Duhamel/Radford retire from competitive skating

Meaghan would be good as a technical specialist. As long as she stays away from choreography, or is not in a position to manipulate rules away from the foundations of pairs skating.
I hope that Duhamel becomes a commentator for CBC or CTV. I think she'd be fantastic!

I love that Meagan wants to take the training to become a technical specialist. It's great that she wants to stay involved in skating - she has so much to offer and they are both the very definition of class and sportsmanship.

I wish Meagan and Eric all the best in their post-retirement years.
Or, I think she would make an excellent coach - Julianne & Charlie maybe? Kirsten and Michael???

Could you please give some examples of this?

Because she has always been a gracious and respectful competitor. She has taken her losses in her stride and used them as a motivation to improve. She has never inappropriately blamed anyone else for her losses. And, she has worked hard to be the very best that she can be as a skater, never letting criticisms of her and Eric get to her (and there have been many).

In addition to that, she is a vegan who has great respect for animals and is involved in dog rescue (rescued one from the dog meat trade last year and another one after this Olympics). Maybe 'class' is not the right word for these actions, but I think they certainly merit much respect for Megan.

Nope, you most certainly will never have to worry about anyone calling you classy.:)

She says to this day that Trankov personally attacked her during his commentary. That is an absolutely lie. Even recently with her goofy little comment about V/T in that TSL video.

And Trankov WAS critical of D&R for which apparently THAT is okay because they are what Russian and get free passes on calling D&R's lifts Juniorish?

Sorry but failing to give the whole picture just shows bias. ;)

And just in case you have doubts...

from the horses mouth.

After that I would be critical of Trankov too. ;)

That said... Thank you Duhamel and Radford! Your bronze at Oly's was amazing and Meghan your hug to Aliona was one of the sweetest moments in Pyeongchang.

THIS! Trankov seems to get a free pass on his past judgemental comments yet Duhamel does not?

I will so miss them, not just their skating, but also their focus, determination, dedication, and perseverance - all while being true to themselves.
This finally brings to an end the long skating chain that started with Bruno Marcotte and his 3 skating partners, all the way to Bronze & Gold for Megan & Eric at the Olympic games, with Bruno as their coach.

I have detailed this before, but just find it so cool so will post it once again.
With pairs partner, Isabelle Coulombe, Bruno won the Junior World Pairs Bronze medal in 1993. He later partnered with Nadia Micallef. I have a vid somewhere of this team at the Canadian Championship, circa 1999.

Then he teamed up with his last partner, Valerie Marcoux. My favourite memory of this team is Bruno falling over after launching Valerie in a successfully-landed throw jump. Iirc the pair laughed their way through the rest of the performance and earned warm applause from the audience. (Wish I could find that performance - I think it may have been a Grand Prix in Russia.)

After Bruno's retirement from competitive skating, Valerie paired with Craig Buntin. I really liked this team but they had a hard time gaining international traction.

Then, when Valerie retired, Craig of course teamed up with Megan Duhamel. This team I really loved. They seemed to mesh well from the start and they had true grit. They competed at TEB where Craig's hand got sliced open by Meagan's blade and they had to stop when he was bleeding all over the ice. They went to the bench where Craig was quickly bandaged up and off they went to complete the program. It became evident Craig was still bleeding profusely and by the end Meagan's costume was smeared with blood. The audience showed their appreciation for their determination. Again iirc, Meagan made a statement to the effect that she is bothered by the site of blood and how every time she took his hand she could feel it squish. It was at this time I first heard her say she woke up every morning asking herself what she would do that day to become better, something she reiterated in a profile done this past season. And of course this was our first exposure to the "Meag-analysis" in action. So entertaining.

I was sad when Craig retired but happy that Meagan had found a new partner and would be continuing to compete. I was familiar with Eric from his previous partnership. This team obviously had to work much harder to mesh together but from the first showed determination. Once more iirc, Meagan said one of the biggest adjustments was to being an extra foot higher up in the air on the twist and lifts. And more true grit - first element at first World's appearance and Eric's nose gets broken when it connected with Meagan's elbow on the way day from the twist. They didn't miss a beat - or an element. Many ups and downs for them over the years but ending with a dream Olympics - so well deserved and a fitting 2018 end to a pairs story that began over 25 years ago.

She said he personally attacked them. That was a lie. He did was a COMMENTATOR does: assess the performances and he sure as hell has more credentials to do it than she does. And he was correct in that assessment. She does have very poor lift positions (though they have improved as of late). That's nothing new, and has been such since pre-2013.

Just because someone is a certified commentator doesn’t mean their opinion is more legit than others, Trankov had MANY examples to call out yet he picked D/R because he was owned by D/R at 2016 worlds, he could have easily been called out for his partnerships’ lazy as f#ck program layout through his partnership with Tatiana yet few did that, if D/R weren’t direct competitors would he have done that? it’s the same argument with Caseyeswards, the argument isn’t that both parties threw out jabs, it’s that others threw them out first yet people quickly forget that Trankov was the instigator yet they are quick to remember every detail of what Duhamel said or did not say.

She said he personally attacked them. That was a lie.

You also don't know what was being said behind the scenes....No one but the skaters themselves do, so I don't think calling her a liar is fair either.

Anyway. Congratulations to Meagan and Eric on a fantastic career. The will be missed greatly by many!

Calling lifts juniorish is not "commenting" It is belittling and off putting. It shows complete and utter classless behaviour for an Olympic champion and WRONG. It is ignorant because their lifts were called level 3 and 4's.

So his OPINION just made him look like a joke and the following year... D&R won again and he landed in 7th.

Sweet justice IMHO.

@caseyedwards you need to understand jokes before saying Duhamel said Zagitova was on "drugs".

And the interview with D&R was on point. They heard the targeting by Trankov and coach since 2012 and finally responded in 2015. That actually showed pretty good restraint as far as I am concerned.

This thread made no sense, then I realized I had all these people on ignore already:p

I will really miss Meagan and Eric. They didn't use to be my cup of tea (at least not Meagan's lines, I've always loved Eric) but then they grew on me during the years. I was SO thrilled for them in Korea! Glad they can retire happy, having achieved so much, pushing the sport. Their joy will really be missed. Hope happy camper Meagan sticks around prepping everybody on- and backstage. And go Eric for coming out! And for composing beautiful music. Keep doing that! I skated to "The journey" for my very first competitive program last year<3

Good luck to both Duhamel and Radford in whatever they decide to do next. I wasn't much of their fan till that 2016SP. They also totally won me over when met them in real life. Great guys, great athletes and a great career.

Because it’s a way to say good riddance!!

Is there a way we can tell you to fcuk off? It'd be good riddance to you. This is a place to celebrate their achievements and the conclusion to their successful career, not a place for your idiotic ranting.

I always enjoyed watching them. They were different, and they owned that difference and made it theirs.

My question is who will pick up the post skate commentary like Meghan did? She self critiqued better than commentators. ;)

Any other skater(s) like that?

Or, I think she would make an excellent coach - Julianne & Charlie maybe? Kirsten and Michael???
Julianne and Charlie have a great coach and setup...and she is not shy to send them to outside experts to improve their elements and they train with dancers as well. If Lubov does not continue maybe they could bring her in to lift consult.
As far as Kirsten & Michael....they seem to be Gauthier's favourite team & it would not surprise me if there might have been some prob. there as part of D/R decision to drop Gauthier from their team. There are loads of young kids in Que skating in singles who might think of switching to pairs. I hope Meagan works with them.

Congrats to Meagan and Eric on a successful competitive career! :encore:

I've had the privilege to meet them in person and to attend their training sessions a few times, and they have always been extremely welcoming. They would come up after skating and hang out for a long time when I did not expect them to, talking anything skating, travel, music, Montréal life, etc. Meagan would know everything about all the skaters training at their rink no matter which level, and all the results from current competitions, elements that each team/skater can do, etc. Before the Olympics, we had an intense discussion of all the strategies for the team event, she could definetely give a run for their money to the most informed posters on FSU  She is really the #1 skating fan, and this is what impressed me above all they have done on the ice.
I'm really looking forward to see what both of them are going to do in the skating world. :40beers:

Good luck to Meagan and Eric. All the best in your future endeavors. I've had a lot of fun and pleasure in watching you compete, I hope you did too. :)
