2021-22 ISU Grand Prix assignments announced

I'd feel kind of bad for Guignard & Fabbri, who miss a once-in-a-lifetime home Grand Prix due to the weird circumstances.
Is there any way for the Italians to do a deal with one of the comps G/F are scheduled for to get them at home? They're the highest-ranked skaters Italy has, right? (Although I guess Grassl and Rizzo are pretty high up.)

Even assuming the ISU would sign off, they'd have to swap with Stepanova & Bukin, and Stepanova & Bukin could have taken either of Guignard & Fabbri's current assignments if they had wanted them.

For once they have two relatively easy assignments where they can definitely come second and have a good chance at the GPF, I am sure they would not want to have to face P/C and H/D instead.

Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) should host!:saint:

ETA that I checked online and the Taipei Arena reopened to the public on August 1 (though it "will retain a cap on indoor occupancy to 40 people") and there's the convenience of the hotel across the street that's previously been used for 4CC & Jr. Worlds.
So not much difference in audience attendance when figure skating events happen in Taiwan even when the arena is entirely open to the public.

J/K!!!!!!

If ITA had been a host event from the beginning, Stepanova/Bukin wouldn't have had that choice, because G/F would have been a host pick, which trumps skater preferences.

Yes, but it isn't S/B that is the problem so much as it is both H/D and P/C being there also. If Italy was a GP host in the first place chances are they wouldn't have selected P/C but instead forced them to go to Japan and they would only have H/D competing against G/F which would have probably been enough to ensure 2 silvers and a spot in the GPF.

Yep. Or better yet, they'd have invited Gilles & Poirier.

Good point! G/P are the most vulnerable of the top 3 and I suppose it would have been a dogfight between France and Italy as to who got H/D and who got G/P, lol.

Wow. I know we were speculating on Boston but I didn't expect the USFS to actually submit something. I'm glad they stepped up and offered but I'm even happier that Italy was awarded the opportunity. And nice to see Hungary also putting themselves forward.

Just going to throw it out there that I really wouldn't mind seeing Italy take over from China as a permanent host.

Cup of China in Chongqing originally was the 3rd GP, November 5-7, 2021.

It'll be interesting to see if any Italian skaters can or will get shifted to Torino? Will the 3 Chinese men & women get to keep their assignments? China's pairs & dance TBAs can go to Italy at least.

ETA: Grassl, Della Monica/Guarise & Ghilardi/Ambrosini (assigned to China originally) now have home ice. :)

My guess would be that Lin, Zhu, Yudong Chen, and Chen/Sun will lose their host spots. Italy has singles skaters and dance teams to take those assignments (and who probably deserve them at least as much as the Chinese skaters who currently have them).

I hope that Italy get a host pick in men and women too, so they can assign a skater/team to each discipline, although I would feel sorry for the Chinese skaters who get their spot taken for this to happen. I really hope to see Sara Conti / Niccolo Macii get the pairs host spot, I enjoyed watching them at the Gran Premio Italia last season.

That's what I think it will happen. It's why the FISG initial statement mentioned this as a great opportunity for our skaters. We need a second assignment for Frangipane and our women out there too!

Ladies is in an interesting spot with Gutmann, Negrello, and Beccari all skating on the JGP. How has Tornaghi been looking? Would any other Italian ladies be worth a GP spot?

Also: if Italy is going to be taking any ladies' spots (and you'd assume they would want them), that poses an imminent selection question, since surely the first person who would be in line for that would be reigning national champion Lara Naki Gutmann, who is still, as of this typing, on the entry list for JGP Slovakia next week.

First things first: FISG needs to come up with a cool name.
Something distinctive...

Oooooo... Good point! I'd probably pull her from the JGP and give her a host GP assignment instead. They already sent her to Sr Worlds last year.

Or, they'll go beg Carolina to skate.

It's also conceivable that FISG could get an exemption from the regular rules for skaters like Gutmann given the unusual circumstances, since she obviously would never have been assigned to the JGP if this Grand Prix was known to be happening earlier.
And Ginevra who is currently competing in Courchevel

Ehhhhh... She's probably not ready for the GP based on her skates in Courchevel this week.

Yaro Paniot is on his way to Champs Camp per his Instagram. My guess is that he is the TBA for SkAm.

Is Jimmy Ma on his way also? I think he has just as good of a chance at the TBA spot for the men.

Nothing on Jimmy Ma's Instagram.
