2019-20 Canadian ladies news and updates

At Euros, most if not all the ladies who made the FS cut had 3/3s, (more 3z+3t than 3t+3t).
The ladies who made the FS from 17-24 did not earn the Worlds SP minimum (including poor Dasa Grm).

Very few falls in the SP (5 ladies fell), and of those 5, only one lady made it to the FS.

Quite a fascinating career! Thank you for sharing!

I'll keep in mind the correct spelling of Tracey's first name. :)

Youtube has a lot of Tracey Wainman videos I notice, so I'm inspired to take a trip down Tracey Wainman memory lane:

Back when ladies performing 3-lutzes was 'unheard of,' per Debbi Wilkes.

I never knew much about Tracey. What huge talent she had -- at age 13, a pre-contemporary era Canadian-style Alysa Liu, but with precocious artistic talent. It's surprising that Tracey never won a World or Olympic title. The above link as well as Wainman's Wiki entry relate Skate Canada's and the media's negative impact on her development, plus her growth spurt. All of these factors combined scuttled her promising career. I didn't realize that Tracey is Jozef Sabovcik's first wife and mother to their son, Blade.

Well, there are a number of interesting prospects among current Canadian ladies, with perhaps Emily Bausback having the most promising potential. There are a few others close in ability behind her. As far as breaking through internationally, that's going to be tough for everyone coming up among ladies around the world at the moment, as quads and triple axels are the order of the day in ladies figure skating. Albeit that 'ladies' is something of a misnomer.

Audreanne Foster skated nice except for pop and fall on 3rd jump. 33.93 in first so far-6 more skaters to go.

Sarah Maude Dupuis- clean, tidy and jumps all ok.(to my eye) now in first 40.47 - 2 more to go..Audreanne now in 3rd.
last skater-last canadian- Amy Shao Ning Yang-beautiful and polished-fall on 1st jump. - First- 42.56
so SArah Maude Dupuis 2nd and Audreanne in 4th-....24 skaters in that section.

Schizas won the SP in her group (I didn't see it). Our women are doing very well this week! Let's hope it carries over to 4CC!

And those keeping score, she would have had the world sp TES even with a fall (yes I know this doesn’t count because it was a junior event).

Happy our gals did well today and yes @danafan hope this continues to 4CC!

Madeline's free skate:

Girl still needs to get herself a Lutz, but she's got lovely qualities as a performer, certainly the most of the three who made the national podium this year.

Thank you for all the videos you put on youtube! It's much appreciated.

Assuming they send Madeline and Kaiya to junior worlds, I wonder where they could realistically place? I feel they're both capable of placing top 10.

The scores they got at Bavarian Open, for comparison, would have had them each ranked tenth (same as Alison) at last year's Junior Worlds.

Madeline in particular has a fairly low BV so she'd be dependent not just on going clean but on others not being clean. There's quite a roster of other skaters who, based on JGP, etc. results could outskate them, though obviously not all of them will skate well on the day (all three Russians, obviously, two South Koreans, two Japanese, three Americans, plus Georgian, Italian, Estonian, etc. skaters).

I agree top 10 is a best-case scenario but if everything falls into place I think it's possible - there are always skaters who underperform. Keeping the two spots is maybe a more realistic goal.

Madeline is finally starting to land her flip in competition so hopefully once it's more consistent we will see a lutz as well. I really like this girl.

So any chance Bausback gets a last minute entry for another chance at the TES? I wonder if they should have entered Schizas in the senior event at Bavarian Open...
Skate Canada wants to develop Schizas not throw her to the wolves by throwing her into Worlds. She hasn’t even done a Jr Grand Prix

it looks like worlds will be Pineault and Schumacher. Alison seems to bounce between events doing well then doing poorly. If that continues, she should do well at Worlds

I would hope Schizas gets jr worlds over Emily though

I'm not sure about that. Emily's free skate BV is much higher than Madeline's, and she's delivered it reasonably well a couple of times this season; she's got more upside than Madeline.

I mean, Emily did the JGP, has never done JW and is National Champion. If she can't go to SrW, I'm pretty sure she should/would get the choice of JW.

I could see SC sending Bausback to Challenge Cup like they did with Larkyn last year, although it may end up with the same result.

Maybe the best choice for SC is to give the option to Bausback - does she want to just go to junior worlds or does she want to try Challenge Cup, with the knowledge that if she doesn't get the minimums, she doesn't go anywhere because the junior worlds assignment would be given to Schizas.

I'm on the "please send Emily to Challenge Cup" bandwagon. I yelled "NOOOOOOOOO" when she popped the loop this morning.

If Pineault does get one of the spots and gets a clean triple/triple combo, she MIGHT have a chance at top 12 heading into the free with a little home ice PCS boost.

While that’s a fair thing for Bausback, it’s also a pretty big kick in the teeth to Schizas who would get nothing as senior bronze medalist. Especially since she has not been given the chance to get the minimums.

And just sayin’, but she achieved the necessary scores in the SP and FP this week even skating in a junior event. And of course it would be different for her with the pressure on in an international senior event to get them, but just stating that she did produce two programs showing the ability to attain the scores.

But hopefully this scenario will not come to pass, as I hope they do give Bausback another shot at the minimums.

Hey guys I’m a bit behind on the status of Gabrielle and everything but I’m trying to keep up

Is there anyway worlds could be Alicia and Gabrielle or is skate Canada not going to even look at Gabrielle because of her placement at nationals? Even with her placement at nationals I think she could still best schmuacher and bausback if they are eligible

Also I know Gabrielle may truly need a complete and total rest and healing of mind and body.
And probably should.

Also, Aurora is injured, correct?

I can't see them sending Gabby. She needs a break... It would be one thing if she had an off day at Nationals, but her entire season has been a bit of a mess. I'd say there's a 0% chance of her going to Montreal.

Yes - Aurora was injured and that's why she wasn't at nationals.

^^ Thanks, it probably is best that SC looks to the future of the ladies now. But after seeing the short program scores… I do think Gabrielle could best that.

But yes I do believe she needs a total rest

BTW Would those short program scores qualify onto the free program at worlds?

Alicia would have qualified last year in 19th place (higher than Alaine did, in 23rd).

As far as it goes, based on the totality of evidence thus far, retaining two spots requires somebody to have a Hail Mary performance beyond anything they've done so far this season -- which, admittedly, Gabrielle actually did do last year. But she was in worse shape at 2020 nationals than she was at 2019 nationals (where she had one good program), there's no real reason to do that again just because we got lucky before, especially as the downside is so huge.

Gabrielle remains the Canadian lady with the highest scoring potential, and if we want to have two spots for the 2022 Olympics based on 2021 Worlds results, having her in best shape to perform well in 2021 is more important (and, it should go without saying, her overall mental health is more important than that in turn). All of those needs are better-served by letting her rest.

Maybe somebody will have the skate of their lives at Worlds and pull it out. More likely they won't, that's just reality.
