2018-19 Programs and Choreographers

TBH I had both reactions.

I thought "Seven Nation Army" choreographed by Shae Lynn Borne sounds amazing. But then again Marin doesn't strike me as the type that can knock a rock song out of the park with a huge presence on the ice. If anything I think the song will out-skate her unless she's doing some strange lower-key cover of it. BUT, the girls of Rafael's camp (at least Eunsoo and Mariah) have been doing hip hop dance classes, so if she's doing those maybe she's ramping up for tough music. I'm going to wait on this one.

I love the music choice, but I would've given this to Wakaba Higuchi instead. I can't see Honda pulling it off, but I could be wrong.

Ajax - I don't have high hopes for this program. Stephane's tango FS was choreographed by Antonio Najarro and its choreography and also the steps were way too complex for a junior like Shimada. I think even "a half" of it could be too complex. So I am expecting a nice, musical program, but nothing like Stephane's own FS or the even better exhibition version of it.

Didn't Stephane do a Piazzolla program during his competitive career? If this is half as good as that one I can't wait to see it :)

Camden PULKINEN
SP: choreographed by Stephane Lambiel
Oblivion(Astor Piazzolla) Lucia Micarelli

If the music is great, the program will also be of high grade. I like this music.

Koshiro Shimada
SP: choreographed by Stéphane Lambiel(His coach)
Benjamin Clementine Adios

Benjamin Clementine - Nemesis

Has Stephane been affected by Nathan?

ITA that it fits Wakaba better.

I’m choosing to be foolishly optimistic at this point in the year and am being swayed into excitement by the music choice alone. I’m sure in reality it’ll be a muzak version or otherwise underwhelming. 😂

According to this article, Satoko's FS seems to mix Piazzolla and Vivaldi.

Satoko Miyahara
FS: choreographed by tom dickson
invierno porteno (astor piazzolla),Concerto No. 4 in F minor, Op. 8, RV 297, "Winter" (The Four Seasons (Vivaldi))

The two music are different types of music. I do not like this way.

Actually, Piazzolla's 4 Seasons of Buenos Aires and Vivaldi's 4 Seasons are often performed together - and they dovetail nicely. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhzP61wTj8A

I can see that working for Satoko... however, Tom Dickson choreographed Jeremy Abbott's program to this same music (probably different cuts), it might be interesting to see how Satoko's program differs.

I'm sorry. However, the two musics have completely different periods and backgrounds when composed. I do not like such mixes that are common in figure skating.I do not like programs like dancing tango in the middle of Mozart's piano concerto.
I think that the top classical musicians will not do such a mix.

There is also such an example. But I do not like mixing it as one music. Because they are individually completed as beautiful music.

Unfortunately IIRC it was only skated in competition once (Nebelhorn?) and even that one was quite different from the sheer brilliance that was the exhibition version. That program really deserved to be seen on he world stage..

Miura/Ichihashi
SP:
Cry Me A River Michael Buble

Sena Miyake
FS:
Violin Concerto (Tchaikovsky)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-TDQz8Lyok

Tatsuya Tsuboi
FS: choreographed by
Symphony No. 9 (DvoRak) Neumann / CZECH PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

Japan's Junior men, Mitsuki Sumoto, Sena Miyake and Tatsuya Tsuboi will participate in JGPS. However, the music choices of Sena Miyake and Tatsuya Tsuboi :(

@lauravvv To be fair I also don't like the jazzy Postmodern Jukebox version, I just didn't know anyone had used it. As I said, I think the song is all about the feel of toughness and the pounding beat/baseline. Anything without that sounds weird to me.

I actually really dislike the Post Modern Jukebox versions of songs. I know they're very popular but I can't stand most of them.

Evgenia Medvedeva
SP: Orange Colored Sky, by Natalie Cole
LP: Yo Yo Ma 'Mumuki', Libertango
https://www.instagram.com/p/Blq1rIShI0E/?hl=ru&taken-by=jmedvedevaj

So excited for her SP! (but, the question is, will she be in a sweater vest?! ;) )

A little less excited about the LP music, but it should be a different style program for her, and since she's a good little dancer, maybe it will come off well. (Tango for singles always is kind of a strange choice in my mind)

Tango Warhorse Count:
Cell Block Tango-2
Libertango-2
Oblivion-2
Maria de Buenos Aires-1

I'm currently counting Nazarova & Nikitin's RD as one of the Cell Block Tangos. It was posted in the GS program thread but thus far without a link confirming it. City Lights was listed for their FD, also without a confirmation link.

For me, Piazzolla's music is great, and I can always feel its greatness. It is music like Bach's music.
I think that popular songs may become old as time passes.
To me, these music feels the 50's and 60's.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRp1LZOk05o
Doris Day - It's Magic
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hC-z7eA05y0
Natalie Cole - Orange Colored Sky

Those are not bad music, but I think that people who are listening to the music of the new hit chart may feel old. Why do skater using popular music do not use more new music?
I think that these things are related to the popularity of figure skating in North America and Europe.

Why the season that the Jr and Sr rhythm dance is tango, do the single skaters pick tango too
Many Medvedeva fans wanted to see her do a tango program. Perhaps she found out about that (or some of those fans wrote to her on Instagram) and took their wish into account. It's also possible that she herself wanted to do such a program, and now she is free to do it.

Med's LP is SUCH a David Wilson choice.
When in response to Evgenia's Instagram post about this seasons music someone asked her to "admit" whether she was a part of this choice, she responded with "Having doubts?". I took it to mean that, even if Wilson suggested this particular music, Evgenia had her say as well.

Ichilov & Davidovich
Rhythm Dance--All That Jazz, Cell Block Tango from Chicago.
(I saw it today. I'm lousy at identifying music, but this one I know).

Actually, Piazzolla's 4 Seasons of Buenos Aires and Vivaldi's 4 Seasons are often performed together

Today I got to see Libertango with Sweet Dreams for an intermediate FD at Lake Placid.

And today we had an I Put a Spell on You program with Hit the Road Jack in novices. Oh dear.
