Séguin and Bilodeau end skating partnership

There goes my best hope to keep KMT off the top step. I think I'm going to switch to the US for pairs fandom this year. Best wishes to Julianne and Charlie though. I've thought she was such a wonderful spark of energy in Canadian pairs since first seeing her at Nationals with Drew Evans. It's a shame when she & Charlie were so close to the possibility of a senior national title.

:( It feels like this must have happened rather abruptly. There was that article a couple of weeks ago that said they’d been at a monitoring camp, they’d announced music, were registered to compete etc...Hope it’s not due to her health. I hope Canadian pairs can rebuild from this, but an already small field has been totally depleted in the past few months.

I’ll second @Andora and say

After the last few years where Pairs depth got so much deeper it looks like this post Olympic season is going to take a harder hit then normal. I don't see any younger teams on the horizon like T/M did the previous Olympic cycle that will be medal contenders by the time of Beijing. To many younger teams with huge potential are calling it quits before they even really had a chance to make a name for themselves. :(

YEs ... it does seem fast after seeing training photos ..

??? how you dare even to say this?
What's wrong with it ? I have dreamed of a lot of pair skaters (and ice dancers) paired up differently along the years, just some fantasy and what ifs. This is no insult to nobody. Moore-Towers/Bilodeau would indeed make a great couple, and that from someone who actually loves Moore-Towers/Marinaro, one of my fave pair team last year in Milano.

Interview (in French) with Charlie Bilodeau. He says he decided to end the partnership with Julianne and is still looking to compete. He says that despite the changes for the new season, they were not giving each other what they needed to progress.

When was this announced?? I know it is irrelevant now, but I must’ve missed it. :(
Not sure of the source, sorry, I read it in the 2018/19 Programs thread in here.

Today been such a terrible day for skating news that feeling sad about this split has to take an emotional backseat, because at least no one's freakin' dead, but... god. I really loved this pair. :fragile:

This is going to make it rather difficult for me to wish him well with any future partner(s).

(Feel free to tell me I’m being unreasonable, that skaters should be totally free to chase their own success, etc. etc. I understand those arguments logically, but I don’t emotionally agree. :( )

Many of us commented that Julianne looked different last season; I was one who thought she was being treated with steroids because of the puffiness. If she’s still ill, it’s sad that he recognizes that he has to find another partner, but understandable.

The interview with Charlie made it pretty clear that this was not a mutual decision. Clearly Julianne was well enough to be training and creating two new programs with the full intention of competing this season, so even if she was still recovering or had another health setback recently that we don’t know about, the decision seems rather harsh to me.

Hopefully they find other partners, i never thought they are well matched... perhaps it will work out for them as two different teams.

This is a sad end to a promising partnership. They had flashes of brilliance but things were not going well recently. I wish them both every success in their future endeavours.

This quote is telling:

« J’ai envie d’y retourner, mais pour viser plus haut. Le podium, si c’est possible. Je suis conscient qu’il y a un risque dans le geste que je viens de faire d’arrêter de patiner avec Julianne, mais c’est un risque que je suis prêt à prendre pour justement avoir la possibilité de réaliser d’autres ambitions. »

To paraphrase, and I think my French is good enough that I'm not misunderstanding - he wants to go back to the Olympics but is aiming for the podium. Switching partners is a risk he's willing to take in order to have the possibility of reaching this goal.

Reading between the lines, I’d say he’s hinting she wasn’t working hard enough. Or at least that’s what it sounds like to me.

What a sad day for skating fans. I thought they would have gotten over their issues. His goals are extremely lofty thought a 100% health Julianne would maybe come close to the podium top 5 :)

Maybe she can skate with Dalmans brother.

Another layer of sadness on this heartbreaking day. :( I will miss them a great deal. What an unfortunate end to a promising partnership.

Or couldn't work as hard as he wanted to because of her health issues.
Exactly. He may want to try harder/higher-level elements than would be safe for her.
Or, possibly she's now afraid to try new or riskier elements. Fear of re-injury is not uncommon after a concussion.
