Cirque du Soleil - on Ice

I haven't read this thread, and am not interested enough to do so, but I am :EVILLE: enough to wonder if there have there been any sightings of LC.

I bought my ticket for March 10 (Saturday 4 pm). The ticket was only $65 but Ticketmasters service charges added $23. It was even more expensive on Stubhub. I could have gotten a better seat on Sunday, for about $30 more but I decided to save money because I want to see 'The price is right- live' this month. That ticket was more expensive, but I have never been to a live TV show, so I want to see this one. So saving $30 seemed important.

My seat for crystal is in a very good section, with a side view, though I will be in row 17, which is rather far (would have been row 7 on Sunday). When I went to a Cirque show in Vegas, we were in row 4, side, and it was great. I hope row 17 won't be too bad. I think it may be like a row 17 at a skating competition. Usually that is quite good (not great).

I saw the show last night and was slightly underwhelmed. Part if it may have to do with where I sat. The visibility was poor (I described the whole incident on my Facebook). The starting scene was beautiful, skating was so so, and some of the acrobats were great. I liked the circus acts (minus the required clown) much more than the skating ones. The hockey routine was good though. The trapeze numbers were good too. Didn't care much for the office environment number and it was too long. The pairs did some nice lifts. It was nice to finally see some color in the costumes. The audience seemed to love it. For me, it was just ok, though I appreciated some of the amazing tricks (none of those involved skating).

I go to Cirque for the music more than anything. I have seen 4 shows, a couple of them Tapis Rouge. (One in Montreal, the rest in Toronto)

It is coming to my home city so put feelers out to see if anyone is interested.

I had seen the Beatles Love in Vegas last year and it was fabulous. We had great seats. That's the only Cirque show I had seen before the Crystal one. I think where you sit is very important for these shows, based on my experience.

The theater/tent for Cirque in my city, Vancouver British Columbia, is rather small, and there isn't really a bad seat in the house.

If they have a criminal record in the US, isn’t it highly unlikely they will be barred from entering? At least sawyer. Then his career is done.
I'm going to see it Sunday , weather permitting. Local tour company has a bus going up to Detroit with a lunch stop before (Cracker barrel). I will post a review if the bus is able to make it. They are predicting a snow/ice storm that I hope doesn't happen in Ohio.
I was able to attend the show. Sawyer was in Detroit, and did the 3toe, and a 3toe-3toe combo at the end. It was excellent. It started with comedian, jugglers, it had hockey players, figure skaters, acrobats, they set up ramps that skaters jumped over (not quite barrel jumping but simiar). There were a lot of blackflips.
I would recommend it. The only complaint is that the steps at Little Ceasar's arena in Detroit are really steep. Our seats were excellent and we could see everything.

Thanks for the review @cmk

Are there railings for the stairs at Little Ceasar's?
Yes. The steps are still a lot steeper than at the old joe louis arena or auburn hills though. The usher was very friendly and said he didn't need a gym membership because he got his workout from going up and down those steps all day. The seats are a lot nicer than the old arena (more leg room, wider seats). I think the cup holder was in front of us on the back of the seat in the row ahead instead of on the arm rest. The food is very expensive. I gave my sister in law $5 to get me a coke and didn't get change back. I think the program was $10 but it wasn't as nice as the Disney, 95 ice capades, or champions on ice ones. It was black and white. There weren't a lot of triple jumps. They had a lot of group numbers. It was closer to ice capades (but not as campy as the 95 version, the 2000 version was better but the show I went to was the 2nd (and ended up being the middle show ) of the tour than soi or coi.

I attended the Gliding Stars show in Findlay yesterday ( the local area's special Olympic program). Their theme was going places (new York, Paris, and Hawaii). The music choices were excellent ( new York, new York, Disney songs, beach boys, etc). One of the volunteers sang the national anthem while her sister (a star) signed. More of the kids were skating unassisted (without the walker) this year. Some of them even briefly left the ice (no rotation, just hops). A lot of the Silver Blades skaters are volunteers with the program and I will be attending their show on the 18th. The guest skaters this year are 2017 pairs champions Denny/Frasier, and ice dancers Alexandria Allredge and Danial Easton. Theme is "Chasing Glory" where they are reenacting epic moments in Olympic history. I am on vacation, and will also be going to the musical Pirates of Penzance at the performing arts center on Friday night.

Just got back from the Chrystal show - the 2nd of 3 shows today! Loved it, some fun use of the different types of skating, from solo, to pair, to dance and synchro, as well as some great hockey stuff with some snowboarding flair. The acrobatics and production were also top notch. It looked like Sawyer was in the cast - a 3toe/3toe at the end was a nice highlight for the figure skating fans.
It was also more family-friendly - a LOT more children than at any segment of Nationals. I was trying to figure out who the pairs/couples were.

I enjoyed Crystal. The gilbert and Sullivan Pirates of Penzance was also excellent (not normally into opera but this one is funny). I wonder if any of the ice dance teams will use that music next year.

The guest skaters at the local ice show were Denny/Fraser and Alexandria Allredge/Daniel Eaton. Matt Blackmer also made an appearance (silver blades was his first club) but didn't skate. The theme was Chasing Glory- about great moments from Olympics. Local club skaters performed as the Williams sisters, Dan Jensen, Mario L ( a Canadian rower who saved 2 rival rowers after their boat tipped over, the first lady to win gold in golf (it was in the Olympics a long time ago), dream team, women's soccer team, etc. The tradition of the graduating seniors doing their solos also continued.

Bowling Green skating club is having a free exhibition at 2 pm on April 14th. Its only an hour show so I doubt they have any big names show up. I think Czisny did a show there last year, and its possibly she might be return. There is also supposed to be a group number for former bgsc members as well. They used to have Ice Horizons every 2 years but when the economy went bad, the budget for that disappeared. Findlay's shows tend to to be better organized (they also start practices in January for a show that occurs in March. Bg's recent shows have been mainly local skaters and the shows just seemed to be thrown together quickly. I missed Czisny's show last year and hope it got better.

I am also awaiting the return of skate for hope. I understand they are doing the Florida shows again, but no word on when or if they will return to Bowling Green. Both skate for hope shows I attended for good- the 2nd was better - more skating , less talk , and the pros were excellent. Local skaters also got to perform. The first sfh had Hamilton and Hughes as Mc's. 2nd year- no Hamilton, Hughes was there though. The skating was excellent, and the programs were nice.

I saw it in San Diego and loved it!

Glad we chose it over the US tour of SOI, with no international stars and little creativity...

I am glad I chose Crystal over Disney on Ice (which I also enjoy). It was kind of easy since I have seen princess's before (even if they did rename it and try to pass it off as a new show). I miss when COI was the elgible tour with some pros, and soi was all pros. I also miss the pro circuit- they could have a senior pro tour for the older skaters (and this time let Tonya compete- she can still do doubles), and a revived pro tour for skaters like Rippon,Aaron Wagner, Gold, etc. World Pros and World Challenge need to come back at the minimum.

They also need to revive the pro-ams and fun events like rock and roll and improve. I wish someone would do something like the Disson Shows again, only this time no cutting away from the skater to see the singer. You can hear the singer, no need to see them other than intro and end. The skater's program is more important. If I won the lottery (which is a one in a zillion chance), I would try to revive Ice Capades .

Shawn is definitely still in the cast - he got to meet Kristi Yamaguchi after a show earlier this week.

Thanks to everybody has been sharing reviews!

Shawn Sawyer was interviewed for this Oregon article: http://www.oregonlive.com/art/index.ssf/2018/03/cirque_du_soleils_crystal_turn.html
“I think Cirque has been thinking and talking about it for years, but they didn’t have the right tools to put it all together,” says figure skater Shawn Sawyer. “Since hockey and skating are so big in Canada, they wanted to incorporate as many things as possible in a show, and it took longer to put together. They did it the right way. They just took their time.”
The result is “Crystal,” an arena-sized ice spectacle that opens a seven-performance run on April 4 at Portland’s MODA Center. The show features some of the acrobatic and aerial acts that Cirque is known for, along with sequences involving synchronized ensembles skaters, solo skaters, and what Cirque calls “extreme skating.”

It sounds like the reviews for Crystal this spring are much better than the initial reviews we heard last fall. I wonder if they've tweaked the show to refine & improve it since the original debut.

I saw the show this weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s not a skating show, it’s a Cirque show and I was really impressed at how seamlessly they integrated performers in the air, in shoes, figure skates, and hockey skates into one cohesive show. I was also impressed that they could find musicians, circus performers, etc. that could all skate comfortably. I was very impressed with some of the performers in hockey skates. I’ve never seen anyone skate in hockey skates with that much blade control and precision. Never mind do an Arabian or twizzle in hockey skates. I usually find cirque shows pretty abstract, but this one also had a more accessible storyline which the kids appreciated. I’m really glad we went :)

Saw the show last night and it was totally cool. Listening to some of the music, I really hope someone skates to it.

Shawn Sawyer and Elladj Balde were in it.

Favourite parts were definitely the acrobatics...

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t Elladj. There was another cast member with similar hair that wasn’t him though.

I'm trying to talk some friends into going this week, it's in Orlando. From the ticket map, it looks like the setup only uses one end of the arena. Can someone who has seen it describe the setup? Do we need to sit facing (end of the arena), or is a side view ok?

Side view is totally okay. I think Cirque is really good at making sure that most seats are good seats. You’ll just probably notice different things depending on where you sit though.
