Gracie Gold set to return

That being said. She did not look as devastated at the end as I have seen in the past. She looked frustrated and upset, but not like she just got a terminal cancer diagnosis. She was upset by her score, but actually I think her reaction was kinda healthy. Upset, but controlled and rational. So I still hope that this can be a stepping stone for her to better things. I might have done things differently, but I still hope things work out for the best this way. I hope her fire to keep going and comeback is still burning strong.

She was crumpled over in the KnC with her head in her hands...

Pretty clear that she has only recently gotten her jumps back and so wasn't ready to compete them yet. She looks about six months away from where she would want to be. If, as she says, this is about the next four years, than it's really nbd.

I hope she isn't too discouraged by this. I don't really fault her or the USFS, it's pretty clear that she has gotten the jumps back, but having never had to lose and regain her jumps before she probably wasn't aware that it would take time for them to be reliable for competition.

This is a win-win-win.

To come back at all after the last two year and skate on a big stage? Win. It can only get better from here on out. Win again. If she makes a podium run comeback, that's a super "Miracle on ice" type win, even if it's planned for.

I'm a Caps fan. Anything is possible.

Gracie wasn't the first skater to crumple over in the K&C after an unfortunate skate.

2012 Skate America

(Skip to 7:41 on the video)

Watching this video I can't help wondering how different Gracie's career might have turned out if she had gone to Toronto instead of to California back in 2014.

Judging by morning practice fotos, Gracie knew where she stands tech wise and was fine with it..

Using this event to gain a direct access to Nationals is a good explanation and reason why she is going through this, and why 2 well known trainers agreed to participate.

Because the alternative guesses would be that this is for PR/a media campaign to later write a book or to make a film, which is not a bad strategy given her past success and now overcoming difficulties.

Thank goodness Gracie is stronger than some of the individuals commenting (on FB) about her short program! The comment about "Who let her compete?" (on FB) is absolutely disgusting (in my opinion).

Great to see Gracie back!!!

Honestly, it's nice that fans are being gentle and supportive of Gracie, but I wish everyone would adopt a similar attitude *before* it's revealed that skaters are going through a lot, not just afterwards. It is possible to be nice, even regarding the roughest performances, and it would serve us all to remember that.

Grace is quoted in this AP article: https://www.yahoo.com/news/gracie-gold-back-figure-skating-long-way-193319493.html
"The expectation wasn't to come here and set the world on fire. I just needed to compete," the U.S. skater said. "On-brand for my personality is to go to one of the hardest Grands Prix in Moscow to do it, not at some tiny competition. The goal was just to show up and try to be brave."
Gold's skate included a fall and some jumps far below other skaters' difficulty level. "We just had to start with something, even if it was trash," she said. "This is six months out of rock bottom so we'll just go from there."
...
"I was trying to think why I was so nervous. You say it's been a while," she said, "but I've never gone into a big Grand Prix event where I was so, frankly, not trained."

Dave Lease and Jonathan ... I’m telling you now, you better not shame her on Sunday’s show!!! Chose your words wisely...

Seriously you expect these to not to trash someone. Is that the whole point of their show? You expect those two to pass up cheap shots. You’re living in fantasyland. At least it’s gonna be hard for them to be racist in this one

Just boycott them and then you won’t have to listen to the trash

Well there you go- she herself said she was “untrained.” I think this was really embarrassing for her and unfair for the next skater in line to get a Grand Prix event. Someone has got to finish last but she should have been at a much smaller event. Hope she can land a triple or two in the long program. She couldn’t eve get into a double axel and skated quite sluggishly. I’m also kind of skeptical of the effect this performance would have on her eating disorder. She’s quite unconditioned and I’m not sure why she would even want to skate in such a visible event looking and skating this way unless she feels she needs some motivation to get in shape.

Honest to god, this is a repulsive post.

Really proud of Gracie today. It took a lot of courage to go out there after all she has been through and being away from competition for so long. Based on the article posted above and her twitter posts it appears she is ok with where she is at. I’m excited to see her FS tomorrow. She will only get better from here.

Assuming Johnny and Tara do the play by play and also assuming Gracie doesn't skate her free program much better than her short, I'll be interested in how they handle the commentary, soft or harsh.

I can imagine them divvying the roles, with one (I feel it more likely to be Johnny) playing bad cop, and Tara being soft hearted social worker.

But I'm frequently wrong about those things, and maybe they'll both be big two-hearted rivers (I can't imagine them both being hard hearted).

What’s the weather like in Narnia where you live? You’re dreaming. She’s not in shape.

There’s definitely a difference between having the jumps and being trained. Gracie admitted she’s untrained. Being able to get the jumps back means she has something g to work with. But getting into competition shape takes repetitions, numbes and physical conditioning. There was no way she could get there in 6 months. But having a base to start with the jumps is a start.

As a huge supporter, I am kind of questioning this strategy. I’m worried she still has a lot of work before nationals and she’s used her one bye into the Grand Prix so if she doesn’t qualify for next year, she will have to requalify to nationals. Although, maybe that’s not a bad thing? I don’t know. Just happy to see her.

I'm questioning both her strategy and her objectives. If her intention was to be able to skate at Nationals one last time, this was as good an approach as any.

If, on the other hand, her intention is to do anything more than merely appear at one last Grand Prix event and one last Nationals, surely it would have been better to wait longer, perhaps until next summer's club competitions.

I'm surprised some of her Program Component scores were so low. Three of the judges, including the US judge, gave her a 5.75 for SS.

Training for years in obscurity isn't for everyone. The good thing about competition is that it allows you to see where you are. If I was a skater with no competitions coming up for the whole season, I'd be more likely to just give up because who cares....
