Tammy Gambill moving to C. Springs World Arena

Orange County Register article by Scott Reid: https://www.ocregister.com/2018/05/09/olympic-figure-skating-coach-tammy-gambill-leaving-riverside/
“I want to be in an environment that includes all of the resources that the Olympic Training Center has to offer,” Gambill said. “I really enjoyed working with Christy [Krall] and Tom [Zakrajsek] this past season. I am excited about the energy at the World Arena Ice Hall and being around all of its coaches. After the Olympics, I was really motivated to take on this new challenge.”

USFS has no answer yet to question of whether Vincent Zhou and Karen Chen will remain with Tammy Gambill when she moves coaching base from Cali to Colo. “Details. . .being worked out and there is no announcement about coaching changes at this time,” USFS said.
Zhou's primarily based in Colorado Springs already. Gambill's international students include Yaroslav Paniot (UKR) and Yi Christy Leung (HKG).

I believe Karen posted a photo on Instagram where it looked like she was at the Cricket Club. Is it possible she has moved there? I will be shocked if she stays with Tammy.

I'm surprised in that I hadn't heard any rumors or mumbles about this, but really it's a smart business decision. It's a great training facility right by USFSA headquarters with many talented coaches surrounding you. I know few coaches who wouldn't move there if they were given a chance.

There was something from her on Instagram a couple weeks ago that she and Jason [Brown] were there for Jackson boot fittings.

Yes, and Karen’s IG story today says “New skates”. Jason skated at TCC last summer as well when he was being fitted; it appears Jackson has an understanding with TCC for skaters who come to get fitted.

I really like the idea of these training centers. Coaches collaborating seems like it could really help skaters. But these are not necessarily the coaches I would put together.

Karen AND Bradie have left their coaches??????

According to this article Karen is moving to Colorado with Tammy.

Gambill is no stranger to the Olympics. She guided three skaters to the 2018 Games in South Korea including Karen Chen, the 2017 U.S. champion, and Vincent Zhou, the 2017 World Junior Champion. Chen and Zhou will both join Gambill in relocating to Colorado Springs. Zhou is recent years has split his time in recent seasons between Riverside and Colorado Springs to take advantage of the support system at the OTC.

Can you hold your arsenic? :saint:

 Seemingly, this thread wouldn't be this thread without arsenic flowing like volcanic lava. Courtesy, restraint, sweet tea, manners and old lace are overwhelmed and outdated everywhere these days. :p

I simply wish for Karen, Bradie, Ashley, and Mirai to make decisions that prove to be best for them, their happiness and their personal and career growth.

 I thought I was in the U.S. ladies thread when I posted my previous observation. :p:duh:

I should have said that arsenic often flows like lava on many Internet sites, not just FSU, and not only U.S. ladies thread. :drama: However, arsenic can certainly be as volatile, unpredictable, and overflowing in U.S. ladies thread as the volcanic lava has recently been on the Kilauea island.

Maybe the next U.S. ladies thread can have dibs on that very apt title @Vagabond. :D

The GS article published yesterday has the first direct quote from Karen Chen that I've seen: https://goldenskate.com/2018/05/team-broadmoor-welcomes-tammy-gambill/
“I’m so excited to try out training in Colo., especially since I’ve never trained in altitude before,” said Chen. “I understand it will be very different and new, but having changes and learning to adapt is part of this whole experience. I hope to continue to skate as long as I can while also starting to think about college and other things.”

I don’t see how this provides any sort of progress when it comes to the state of singles skating in the U.S. If anything it will give Gambill’s skaters the benefit of the doubt because they had a good monitoring session(which when TPTB are a short walk away it’s easier to get used to) I feel moving someone like a Rohene who has some sort of familiarity with the ins and out of gaining the points with choreography under IJS would have been the better choice. Between Gambill, Tom Z, and Krall it seems like the World arena will be top heavy on jump “ specialists”.

Jump specialists are well and truly needed though. For components WA is still well served with Drew Meekins, Tom Dickson and Caterina Lindgren. Rohene is just a short drive away in Monument and Christopher Dean works mainly out of the Air Force Academy rink. Both are also welcome in World Arena as guest coaches. Plenty of other choreographers come in and out as needed too.

I’d also add Damon Allen, I think he’s undervalued as both a coach and choreographer. He was behind a lot of work with Josh and Christy Krall even had him teaching skating skills and edges to Patrick Chan at one point.

I wouldn't call Tammy Gambill a jump specialist. She's a very good developmental coach. She specializes in taking young kids and bringing them up to Seniors. She won at least one award for it.

"Making plans for 2022 with these awesome people and coaches. Stay tuned for news about the World Arena International Skating Academy."

Interesting...
I wonder if this is meant to compete with Rafael's idea in LA or if USFSA is trying to build a test center for this model near their HQ before promoting training centers around the country?

I would love to think that it is a prelude to setting up centers around the country.

I do not think it is wise to have one camp controlled by one person be the end all and be all of any sport, no matter how many medals they produce. We’ve seen what that can lead to....

Let there be cooperation, but let no one coach be proclaimed Savior of All and King of the Hill;)

It seems the idea is that CO will be a nat'l training center type of place where skaters/coaches can come for short periods of time, work with the 'experts' and then go back to their own coaches. USFS is funding summer training there for some up-and-coming skaters this summer, I believe. It's possible that eventually, USFS will endorse/support other training centers around the country, who knows. This is likely to address the concern that not enough attention/funding has been given to athlete development.

In a Kori TSL interview, it was said before Kori moving to CO she intended to coach at the World Area but the coaches there thought she was sneaky and they voted against accepting her. Low chance they'd give her a seat at that table.

I admired her carving out an opportunity at Monument after the setback at World Area. What's up with her now?

Don't know about Coco, but maybe because from my perspective she is a fine coach who could bring a different perspective and different gifts than the folks already at the table? And who has shown that she is not afraid to collaborate with others to help improve her skaters.

Although I would agree that given Tom Z.'s propensity, at least from what I have read in print, to hog the spotlight, he might not be the best collaborator. It will be interesting to see how he and Tammy handle Vincent when they are actually in the same rink:lol:
