story. (And because some officers are also abusers, they all too frequently side with the abuser even when they know exactly what’s going on.)

13. I actually credit the police in Gabby’s situation. They were calm, they separated the couple, they interviewed them individually, they split them up for the night, they did everything right. I’m sure the officer has tremendous guilt about the end result and wonders if he could have prevented it, but I don’t blame the officers in this case. I was actually pretty surprised and impressed with how well they treated both Brian and Gabby (and, sadly, I was thinking how rare it is to see that.)

14. Many people have been shocked by Brian’s family’s refusal to cooperate with police. I’m not shocked at all. Let’s look at that a little more closely.

15. I’m also not surprised to learn that Gabby lived with the Laundrie family for a year. We all see this family will do anything to protect their son, even at the cost of an innocent young woman who was a real part of their family and soon to be their daughter in law. While most of us can certainly understand them wanting to protect their child, they crossed a moral line when Gabby went missing.

16. But I think it goes deeper than that. I think it shows them as a system of enablers who not only allowed Brian to abuse Gabby over a long term (which probably led to her intense anxiety) but also a system of gaslighters who were probably always shifting the truth to keep Gabby confused and make her believe she’s the problem. She was caught in an entire system of abuse. And once you’re in that web, it’s very very very difficult to see a way out.

17. I imagine they probably contributed to her abuse from the start and encouraged their son’s abusive behaviors by rewarding him, making excuses for him, blaming Gabby, flipping the script, and keeping her in the fog that breaks down a person’s psyche and spirit over time.

18. Gabby and Brian had been together since their teens. This is also common. These immature relationships work beautifully when both partners grow together and mature emotionally. But when one wants to keep the other down, naive, and under his control…and the other is growing, learning, and maturing, it doesn’t work.

19. We hear Gabby tell the officer that Brian didn’t think she could do her travel blog. It seems clear that he didn’t believe in her and was trying to make her not believe in herself.

20. She also says he didn’t like her working and that he locked her out of the van because she wouldn’t calm down. But when you listen to the full video, it sounds like he was upset because they’d spent too much time at the coffee shop with her working on her website when he wanted to go hiking. She wasn’t in her seat when he was ready to leave. Control issues?! He squeezed her face with his hand in anger. He cut her down and criticized her, verbally abusing her until she was a wreck of tears. He was breaking her spirit, intentionally.

21. Why? Because her focus wasn’t 100% on him. And because she had found a job she enjoyed and was good at and that allowed her to connect with other people, when he wanted her all to himself.

22. She now had this one little piece of her life that he couldn’t completely control, so he wanted to get rid of that. It angered him. He punished her for it. See the pattern?

23. The overall takeaway? When you see someone crying like this, don’t assume she’s crazy. Don’t buy into the false narrative given by the abuser. Don’t believe the cover-up story by the target who has been conditioned to carry all the blame and shame. And don’t assume she’s going to be okay. She just may end up your next recovered body.

24. If you or someone you love are in an unhealthy relationship, please don’t assume it will get better in time. I haven’t heard one single story where it got better. Not one. Not with therapy. Not with church. Not with prayer or forgiveness or complete surrender. Nothing works when the abuser is determined to destroy that target. He will not stop until she is erased from this world or from her life. And in many cases, he’ll walk away without any consequences.

Please don’t let the next Gabby be you or someone you love.

My understanding was that law enforcement had informed Gabby's family that it likely was Gabby. Likely by clothing, hair, personal belongings etc but that a formal identification had to be made by coroner. Shortly after I read that I think on Sunday the dad had posted on Twitter.

It's a bizarre case. Most people would return with at least an attempt at a story. I suspect they won't find him alive.

It is my understanding that law enforcement was restrained from making any comments until they had the Autopsy. I don't know what the dad tweeted.

There is a picture of where they found the body. There is a huge cross made of boulders (don't know who did that). At the right bottom of the picture, you can see crime scene tape. It is actually a bucolic place.

The parents must have assisted the fiance in fleeing. There have been press, and police in front of and behind that house for a long time.

If that was his answer and his family believed it, maybe they felt it was best to give him some space. And if they were not communicating regularly with her family, they would have had no reason to do so if they believed there was a breakup.

This is all hypothetical, of course. With the investigation ongoing, I'm sure there will be more details forthcoming.

I can't imagine how hard it must be to have a loved one missing - hoping for the best but knowing it's unlikely as more time goes by.
