For God's sake, pick Vegas.

ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships 2023
BLR Minsk February 27-March 5, 2023
CAN Calgary or Regina or Winnipeg February 27-March 5, 2023
TPE Taipei City February 27-March 5, 2023
I hadn't heard that Canada was bidding on Junior Worlds. There hasn't been a Junior Worlds in North America since 2005, so this is a bit overdue. Not necessarily the cities I would have chosen to put forward, but of those, go with Calgary; don't send the poor kids to Winnipeg.

ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2023
BLR Minsk March 20-26, 2023
HUN Budapest March 20-26, 2023
JPN Saitama March 20-26, 2023
I bet the ISU will have to think long and hard about this one.

Is there a reason Montreal wasn’t automatically awarded Worlds in 2023? Did they not want it? Was the bidding process done before worlds got cancelled?

The bidding process wasn't done, though it was obviously underway. But Skate Canada didn't bid on 2023 Worlds. I believe there have been reports that they are planning a future bid, but hadn't decided on a year. Perhaps they're holding out for the pre-Olympic Worlds in 2025.

Lake Placid is a lovely place, but 4CC in January would be difficult, given the difficulties of getting there.
The 2022 4CC bids are quite a mix:

  • Lake Placid, very remote;
  • Colorado Springs, the lung-buster;
  • Tianjin, which would mean Olympic-year 4CC in the same country as the Olympics, which has never happened before (it did happen once with Euros in 1936);
  • Taipei, would that ruffle feathers in the PRC?;
  • and then Tashkent.

Interesting that USFS is bidding on both 22 and 23 4CC. Do they want to host in back to back years or are they just hedging their bets, hoping to get one of them?

And yeah, while it would be nice to have a major int'l on the east coast, Lake Placid is the last place I'd want to go in Feb. But I'm not sure CO Springs is that much better. Vegas in Feb sounds nice if the airfares are reasonable.

I wonder what happened to the supposed US bid for Worlds 2023. It will be at least 8 years between Worlds in North America now. :(

I don't know when bidding began for this, but if it was pre-cancellation they maybe decided that bidding for 2024 would be a stronger argument as that would give 4 years between NA World's slots than if it were only 3? (Obviously assuming they will bid for 2024, but I'm not sure why they wouldn't? It seems silly not to, especially when they might have an Olympic champion on team USA at that point).

Wasn't the report that they were eyeing 2024?

The first initial rumors of a U.S. bid were for 2023 and the host city was supposedly going to be Detroit. It seems it's still going to be Detroit, but now it's 2024.

Wasn't Taskent the lone bidder for 2022 Jr Worlds before they finally settled on Sofia?

Japan going with Saitama is getting a bit repetitive. Can't they put in Tokyo or even Osaka?

I remember Essen sounding off a year or 2 ago about Euros 2023. Hungary hasn't hosted Worlds since 1988.

Saitama is really big and handy for transport links domestically and internationally. It’s also very close to Tokyo anyway so there would be no point in moving it a few kms down the road so to speak.
I’m not sure about infrastructure further south in Osaka, but they might want to stick with Saitama because it’s tried and tested and there would be fewer organisational issues to sort out.

US Skating hosted Four Continents back to back in 2006 and 2007.

Is there like a rule that Worlds have to held in Saitama on a regular basis?

No, but I bet if you took a poll of skaters they would vote to have Japan host Worlds more frequently than not. ;)
Well, sure. But I am reliably informed that there are other cities in Japan that can host figure skating competitions :D

How much does it cost to go to Japan from the US normally? Anyone have some ballpark figures?
